Also, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific fitting used. *Corrosion Resistance Ratio per latest UL Directory Listing 5 Grinnell Grooved Fire Protection Products Grooved Fittings Technical Services: Tel: (800) 381-9312 / Fax: (800) 791-5500 www.tyco-fire.com September 2004 TFP1810Page 1 of 6 The grooved fittings provide an economical and efficient method of changing direction, adding an outlet, reducing, or capping grooved piping systems. General Description The Series TY-FRB, 2.8, 4.2, 5.6, and 8.0 K-factor, Upright and Pendent Sprinklers described in this data sheet are quick response - standard cover- age, decorative 3 mm glass bulb type spray sprinklers designed for use in light or ordinary hazard, commercial occupancies such as banks, hotels, shopping malls, etc. The recessed version of the Series TY-FRB Pendent Sprinkler, where ap- plicable, is intended for use in areas with a finished ceiling. It uses either a two-piece Style 10 (1/2 inch NPT) or Style 40 (3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Es- cutcheon with 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 3/4 inch (19,1 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pendent position, or a two-piece Style 20 (1/2inchNPT)orStyle30(3/4 inch NPT) Recessed Escutcheon with 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust- ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush pen- dent position. The adjustment pro- vided by the Recessed Escutcheon re- duces the accuracy to which the fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. Corrosion resistant coatings, where applicable, are utilized to extend the life of copper alloy sprinklers beyond that which would otherwise be ob- tained when exposed to corrosive at- mospheres. Although corrosion resis- tant coatedsprinklers havepassed the standard corrosion tests of the appli- cable approval agencies, the testing is not representative of all possible cor- rosive atmospheres. Consequently, it is recommended that the end user be consulted with respect to the suitability of these coatings for any given corro- sive environment. The effects of ambi- ent temperature, concentration of chemicals, and gas/chemical velocity, should be considered, as a minimum, along with the corrosive nature of the chemical to which the sprinklers will be exposed. An intermediate level versions of the Series TY-FRB Pendent Sprinklers are detailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP356, and Sprinkler Guards are de- tailed in Technical Data Sheet TFP780 WARNINGS The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers de- scribed herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authorities hav- ing jurisdiction.Failure to do so may impair the performance of these de- vices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C to 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) for the 286°F/141°C temperature ratings. A leak tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). A maxi- mum of 21 ft. lbs. (28,5 Nm) of torque may be used to install sprinklers with 1/2 NPT connections. A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be ob- tained with a torque of 10 to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maximum of 30 ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torque is to be used to install sprinklers with 3/4 NPT con- nections. Higher levels of torque may distort the sprinkler inlet and cause leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to make-up for insuffi- cient adjustment in the escutcheon plate by under- or over-tightening the sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. The Series TY-FRB Pendent and Up- right Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instruc- tions. Care and Maintenance The Series TY-FRB Sprinklers must be maintained and serviced in accord- ance with the following instructions: NOTES Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that itcontrols, permissiontoshutdownthe affectedfireprotectionsystemmustbe obtained from the proper authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging of any objects; otherwise, non-operation in theevent ofa fire or inadvertentopera- tion may result. Absence of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated or otherwise altered after leaving the factory. Modi- fied sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam- age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam- aged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be re- placed. Also, replace any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installation Section). Figure 1) in the Inlet of the Sprinkler. The glass Bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated tem-perature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb, and the Bulb Seat is released. The compressed Spring is then able to ex-pand and push the Water Tube as well as the Guide Tube outward. This ac-tion simultaneously pulls inward on the Yoke, withdrawing the Plug & Belleville Seal from the Inlet allowing the sprin-kler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The Tyco® Series DS-1 Sprinklers are intended for use in fire sprinkler sys-tems designed in accordance with the standard installation rules recognized by the applicable Listing or Approval agency (e.g., UL Listing is based on NFPA 13 requirements). The 1 inch NPT Series DS-1 Sprin-klers are to be installed in the 1 