Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprin- klers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apart- ments, dormitories, and hotels. When enhanced flow characteristics for resi- dential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13 is the major consideration, the Series LFII (TY4234) should be the first choice. When higher flow demands are required for residential sprinklers used in an NFPA 13 design, the large 6.9 K-factor of the Series LFII (TY4234) is an attractive choice. Although mostly intended where residential sprinklers are to be used in an NFPA 13 design, the Series LFII (TY4234) can also be used in wet pipe residential sprin- kler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D, and wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R. The recessed version of the sprinkler is intended for use in areas with fin- ished ceilings. It employs a two-piece Style 30 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mounting surface position. The adjustment pro- vided by the Recessed Escutcheon or Concealed Cover Plate provides a measure of flexibility with regard to which the length of fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. The concealed version utilizes a cover plate assembly that conceals the sprin- kler operating components above the ceiling. The separable two-piece design of the Cover Plate and Support Cup Assemblies allows installation of the sprinklers and pressure testing of the fire protection system prior to the installation of the ceiling or application of a finish coating. Also, the separable “push-on and thread-off” two-piece design of the concealed version provides for 1/2 inch (12,7 mm ) of vertical adjustment. The Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers have been designed with heat sensitivity and water distri- bution characteristics proven to help in the control of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The Series LFII Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) are shipped with a Disposable Protective Cap. The Protective Cap is temporar- ily removed for installation, and it must be replaced to protect the sprinkler while the ceiling is being installed or finished. The tip of the Protective Cap can also be used to mark the center of the ceiling hole into plaster board, ceiling tiles, etc. by gently pushing the ceiling product against the Protec- tive Cap. When ceiling installation is complete, the Protective Cap must be removed and the Cover Plate Assembly installed. The Protective Cap must be removed to ensure proper performance of the sprinklers. NOTICE The Series LFII (TY4234) Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. For the concealed pendent sprinkler, the cover plate which is soldered to the support cup at three places, first falls away when exposed to heat from a fire. The sprinkler then operates similar to pendent and recessed pendent sprin- klers described above. TABLE A WET PIPE SYSTEM SERIES LFII RESIDENTIAL PENDENT AND RECESSED PENDENT SPRINKLERS (TY4234) NFPA 13D, 13R AND 13 HYDRAULIC DESIGN CRITERIA TFP408 Page 5 of 8 Design Criteria UL AND C-UL LISTING CRITERIA The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with the following criteria. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur- er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Ceiling Types Smooth flat horizontal, or beamed, or sloped, in accordance with the 2013 Edition of NFPA 13D, 13R, or 13 as applicable. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) The minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable cov- erage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Tables A and B for NFPA 13D and 13R as a func- tion of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2. over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demand- ing sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers Example No. 1: A corridor being pro- tected is 8 ft. wide; consequently, an actual coverage area of 8 ft. x 20 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4234) Residential Pendent Sprinkler, the flow rate provided in Table A and B for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. cover- age area is 22 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2. the flow rate would be 16 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 22 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Example No. 2: A long narrow room being protected is 12 ft. wide; con- sequently, an actual coverage area of 12 ft. x 20 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4234) Residential Pendent Sprinkler, the flow rate provided in Table A for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area is 22 GPM. However based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2. the flow rate would be 24 GPM. In this case a minimum flow rate of 24 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Obstruction to Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applica- ble for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the TYCO Technical Data Sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity Sprinklers are to be installed with a deflector-to-ceiling distance