The existing heating system for Unit 32 is electric and there are no combustion air requirements for this Unit. Unit 31 has a gas fired boiler and water heater with a combined input of 625,000 Btu/hr. There is also an indoor pool in Unit 31 which has a pool dehumidification system that was upgraded in 1997. The 20 inch diameter duct does not connect to any equipment in either Unit 31 or 32 and this duct appears to be a remnant of a previous pool dehumidification system. It is my opinion that this duct is not required and can be capped and abandoned in place. The combustion air for Unit 31 is drawn through a large grate at grade into an area well and through two permanent openings into the mechanical room. Calculating the combustion air requirements based on the 2012 International Fuel Gas Code, there must be a minimum opening of 312 square inches in order to not restrict the combustion air path. Your proposed screen wall, along with the open tread stairs shown on Sheet A6.4 dated 7/23/14, far exceed this requirement. Please call with any questions. Sincerely, J. Drew Rader P.E. 7/22/14