inch NPT outlet or run of malleable or duc-tile iron threaded tee fittings that meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class 150) or cast iron threaded tee fittings that meet the dimension-al requirements of ANSI B16.4 (Class 125). The Series DS-1 Sprinklers may also be installed in the 1 inch NPT out-let of a Grinnell Figure 730 Mechani-cal Tee; however, the use of the Figure 730 for this arrangement is limited to wet pipe systems. Typically, the end sprinkler fitting on a branch line is plugged as shown in Figures 3 through 11. The DS-1 Sprin-klers cannot be installed into an elbow fitting. For wet pipe systems, the sprinkler drop may be installed as shown in Fig-ure 12. The configuration in Figure 12 may only be used where the sprinkler fitting and water filled pipe above the sprinkler fitting is not subject to freez-ing and where the length of the DS-1 Sprinkler has the minimum exposure length per Figure 14. For wet pipe systems, the DS-1 Sprin-klers may also be installed in the fol-lowing Tyco® CPVC fittings: (P/N 80145) 1” x 1” NPT Female Adapter or (P/N 80249) 1” x 1” x 1” NPT Sprinkler Head Adapter Tee. Otherwise, use the configuration shown in Figure 13 to assure complete drainage of water from above the DS-1 Sprinklers and the branch line. NOTEDo not install the Series DS-1 into any other type fitting without first consult-ing the Technical Services Depart-ment. Failure to use the appropriate fitting may result in: failure of the sprin-kler to properly operate due to forma-tion of ice over the inlet Plug or bind-ing of the inlet Plug; or, insufficient engagement of the inlet pipe threads with consequent leakage. Branch, cross, and feedmain piping connected to Dry Sprinklers and sub-ject to freezing temperatures must be pitched for drainage in accordance with the minimum requirements of the National Fire Protection Association for dry pipe sprinkler systems. When Dry Sprinklers are to be used in wet pipe sprinkler systems protect-ing areas subject to freezing tempera-tures (e.g., sprinkler drops into freez-ers), consideration must be given to the appropriate length of the sprinkler that will prevent freezing of the water in the connecting pipes due to conduc-tion. When the temperature surround-ing the wet pipe sprinkler system is maintained at a minimum temperature of 40°F/4°C, the following are the mini-mum recommended lengths between the face of the sprinkler fitting and the outside surface of the protected area (i.e., length exposed to minimum am-bient of 40°F/4°C – Ref. Figure 14): • 12 inches (300 mm) when the tem-perature within the protected area is -20°F/-29°C • 18 inches (450 mm) when the tem-perature within the protected area is -40°F/-40°C • 24 inches (600 mm) when the tem-perature within the protected area is -60°F/-51°C For protected area temperatures between those given above, the mini-mum recommended length from the face of the fitting to the outside of the protected area may be determined by interpolating between the indicated values. The 2007 edition of NFPA 13, Sec-tion 8.4.10.2 requires that dry sprin-klers connected to wet pipe sprinkler systems protecting insulated freezer structures have the clearance space around the sprinkler barrel be sealed. The use of the Model DSB-2 Dry Sprinkler Boot described in Technical Data Sheet TFP591, and illustrated in Figures 15 and 16, will meet the intent of NFPA 13. Refer to the Design Criteria section for other important requirements regard-ing piping design and sealing of the clearance space around the Sprinkler Casing. Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprinkler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm) for the 135°F/57°C rating to 1/8 inch (3,2 mm) for the 286°F/141°C rating. A 1 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained with a minimum to maximum torque of 20 to 30 ft. lbs. (26,8 to 40,2 Nm). Higher levels of torque may dis-tort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in-sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under-or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Readjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Step 1. Pendent sprinklers must be installed only in the pendent posi-tion, and upright sprinklers must be in-stalled only in the upright position. The deflector of a pendent or upright sprin-kler is to be parallel to the ceiling. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be installed in the horizontal position with their centerline of waterway perpen-dicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP” on the De-flector is to face towards the ceiling. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the inlet threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Wrench tighten the sprinkler by wrenching on the Casing with a pipe wrench whenever the casing is readily accessible. Otherwise, use a W-Type 7 Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Figure 2). The wrench recess of the W-Type 7 is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats (Ref. Figure 2). Step 4. After the ceiling/wall has been installed/finished, slide on the outer piece of the Escutcheon until it comes in contact with the ceiling/wall. Do not lift the ceiling panel out of its normal position. In the case of the outer piece of the Deep Escutcheon, hold the outer piece in contact with the mounting sur-face (ceiling), and then rotate the in-ner piece approximately 