of 1-1/4 to 4 inches or in the recessed position using only the Style 30 escutcheon as shown in Figure 2. For concealed pendent sprinkler installations, the sprinklers relative to the ceiling mounting surface are to be installed per Figure 6. The concealed pendent sprinkler must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater Max. Coverage Area (a) Ft. x Ft. (m x m) Maximum Spacing Ft. TABLE B WET PIPE SYSTEM SERIES LFII RESIDENTIAL CONCEALED PENDENT SPRINKLERS (TY4234) NFPA 13D, 13R AND 13 HYDRAULIC DESIGN CRITERIA TFP408 Page 6 of 8 Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur- er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic Design The number of design sprinklers is to be the greater of the four most hydrau- lically demanding sprinklers, or 1500 sq. ft. as per FM Data Sheet 2-5. The minimum required discharge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Table C as a function of the maximum allowable coverage area • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2. over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demand- ing sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers than that below. Down drafts through the Support Cup could delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Ref. Tables A and B) being hydrauli- cally calculated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). FM APPROVAL CRITERIA The Series LFII (TY4234) Residen- tial Pendent and Recessed Pendent Sprinklers are FM Approved for installation in accordance with the applicable Factory Mutual Loss Pre- vention Data Sheet FM 2-5. Criteria provided by FM may differ from UL and/or NFPA, therefore the designer should review and become familiar with Factory Mutiual requirements before proceeding with design. The following information pertaining to System Type, Hydraulic Design, and Sprinkler spacing are provided for ref- erence and are not intended to provide complete installation criteria as provide in the applicable Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Data Sheet. Example No. 1: A corridor being pro- tected is 10 ft. wide; consequently, an actual coverage area of 10 ft. x 20 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4234) Residential Pendent Sprinkler, the flow rate provided in Table C for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area is 23 GPM. However, based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2, the flow rate would be 20 GPM. In this case, a minimum flow rate of 23 GPM for this design sprinkler must be utilized. Example No. 2: A long narrow room being protected is 12 ft. wide; con- sequently, an actual coverage area of 12 ft. x 20 ft. is being contemplated. Based on using the LFII (TY4234) Resi- dential Pendent Sprinkler, the flow rate provided in Table C for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area is 23 GPM. However, based on minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2, the flow rate would be 24 GPM. In this case, a minimum flow rate of 24 GPM for this design sprin- kler must be utilized. (In no case shall the design pressure be less than 7 psi.) Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Ref. Table C) being hydraulically calcu- lated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). Max. Coverage Area (a) Ft. x Ft. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, and using the W-Type 7 Wrench shown in Figure 4, install and tighten the Sprin- kler/Support Cup Assembly into the fitting. The W-Type 7 Wrench will accept a 1/2 inch ratchet drive. Step 4C. Replace the Protective Cap by pushing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Pro- tective Cap helps prevent damage to the Deflector and Arms during ceiling installation and/or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. It may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole by gently pushing the ceiling material against the center point of the Cap. As long as the Sprinkler Strap (Fig. 5) or the Protective Cap (Fig. 6) remains in place, the system is considered to be “Out Of Service”. Step 5C. After the ceiling has been completed with the 2-1/2 inch (63 mm) diameter clearance hole and in preparation for installing the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly, remove and discard the Protective Cap and the Sprinkler Strap. Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 regarding instructions for the removal of the Sprinkler Strap. Step 6C. Push the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly into the Support Cup, and as necessary, make the final adjustment of the Cover Plate with respect to the ceiling by turning the Cover Plate/ Retainer Assembly clockwise until its flange just comes in contact with the ceiling. If it becomes necessary to remove the Cover Plate, it can be removed by unscrewing in a counter-clockwise direction. If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged with the Support Cup or the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged suffi- ciently to contact the ceiling, the Sprin- kler Fitting must be repositioned. Series LFII Residential Recessed Pendent Sprinklers The Series LFII Residential Recessed Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with Steps 1R through 4R. Step 1R. Install recessed pendent sprinklers in the pendent position with the deflector parallel to the ceiling. Step 2R. After installing the Style 30 Mounting Plate over the sprinkler threads and with pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand- tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. The recessed sprinkler has been pro- vided with a Sprinkler Strap similar to that shown in Figure 5 for the con- cealed sprinkler assembly. Refer to NFPA 13 for guidance regarding removal of protective straps and caps. As long as the Sprinkler Strap remains in place, the system is considered to be “Out Of Service”. Step 3R. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 4). With reference to Figure 1, apply the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench to the sprinkler wrench flats. Step 4R. After the ceiling has been installed or the finish coat has been applied, slide on the Style 30 Closure over the Series LFII Sprinkler and push the Closure over the Mounting Plate until its flange comes in contact with the ceiling. Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 regarding instructions for the removal of the Sprinkler Strap. Series LFII Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinklers The Series LFII Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with Steps 1C through 6C. Step 1C. Install the sprinkler in the pendent position and with the center- line of the sprinkler perpendicular to the mounting surface. Step 2C. Remove the Protective Cap. Refer to NFPA 13 for guidance regard- ing removal of protective straps and caps Installation The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) must be installed in accordance with this section. General Instructions Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm). A leak-tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a minimum to maximum torque of 10 to 20 ft.-lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). Higher levels of torque may distort the sprin- kler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for insufficient adjustment in an Escutch- eon Plate by under or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers The Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the Steps 1P through 3P. Step 1P. Install pendent sprinklers in the pendent position with the deflector parallel to the ceiling. Step 2P. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand- tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. The sprinkler has been provided with a Sprinkler Strap similar to that shown in Figure 5 for the concealed sprinkler assembly. Refer to NFPA 13 for guid- ance regarding removal of protective straps and caps. As long as the Sprin- kler Strap remains in place, the system is considered to be “Out Of Service”. Step 3P. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 3). With ref- erence to Figure 1, apply the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench to the wrench flats. Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 regarding instructions for the removal of the Sprinkler Strap. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protec- tion system from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this action. Absence of a Cover Plate can delay the sprinkler operation in a fire situation. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feather duster; otherwise, non- operation in the event of a fire or inad- vertent operation may result. When properly installed, there is a nominal 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) air gap between the lip of the Cover Plate and the ceiling, as shown in Figure 6. This air gap is necessary for proper oper- ation of the sprinkler by allowing heat flow from a fire to pass below and above the Cover Plate to help assure appropriate release of the Cover Plate in a fire situation. If the ceiling needs repainting after sprinkler installation, exercise care to ensure that the new paint does not seal off any of the air gap. Failure to do so may impair sprin- kler operation. Factory painted Cover Plates must not be repainted. They should be replaced, if necessary, by factory painted units. Non-factory applied paint may adversely delay or prevent sprinkler operation in the event of a fire. Do not pull the Cover Plate relative to the Retainer. Separation may result. Sprinklers which are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or other- wise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid damage to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprin- klers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprin- kler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installa- tion Section.) The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Contact the install- ing contractor or sprinkler manufac- turer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. Installation The Riser Manifolds may be installed in either the horizontal (flow switch ontop) or vertical (flow going up). The inlet of the Riser Manifold may be di-rectly connected to a shut-off control valve. NOTES(1) Where applicable pipe thread sealant is to be applied