Members of the Design Review Board and Staff:
We are submitting for changes to the approved plans for the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum.
The previously approved expansion project is being postponed indefinitely due to lack of funding.
Instead, we are proposing to make only minor changes to the exterior. Concurrent with these proposed
changes, the Town of Vail (the Owner)will be removing and replacing the existing exterior wall system
which is badly cracked. In so doing the existing murals will disappear.
In order to facilitate a re-organization of the interior layout, the entrance to the Museum is being moved
into the existing window opening at the west end. We propose to re-use the existing entry doors in that
location. Sheltering the door will be a small gabled timber, etc overhang of approximately 2'-0". Style,
finishes and detailing will closely resemble the overhangs at the Information Center above.
A new red sandstone wainscot and stone cap similar to what exists at the Information Center on the
level above will be applied across the entire facade. At the new entry door location, the veneer will
extend upward to the underside of the new roof as a battered pilaster on each side of the doors.
An exit door is needed at the east end of the facade and this will require removal of one of the existing
windows. The remaining windows will be replaced in their existing openings with lockable outswing
aluminum clad display windows-color and style to match the Information Center. Closed off at the
interior, these will be accessible only from the exterior-again similar to what exists at the Information
Center.
At the belvedere,we are proposing to remove the existing doors and side windows. The openings at the
side windows will be filled in and finished with the stucco finish. At the south end of the belvedere, the
opening for the existing doors will be filled in with stucco wall and another pair of casement display
windows. Doing this will provide the museum with a modest amount of new interior space.
No new exterior lighting is being proposed (none was in the previous approval) as there are street lights
at the plaza.
New signage for the Museum will match the style used at the Information Center and the title
"Snowsports Museum" should fit on the timber cross beam above the entry.
Thank you.