1/4 turn with respect to the outer piece, to hold the Deep Escutcheon firmly together. Care and Maintenance The Tyco® Series DS-1 Dry Type Sprin-klers must be maintained and ser-viced in accordance with the following instructions: NOTES Absence of the outer piece of an es-cutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, may delay the time to sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Before closing a fire protection sys-tem main control valve for mainte-nance work on the fire protection sys-tem that it controls, permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys-tems must be obtained from the prop-er authorities and all personnel who may be affected by this action must be notified. A Vent Hole is provided in the Bulb Seat (Ref. Figure 1) to indicate if the Dry Sprinkler is remaining dry. Evidence of leakage from the Vent Hole is an indi-cation that there may be weepage past the Inlet seal and that the sprinkler needs to be removed for determining the cause of leakage (e.g. an improp-er installation or an ice plug). The fire protection system control valve must be closed and the system drained be-fore removing the sprinkler. Sprinklers that are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or other-wise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be com-pletely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age -before, during, and after instal-lation. Sprinklers damaged by drop-ping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, re-place any sprinkler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb (Ref. Installation Section). The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devic-es in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable stan-dards of the National Fire Protection Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authori-ties having jurisdiction. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted relative to any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems should be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accor-dance with local requirements and/or national codes. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. Contact the installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer with any questions. Due to the flow regulating characteris-tic of this device, its impact on system hydraulics should be carefully consid-ered, especially when retrofitted into existing systems. WARNING Adjustment of the Needle Valve is factory set and must not be altered. General Description The TYCO Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valves, 2 through 8 Inch (DN50 through DN200), are factory-assembled and fully trimmed valve arrangements for pressure control. They are used on water filled pipe where it is necessary to reduce a higher inlet pressure to a lower delivery pressure under static and/or residual flowing conditions. The Model PRV-1 Valve is intended to automatically main-tain the outlet “set pressure” (static and residual) within a close range, regard-less of fluctuations in the higher pres-sure inlet line or varying flow rates. The Model PRV-1 Valve is provided with a factory outlet “set pressure” of 125 psi (8,6 bar); however, it may be field set to a nominal outlet “set pressure” of 80 to 225 psi (5,5 to 15,5 bar) per its FM Approval or 80 to 150 psi (5,5 to 10,3 bar) per its UL Listing. TFP1580Page 2 of 16 Technical Data ApprovalsUL and C-UL ListedFM Approved The UL Listing is based on: • Installation requirements referenced in the Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13, or the Standard for Installation of Standpipe and Hose Valves, NFPA 14, as applicable. • Inspection, testing, and mainte-nance requirements referenced in the Standard for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, NFPA 25. • Filed-setting of the Model PRV-1 Valve to provide required outlet pressures and flows for the given application. • Testing of the Model PRV-1 Valve after installation in accordance with NFPA 13 and/or NFPA 14 as applicable. • Testing the Model PRV-1 Valve tested periodically thereafter in accordance with NFPA 25. Diaphragm Cover Fasteners are galvanized carbon steel. • The Pilot Valve is brass and stain-less steel with nylon fabric-rein-forced, natural rubber per ASTM D 2000 diaphragm. • The Strainer is brass and stainless steel. • Pressure Gauges have a 2-1/2 inch (65 mm) diameter, stainless steel case, and 0 to 350 psi (25 bar) pres-sure rating. • Tube, Fittings, and Needle Valve are copper, brass, and stainless steel. Operation With reference to Figure 4, the system water supply pressure from the inlet cavity of the Model PRV-1 Valve enters the Diaphragm Chamber through a Strainer and Needle Valve. The factory set Needle Valve provides the required orifice size for the supply line to the Diaphragm Chamber to optimize performance. Exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamber through the Pilot Valve is controlled by a regulating spring that is factory set, and subsequently field adjustable, to the desired downstream “set pressure” that is to be maintained. A sensing line connects the outlet of the Pilot Valve to the system piping downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve via the Pressure Sensor Insert in the outlet cavity. When the downstream pressure rises above the “set pressure” of the spring, exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamber through the