RE: 328 Mill Creek Cir.
Dear Mary,
Thank you for talking with me today. This letter is a summary of our conversation about the
trees at 328 Mill Creek Circle.
I visited the site today to provide a price to remove two small aspen trees on the west side of
the house. I was also asked to check for tree pests.
I found the dead aspen tree had server willow scale. The cottonwood trees had black sooty
mold on the branches indicating aphid activity. Since the trees have been sprayed this may be
old mold.
As I walked the property I noticed some irregularities in the base of the large spruce in the
planter near the driveway. I tapped the tree with a rubber mallet and received a hollow sound.
Using an increment bore I extracted two cores from the tree. In both cases I found stem or butt
rot. one core yielded 6 approximately 6 inches of sound wood and the other approximately 3.5
inches of sound wood. The tree is 29 inches in diameter.

Tree#3 has a bark included fork at the base. This fork is holding quite a bit of wet, organic material in
the crotch. This condition is a prime environment for the introduction and development of stem rot and
the fork is a weak structural attachment.

In my professional opinion all three of these trees have structural defects that give them a failure rating
probable which means that the defect is serious enough that the tree could fail under normal weather
conditions. The likely targets are the house, driveway, street and neighbors' property.
I understand that all of these are cherished, especially the one in the planter is that is a landscape focal
point. Unfortunately, these trees are structurally compromised and create an elevated risk to property
and physical injury and recommend removing at least trees 1 and 2 to reduce risk to acceptable levels.
Please contact me if you have any questions, or would like a proposal to remove these trees.
Sincerely,
Rick Herwehe
