Place rootball on undisturbed soil. 2 3 backfill, 1 3 compost mixture. Staking for evergreen trees 12' and taller: provide 3) Nylon webbing strap collar, heavy duty. Do not twist. Straps should have clearance from the trunk so as not to have girding effect. Space evenly. Provide 2" clearance minimum between the trunk and the strap eyes. Remove three years after installation. Do not cut leader. Prune damaged or dead wood after planting and staking. Keep shape typical of species. Do not prune lower branches. Guy wires: provide 3 equidistant around tree. Keep clear of branches to prevent rub damage. Finish Grade Existing undisturbed subgrade 8. Provide tree stakes as described above. Space evenly. If more than three stakes are required, provide the appropriate number. 9. Drive stakes into undisturbed soil, keeping the tops even. 10. Build a 4" water saucer 6" minimum from the edge of the root ball with compost material. Inside of Saucer shall not cover the root ball. 11. Provide 4" depth of bark nuggets, 2-4" diameter for area within the water saucer. Leave a 4" diameter void around the base of the tree. 4" Water Saucer 6" Min. Leave this area low for planting (see Plan for proposed planting and soil preparation requirements). Compost 2 3 Backfill, 1 3 compost mixture. 1. Measure height of the tree ball (Ht.) 2. Dig a tree pit twice the root diameter (Width), and shallower than its Ht. depending on the size of the root ball (X): 60" diameter root balls and larger should be 6-12" above natural grade; 2-3" caliper trees should be 2-6" above natural grade. 3. Set the root ball on undisturbed soil. 4. Remove twine, burlap, and baskets from top 1 3 of root ball. 5. Fill pit with 2 3 backfill and 1 3 compost. No rocks larger than baseball size are permitted. Foot pack in 6" lifts. 6. Water thoroughly, to the point of saturation, removing all air pockets from backfill material. Utilize a long metal pipe watering wand. Do not fertilize at time of planting. 7. Tree shall be planted vertically and maintained throughout construction. Any site retaining above or below the tree shall be provided as necessary and shall be outside of the drip line of the tree. Boulder retaining shall match the other site retaining. Create a level planting area by retaining on either the downhill side of the tree location or the uphill side (site conditions may require both). Account for planting the tree above grade (see note #3). When laying out the retaining, account for stake locations between it and the root ball (see note #12) 2. Tree shall be planted vertically.