Pilot Valve to the Model PRV-1 Valve outlet cavity is stopped and pressure increases in the Diaphragm Chamber. When down-stream pressure falls below the “set pressure” of the spring, exit flow from the Diaphragm Chamber through the Pilot Valve to the Model PRV-1 Valve outlet cavity resumes and pressure in the Diaphragm Chamber decreases. The regulated flow through the Pilot Valve decreases and increases the pressure in the diaphragm chamber to sufficiently open and close the Model PRV-1 Valve, as required, to regulate the downstream “set pressure”. The operation sequence is as follows: • When there is no flow demand down-stream of the Model PRV-1 Valve, the Seat is closed and the Pilot Valve Seat is closed. With the Pilot Valve Seat closed, pressure is trapped in the Diaphragm Chamber to seat the Diaphragm and the Model PRV-1 Valve remains closed. As the Pilot Valve Seat closes to reduce the opening, pressure is trapped in the Diaphragm Chamber at a point that allows the Diaphragm to remain lifted from the Model PRV-1 Valve Seat to retain the downstream “set pressure”. • Should the downstream pressure start to fall below the “set pres-sure”, the Pilot Valve Seat re-opens to allow for a decrease in pressure in the Diaphragm Chamber to allow the Model PRV-1 Valve to open fur-ther and then once again establish the downstream “set pressure”. • When the downstream pressure is at or above the “set pressure” and assuming there is a flow demand downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve, the Pilot Valve Seat is closed to trap a sufficient pressure in the Diaphragm Chamber to allow the Model PRV-1 Valve to remain open to provide the “set pressure”. Design Considerations The following items must be consid-ered and applied accordingly for an installation that will be using the Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve: • The Model PRV-1 Valve may be installed vertically or horizontally and in any orientation without affecting its operating efficiency. When planning the positioning of the Model PRV-1 Valve, it is recommended that con-sideration be given to the viewing of the pressure gauges. Consideration should also be given to positioning the Model PRV-1 Valve so that the diaphragm cover is facing up. With the cover facing up, internal access is more easily achieved. • The Model PRV-1 Valve must be in an area that is easily accessible for maintenance purposes, not subject to freezing temperatures, and not subject to physical damage. • The valve is designed for fresh water service. When corrosive atmo-spheres and/or contaminated water supplies are present, it is the owner’s responsibility to verify compatibility with the pressure reducing valve, pilot valve, and trim. • The difference between the water supply pressure and the desired outlet (downstream) pressure must be 25 psi (1,7 bar) or greater per its FM Approval or 50 psi (3,4 bar) or greater per its UL Listing. The differ-ential maintains accuracy control of the discharging pressure over the full rated flowing range. • Cavitation may occur when the inlet pressure is greater than twice the “set pressure”. For this case, the pressure should be reduced in two steps by using two Model PRV-1 Valves in series. • When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, a 1/2 inch (DN15) or larger relief valve shall be located downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve. The relief valve shall be set at a pressure equal to the lowest pres-sure rated component downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve. Note: FM Approval is based on the use of the 1/2 inch Watts Regulator, Series 530C Pressure Relief Valve. • When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, a listed indicating valve shall be provided on the inlet side of the Model PRV-1 Valve. • When reducing pressure for a sprin-kler system, means shall be provided downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve to facilitate a flow test at the sprinkler system demand. Installation The TYCO Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve must be installed with the flow arrow located on the Diaphragm Cover pointing in the intended direction of flow. Installation dimensions are provided in Figures 5 and 6. Before the Model PRV-1 Valve is installed, pipe lines should be flushed of all chips, scale and foreign matter. Care must be exercised to assure that the trim is not damaged during installation. NOTICE Do not lift the valve by its trim. Otherwise, the trim may be damaged and impair system operation. The inlet and outlet connections must be made based on the direction of flow arrow provided on the Diaphragm Cover. The valve cannot operate if connected backwards. Do not alter the trim. Altering the trim may render the valve ineffective and impair the system operation. Placing the Valve in Service Perform the following 13 Steps when placing the TYCO Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve in service. WARNING Downstream pressure adjustment is only to be performed by experienced personnel who understand the impact of adjusting the downstream pressure and who take full responsibility of the readjustment from the factory setting. The Pilot Valve is provided with a Tamper Cap, which upon removal will allow for field adjustment by using the Adjusting Screw. Adjustment of the Needle Valve is factory set and must not be altered. Per the requirements of NFPA 13, a