sparingly. Useofanon-hardeningpipethreadsealant is recommended. (2) Provisions for an alarm test flowmust be made. The alarm test flow isto be through an orifice having a flowcapacity equal to or smaller than thesmallestorificesprinklerinthesystem. One of two options can be considered. The first option is to temporarily installa test orifice in the outlet of the drain line prior to performing the alarm test. The second option is to install an In-spector’s Test Connection down-stream of the Waterflow Alarm Switch. (3) Never remove any piping compo- nent nor correct or modify any pipingdeficiencies without first depressuriz- ing and draining the system. Step 1.Install the manifold body withthe flow arrow pointing in the down-stream position using threaded con-nections and/or listed mechanicalgrooved connections, as applicable. Step 2.Connect the drain line, and then close the drain valve. Step 3.Refer to Figure 4 for wiringguidance. All wiring must be per-formed in accordance with the Author- ity Having Jurisdiction and/or the Na-tional Electrical Code. Step 4.Place the system in service by filling the system with water. When fill-ing the system, partially open the con- trol valve to slowly fill the system.Fill-ing the system slowly will help avoid damaging the waterflow alarm switch. After the system is fully pressurized, completely open the control valve. Step 5.Secure all supply valvesopen. The tube nut is placed over the end of the copper tube to be joined; the tube end then is flared out at an approximate 45 degree angle by a flaring tool. The flared end is then drawn up by the tube nut so the inside surface is tightly secured against the ball seat of the fitting. This joint can be readily dismantled at any time and is, in effect, a type of union connection. Its use is generally restricted to soft (annealed) copper tubes since hard drawn tubes would be subject to splitting when flared (if the ends were not previously annealed). The flared ends of NIBCO Flared Fittings are produced to the requirements of ASME B16.26, “Cast Copper Alloy Fittings for Flared Copper Tube.” Solder Joint — NIBCO pioneered the development of the solder joint and its application to the field of copper tube piping. Today the solder joint is widely adopted, as evidenced by the majority of cities and states that have written codes to include copper tube and solder joints as desirable for general plumbing, water lines, vent, stack, waste and drain lines, as well as other uses in industry. Testing has shown that often the solder joint has greater strength than the tubes being joined, depending upon the soldering alloy selected. While the method of preparing a solder joint is an exacting art to insure a full strength joint, it can be readily mastered by skilled tradesmen. It is for this reason — to insure the public of the protection afforded by properly prepared joints — that NIBCO products are marketed through the reputable sources of supply to the piping trades. Important procedures for preparing a solder joint are graphically illustrated in this catalog on page 95. Brazed Joint — This type of joint has long been used wherever and whenever critical situations have been encountered in copper piping. The joint itself is completed much in the same manner as the solder joint; however, considerably more heat and several refinements of technique require separate procedures that are described further in this catalog on pages 96-97. Threaded Ends — To adapt copper tube to equipment having National Standard Pipe Taper (NPT) threads or to add copper tube to existing iron pipe installations or other threaded connections, NIBCO provides fittings having both external and internal NPT threads. These threaded ends are produced to the requirements of ASME B1.20.1, “Pipe Threads, General Purpose (Inch).” Flanges — To adapt copper tube to equipment having flanged connections, or to add copper tube to flanged pipe installations or other purposes, NIBCO provides flanges. The flanges are produced in two standard types widely used in this field where copper tube can serve — Class 150, comply with ASME B16.24, “Cast Copper Alloy Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings Class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500”; and Class 125, which conform to MSS SP 106, “Cast Copper Alloy Flanges and Flanged Fittings Class 125, 150 and 300.” Barbed Insert Fittings for Polybutylene (PB) — NIBCO offers a complete line of copper barbed insert fittings for joining PB tube. The insert fittings are produced to the requirements of ASTM F 1380. Along with the insert fittings are copper crimp rings, which, when properly installed, provide a leak-tight mechanical joint. Transition fittings are available for adapting to new or existing threaded or solder joint ends. Barbed Insert Fittings for PEX — NIBCO offers a complete line of copper barbed insert fittings for joining PEX tube. The insert fittings are produced to the requirements of ASTM F 1807. Along with the insert fittings are copper crimp rings, which, when properly installed, provide a leak-tight mechanical joint. Transition fittings are available for adapting to new or existing threaded or solder