The services are supplemental to our agreement for professional services to RA Nelson & Associates dated July 11, 2014. Our services on the project consisted of an excavation observation to verify suitability of the foundation soil bearing conditions and our findings were submitted in a report dated July 15, 2014. We also observed the steel reinforcement placement for the reinforced concrete foundations, field reports dated 07-14-14 and 07-17-14 are attached. The inspections indicate the footing bearing soils are suitable to support the foundation design loads and the concrete reinforcement was installed in general conformance with the project plans and specifications. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The services were performed in accordance with our agreement for construction observation and testing services to RA Nelson & Associates dated July 11, 2014. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical previously conducted a subsurface study for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated January 20, 2010, Job No. 109 428A. We also provided recommendations for the building underdrain design in a report dated June 11, 2010, and reported on our observation of the building excavation in a letter dated August 12, 2010 under our Job No. 109 428B. The deck addition has been designed to be supported on two spread footing pads sized using an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf, as previously recommended. At the time of our site visit, the deck addition foundation excavation was complete for the two footing pads. The larger pad excavation was cut in one level, about 5 to 7 feet below the adjacent ground surface and the smaller pad excavation was cut in one level about 4 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The materials exposed in the bottom of the excavations consisted of medium hard, weathered claystone/siltstone bedrock. No free water was observed in the excavation and the weathered bedrock was moist. The conditions exposed in the excavation are generally consistent with those previously encountered on the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 2,000 psf. Any loose of disturbed material below footing areas should be removed prior to concrete placement. Other recommendations presented in our previous reports which are applicable should also be observed. Parker 303-841-7119 •Colorado Springs 719-6B-5562 •Silverthorne 970-468-1989 R.A. Nelson & Associates July 15, 2014 Page 2 The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the materials exposed within the foundation excavation and the previous limited subsurface exploration at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter.