means shall be provided downstream of the Model PRV-1 Valve to simulate the sprinkler system demand. In the case of hose stations, the opening of a hose valve or multiple hose valves, as required, will be necessary to simulate hose stream demand. For the purposes of the following instruction, the opening of a “flow test valve” simulates either the sprinkler demand or hose stream demand, as applicable. The sprinkler demand or hose stream demand must be at least 50 GPM (190 LPM) for 2 to 6 inch (DN50 to DN150) valves and at least 100 GPM (380 LPM) for 8 inch (DN200) valves. There is no need to vent any trapped air from the Diaphragm Chamber. Filling the System Step 1. Install gauges at the Pilot Valve and inlet Sensing Line. Apply thread-sealant to the male end of the threads. Ensure the pips on the pressure gauges are in the upright position. Step 2. Verify that downstream drain valves are closed and that there are no leaks. Step 3. Partially open a valve or valves at the end of the system (such as, an inspector’s test connection on a wet pipe system) to allow trapped air to escape when filling the system. Step 4. Slowly and partially open the water supply control valve feeding the Model PRV-1 Valve. Step 5. After the system fills with water, close the valve or valves that had been partially opened in Step 2. Step 6. Completely open the main water supply control valve feeding the Model PRV-1 Valve. TFP1580Page 7 of 16 Adjusting Downstream Pressure NOTICE After any downstream pressure adjust-ment, the following items are to be recorded on a tag attached to the valve: • Valve installation location • Inlet static pressure • Outlet static pressure • Inlet residual pressure • Outlet residual pressure • Intended outlet flow The tag is not to be removed until after the system has been accepted by the authority having jurisdiction. It is rec-ommended that the tag not be removed even after acceptance by the author-ity having jurisdiction unless another means of record keeping is maintained. Step 1. Remove the Tamper Cap from the Pilot Valve by first loosening its set screw and then unscrewing the Tamper Cap. Step 2. Open the “flow test valve” to simulate either the desired sprinkler demand or hose stream demand. Step 3. If surging flow occurs, attempt to bleed trapped air from the system via the inspector’s test valve and any other valve that can vent trapped air. Step 4. Loosen the locknut on the adjusting screw of the Pilot Valve. Step 5. Turn the adjusting screw clock-wise to increase outlet pressure or counterclockwise to decrease outlet pressure. Step 6. After achieving the desired per-formance, tighten the locknut on the adjusting screw. Step 7. Close the “flow test valve”. Observe the outlet pressure gauge and compare to the required “set pressure”. If the required “set pressure” is not achieved, repeat Step 8 and proceed accordingly. Replace the Tamper Cap and tighten its set screw. The pressure reducing valve is now set for service. Due to the spring tolerance within the Pilot Valve, it may be necessary to alternate back and forth between resid-ual and static conditions to achieve the desired “set pressure” for both residual and static conditions. Care and Maintenance The TYCO Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve must be maintained and serviced in accordance with this section. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection system from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this action. NOTICE Inspection, testing, and maintenance must be performed in accordance with the requirements of the NFPA, and any impairment must be immediately corrected. Responsibility lies with sprinkler owners for the inspection, testing, and mainte-nance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the appli-cable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (for example, NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having juris-diction. Contact the installing contrac-tor or product manufacturer with any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are recom-mended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national code. The Model PRV-1 Pressure Reducing Valve requires no lubrication, packing or preventative maintenance; however, replacement of the diaphragm every five years is recommended. Flow TestsFlow tests per NFPA are required every five years, at which point the outlet pressure is compared to previous tests. If necessary the Model PRV-1 Valve can be readjusted following the Placing the Valve in Service section. If the desired pressure cannot be achieved, the Diaphragm and/or Pilot Valve should be replaced. Diaphragm ReplacementPrior to replacing the Diaphragm, the Model PRV-1 Valve must be taken out of service and completely drained. With reference to Figure 3, the Diaphragm Tab is oriented perpendicular to the outlet flow. When reinstalling the Diaphragm Cover, the Diaphragm Cover Fasteners must be uniformly and securely tightened using a cross-draw sequence. After tightening, double check to make certain that all of the Diaphragm Cover fasteners are securely tightened. Pilot Valve ReplacementPrior to removing the Pilot Valve, the Model PRV-1 Valve must be taken out of service and completely drained. When installing the replacement Pilot Valve, the trim components must be replaced exactly as they were. After reinstalling the Pilot Valve and before returning the Model PRV-1 Valve into