The primary goal of the project is to provide a usable garage for the family and to provide additional living space. The existing garage is too small and will not accommodate the families vehicles. Other features of the proposed design include: • Conversion of the existing garage to residential floor area and replacement of the garage door with a patio door • Removal and revegetation of the existing driveway including the addition of trees and shrubs to prevent its possible use by vehicles. • The massing of the addition has been designed to recall the existing home’s asymmetrical roof pitches and north facing windows. • The new addition will utilize a stone base of heavily mortared stone to match the stone at the existing entry and garage. • The existing chimney will be re-clad in stone to match the existing stone and this will help to tie materials between the existing and new portions. • The upper portion of the addition will be clad in vertical Shou Sugi Ban siding. Shou Sugi Ban is a several hundred-year-old technique of burning and charring the face of wood siding. The result is a heavily textured blackened face that is rot and fire resistant. Similar to old campfire wood, the siding will continue to patina and acquire a silvery hue on top of the black face. • The siding below the windows will be a horizontal narrow board clear heart redwood siding. • The addition roofing will be asphalt shingles that match existing shingles. • The cantilevered deck will be surfaced with a black metal open bar grating and be framed with black painted steel. • The current angled siding on the north face of the home at the living room windows will be removed and replaced with horizontal siding to match the existing horizontal siding. • The existing home siding, trim and fascia will be repainted a complimentary gray color. The sashes and frames of the existing wood windows will be painted black to match the new windows in the addition. • Many new trees and shrubs will be planted to compensate for trees removed due to construction.