joint ends. Depth of Solder Penetration drastically affects the breaking load of the joint. When there is too great a soldering clearance, there is no capillary flow to assure complete solder penetration. As shown in the chart below, the holding power of the 3/4-inch joint is directly proportional to the depth of solder penetration. For example: If you get only one-third penetration, you get approximately one-third the strength needed to assure complete satisfaction. It is therefore essential that you install tube and fittings manufactured by companies known to be dedicated to the highest quality control standards. Should you encounter a condition where there is difficulty in filling the joint properly, NIBCO will analyze the trouble without charge. Just send six inches of the tube, along with the fitting and our technicians will provide you with an authoritative report. Solder penetration of one-third the cup depth — breaking load, approximately 2,100 lb. (955 kg) Solder penetration of the entire cup depth — breaking load approximately 7,000 lb. Copper tubes will stand up under ordinary conditions, but the user is specifically cautioned against laying underground tube in cinderfill, especially if the ground is apt to be wet. Due to the sulphur compounds in the cinders, a condition of this kind may corrode the outside of the tubes. This may be overcome either by wrapping the tube with canvas and asphaltum or by surrounding the tube with a bed of clean sand mixed with lime, or with limestone or broken plaster. When conditions are doubtful, it is advisable to consult the Copper Development Association, or the tube manufacturer. Annealed copper tubes are generally recommended for underground use. 1/2" annealed copper tubes have been frozen as many as six times before finally bursting, eight times for 1" size, and eleven times for 2" size. The iron pipe is standard weight, schedule 40, bare pipe, except as to Column I where new galvanized pipe is referred to. COLUMN B: From manufacturers’ specifications. Slight variations can be noted between specifications of different manufacturers, but these figures are representative. COLUMN C: From manufacturers’ specifications with the same considerations as noted for Column B. COLUMN D: From manufacturers’ specifications. COLUMN E: Cubic contents of 10 linear feet/3.05 linear metres of tube and have been calculated from dimeters given in Column B, by the formula for the contents of a cylinder. COLUMN F: This column has been calculated from Column E and shows the number of BTUs (kilojoules) required to heat the water content only of 10 feet (3.05 metres) of the given tube and pipe 100°F (38°C). It requires 833.6 BTUs (879.5 kJ) to heat 1 gallon (3.875 litres) of water 100°F (38°C). COLUMN G: These figures are calculated from Column D and show the number of BTUs (kJ) required to raise the temperature of 10 feet (3.05 metres) of empty tube and pipe 100°F (38°C). Due to difference in the specific heat of the materials, it requires 9.4 BTUs (9.9 kJ) to raise 1 pound (0.454 kilograms) of copper 100°F (38°C) and 11.0 BTUs (11.6 kJ) to raise 1 pound (0.454 kilograms) of iron 100°F (38°C). COLUMN H: This column shows the heat emission from 10 feet (3.05 metres) of the given tube and pipe placed horizontally. The column in terms of BTUs lost per hour (kilojoules lost per hour) for each degree of difference in temperature between the pipe and the surrounding air. The figures for iron are taken from experimental data obtained at the Mellon Institute. Figures for copper have been calculated with reference to those for iron on the basis of the known ratio of heat emission between the two materials. COLUMN I: This column shows the number of gallons (litres) of water which will flow through 100 feet (30.48 metres) of the given tube and pipe with a pressure loss of 10 pounds per square inch (70 kilopascals). Flow is based on diameters in Column B according to Professor Dawson’s formulae for NEW galvanized iron pipe and NEW copper tube. Due to the corrosion of iron and its tendency to accumulate sediments and other foreign matter, Prof. Dawson suggests that 15% be deducted from the figures for iron pipe in order to arrive at a reasonable performance expectancy for such pipe in service. Because copper resists rust and is inherently more smooth, Professor Dawson suggests a deduction of only 5% from the figures given for copper tube. Mains, risers, and branches to radiators should be free or floating at one end of the line. Holes should be large enough to permit free movement of the tube, and care should be exercised so that pipe hangers and supports permit unrestricted movement and do not anchor the tube. Wrought copper tube hangers that are both practicable and neat in appearance are available. Unusually long runs of copper tubing should be provided with an expansion bend or loop. By bending soft temper copper tube, a simple form of expansion loop can be made. With the addition of combination flared-tube to solder joint fittings, as illustrated in Figure 1, these types of loops can be used when space or other limitations exist. The correct proportions of such expansion loop to meet various conditions are shown in the accompanying table. FIGURE 1 EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION U.S. customary units in this document are the standard; the metric units are provided for reference only. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents. The above chart is calculated using 10ft (3.05m) of copper tubing as the reference point. You may use it as follows: 100ft (30.5m) of copper tube, with a 200°F (93.3°C) temperature change. Reference point .2256 inches for 10ft, (5.73mm for 3.05m), multipy by 10 for 100ft (30.5m), resulting in an answer of 2.256 inches (57.3mm) of expansion or contraction. NOTE: Calculations for expansion and contraction should be based on the average coefficient of expansion of copper which is 0.0000094 per °F (0.00001692 per °C) between 77°F and 212°F (25°C and 100°C). For example, the expansion for each 10ft (3.05m) of any size of tube heated from room temperature of 70°F (21.1°C) to 170°F (76.7°C), that is, 100°F (55.6°C) rise, is: Rise Coefficient 100°F 10ft 12 inches 0.000094 0.1128 in.xx x =(55.6°C) (3.05m) (1000mm) (0.00001692) (2.87mm) a. With the use of copper tube, no allowance is necessary for the accumulation of rust deposits in supply and service lines. Consequently, copper tube lines are usually figured one size smaller than iron pipe for the same service. This rule does not apply to lines from a well to a pump where the nominal diameters specified by the pump manufacturer must be adhered to strictly. Water passing through any pipe line encounters resistance by friction. The resistance is increased by bends and turns in the line, which should be taken into account in complex piping systems. For example, a one-inch 90° elbow will cause friction loss equivalent to that of one foot (0.305m) of straight one-inch tube. (See below for allowance to be made for fittings and valves in equivalent lengths of tube.) Friction loss in terms of head loss must be taken into consideration in calculating tube sizes to be used for various types of installations. For most average-size-house installations with water pressures 40 PSI (275.8kPa) and higher, 3/4" copper tube will be ample for main supply lines, and 1/2" copper tube can be used for risers and branches to all fixtures. The smaller 3/8" tube is adequate to supply branches, but with pressures at 40 PSI (275.8kPa) and higher, water hammer becomes a concern when the flow is suddenly stopped. Cut tube end square, ream, burr and size. When adjoining surfaces of copper and copper alloys meet under proper conditions of cleanliness and temperature, solder will make a perfect adhesion. The strength of joint is equal to or even greater than the strength of tube alone. Surface tension seals the joint. Capillary attraction draws solder into, around, and all about the joint. It’s easy to learn to make a perfect solder joint when you use NIBCO Fittings. WITH 95-5 SOLDER AND INTERMEDIATELY CORROSIVE FLUX 6. Remove excess solder with a small brush or wiping cloth while the solder is plastic. 2. Use sand cloth or steel wire brush to clean tube and cup to a bright metal finish. 3. Apply solder flux to outside of tube and inside of cup of fitting carefully so that surfaces to be joined are completely covered.Use flux sparingly. 4. Apply flame to the fitting to heat tube and solder cup of fitting until solder melts when placed at joint of tube and fitting. 5. Remove flame and feed solder into the joint at one or two points until a ring of solder appears at the end of the fitting. The correct amount of solder is approximately equal to 11/2 the diameter of the fitting… 3/4" (20mm) solder for 1/2" fitting, etc. 4 For the most up to date information, visit www.sammysuperscrew.com Wood Flooring Wood Joist Double Sheetrock Ceiling Approvals Rod Size Part Number Model Screw Descriptions Ultimate Pullout (lbs) UL Test Load (lbs) FM Test Load (lbs) Box Qty Case Qty 1/4" 8002957 GST 100 1/4 x 1" 210 (7/16” OSB)670 (3/4” Ply)25 125 1/4" 8003957 GST 200 1/4 x 2" 1760 (Fir)25 125 1/4" 8004957 GST 300 1/4 x 3" 2060 (Fir)25 125 3/8" 8006957 GST .75 1/4 x 3/4" 564 (3/4" Ply)25 125 3/8" 8007957 GST 10 1/4 x 1" 210 (7/16” OSB) 670 (3/4” Ply)300 25 125 3/8" 8008957 GST 20 1/4 x 2" 1760 (Fir)850 1475 25 125 3/8" 8068925 GST 20-SS 1/4 x 2" 1760 (Fir)850 25 125 3/8" 8009925 GST 25-380 3/8 x 2-1/2" 2113 (Fir)1500 25 125 3/8" 8010957 GST 30 1/4 x 3" 2060 (Fir)1500 1475 25 125 3/8" 8069925 GST 30-SS 1/4 x 3" 2060 (Fir)25 125 3/8" 8011925 GST 40 1/4 x 4" 2180 (Fir)25 125 3/8" 8012925 GST 60 1/4 x 6" 2230 (Fir)25 125 1/2" 8013925 GST 2 1/4 x 2" 1760 (Fir)25 125 1/2" 8014925 GST 2.5-380 3/8 x 2-1/2" 2113 (Fir)25 125 1/2" 8015925 GST 3 1/4 x 3" 2275 (Fir)25 125 1/2" 8016925 GST 4 1/4 x 4" 2180 (Fir)25 125 1/2" 8017925 GST 6 1/4 x 6" 2230 (Fir)25 125 Not less than 2” nominal width (1-1/2”) Not less than 3” nominal thickness (2-1/2”) (depth or side of vertical member) VERTICAL MOUNT WOOD WOOD WOOD WOOD WOODSAMMYS® for Wood Installs VERTICALLY into the bottom of wood structures easily and quickly! #14 Black Nut Driver Part # 8113910 SPECIAL NUT DRIVER SYSTEM: The nut drivers were designed with a unique spin-off feature which provides a fast and safe installation each time.