service, completely unscrew the Adjusting Screw of the replacement Pilot Valve so as to obtain a minimum outlet “set pressure”. Then proceed to use the instructions under Placing The Valve In Service section to place the Model PRV-1 Valve in service. NOTICE The Pilot Valve is not field repairable. Attempting to repair the Pilot Valve may render the valve ineffective and impair the system operation. Completely unscrewing the Adjusting Screw of the replacement Pilot Valve will help to avoid an accidental over pressurization of the system piping prior to achieving the desired “set pressure”. Figure 1) are indicat-ing type valves designed for use in fire protection systems where a visual in-dication is required as to whether the valve is open or closed. They are used, for example, as system, sectional, and pump water control valves. They have cut groove inlet and outlet connections that are suitable for use with grooved end pipe couplings that are listed and approved for fire protection systems. For applications requiring supervision of the open position of the valve, the Gear Operators for the Model BFV-N Butterfly Valves are provided with two sets of factory installed internal switches each having SPDT contacts. The supervisory switches transfer their electrical contacts when there is move-ment from the valve’s normal open po-sition during the first two revolutions of the handwheel. WARNINGSThe Model BFV-N Grooved End But-terfly Valves described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any other authori-ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain-ing their fire protection system and de-vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. The variety of sizes and grooved end connections allow cost effective and easy transition tocheck valves, control valves, and system piping. The Riser Manifoldsmaybeinstalledineitherthe horizontal (flow switch on top) or verti- cal (flow going up) for both single sprinkler rises and floor control in high rises. WARNING The Riser Manifolds described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation, in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdic- tion.Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. Technical Data Approvals The Figure 513 (13) Riser Manifolds with a cover tamper switch for the wa- terflow alarm switch are UL Listed, ULC Listed, and FM Approved. The Figure 513 (13) Riser Manifolds without a cover tamper switch for the waterflow alarm switch are UL Listed and FM Approved. Maximum Working Pressure 175 psi (12,1 bar) Test Orifice 5.6K (80K) Assembly The manifold body of the Figure 513 is ductile iron, whereas the manifold body of the Figure 13 is cast iron. The two assemblies are completely inter- changeable in function, application, and end-to-end laying length. Finish Red painted. Installation The Riser Manifolds may be installed in either the horizontal (flow switch on top) or vertical (flow going up). The inlet of the Riser Manifold may be di- rectly connected to a shut-off control valve. NOTES Where applicable pipe thread sealant is to be applied sparingly. Use of a non-hardening pipe thread sealant is recommended. Never remove any piping component nor correct or modify any piping defi- ciencies without first depressurizing and draining the system. Step 1.Install the manifold body with the flow arrow pointing in the down- stream position using threaded con- nections and/or listed mechanical grooved connections, as applicable Step 2.Connect the drain line, and then close the drain valve. Step 3.Refer to Figure 3 for wiring guidance. All wiring must be per- formed in accordance with the Author- ity Having Jurisdiction and/or the Na- tional Electrical Code. Step 4.Refer to Figure 4 for optional relief valve. Step 5.Place the system in service by filling the system with water. When fill- ing the system, partially open the con- trol valve to slowly fill the system.Fill- ing the system slowly will help avoid damaging the waterflow alarm switch. After the system is fully pressurized, completely open the control valve. Step 6.Secure all supply valves open. When properly installed, the internal ball rests in the lower most area of the valve body allowing for proper drainage of moisture accumulation. Upon system pressurization, the internal ball is “pushed” into the small end of the ball drip body closing the opening. When system pressure is removed, the ball returns to its original position. One of the most common uses is on the dry side of the Fire Department Connection valve. This use helps keep moisture from accumulating inside the Fire Department Connection. Designed for horizontal installation only. Installation Proper installation of the brass ball drip can be accom- plished with standard piping installation tools. Make sure the threads are clean and free from burs and debris. Apply a thread sealant suitable for the materials being joined such as PipeFit, PipeFit AS or PTFE tape. When using a paste type sealant, make sure to brush the sealant deep into the root of the threads. Thread the ball drip into female threads hand tight. Finish tightening with a pipe wrench up to one full turn. Do not over tighten. Over tightening may dam- age threads and ball drip. Finish piping to allow for proper drainage. Valve opens by force of gravity only. Do not use with more than 1 ft. column of water (water pressure) on the ball check. Use only in the horizontal position.
