Frontage Road West, Suite 230 Vail, CO 81657 RE: Vail Valley Welcome Center Addition & Remodel 241 N. Frontage Road W#8150, Vail, CO Dear Henry: October 28, 2014 In response to the (9) structural discrepancy items listed by Ground Engineering Consultants dated October 2, 2014, October 9, 2014 and October 21, 2014 for the above mentioned project, Anderson & Hastings has provided remedial recommendations by means of RFC responses, and the attached structural observation reports and supporting detail drawings SX-5 and SX-6. Below are the resolution descriptions for each discrepancy. 1. Discrepancy Item #1: GROUND is requesting written approval from the EOR for adding column baseplates and anchoring them to the foundation in lieu of welding HSS to existing beams at the attic framing columns. • Per response to RFC No. 020, it is acceptable to provide bolted connections at the (6) interior attic framing columns in lieu of the welding to the existing beams. 2. Discrepancy Item #2: There are plates connecting the HSS to HSS connections of both brace elevations. GROUND is requesting clarification from the EOR , Picture #1 and #2 attached to the second page of daily report. • Several connections were found to be unacceptable and remedial connection details shown on drawings SX-5 and SX-6 wHre submitted with the structural observation report dated October 9, 2014 to provide adequate connections. 3. Discrepancy Item #3: GROUND was not provided the opportunity to inspect the Vertical HSS to existing wide flange beam at elevation "A" in the foundation before covered with concrete. • Per observation report dated September 12, 2014, it was noted that it is acceptable to weld the HSS columns to the top flange of the existing beam flanges found to be slightly off center, provided that the all-around weld as noted on the structural Consulting Structural! and Civil Engineers Union Terrace• 12596 West Bayaud Avenue, Suite 350•Lakewood,CO 80228 Phone (303) 433-8486 •Fax (303) 433-0408 ~tt\-O~Sl/ drawings could be achieved. Also, per response to RFC No. 008 the base connections were found acceptable at the north entry columns. 4. Discrepancy Item #4: Sloped HSS was cut in the field and at elevation "A" peak it was found welded three sides with a gap at the top (not welded) of 3/8".GROUND is requesting clarification from the EOR. Picture #3 attached to third page of daily report. • The connection reference was found t,o be acceptable per field observations dated October 9, 2014. 5. Discrepancy Item #5: GROUND received RFC No. 011 in regards to sloped HSS at the concrete walls; however, GROUND is requesting an approved copy form the Town of Vail. • It was recommended by Anderson & Hastings (per response to RFC No. 011) that in order to connect the HSS diagonal brace to the existing columns above the existing concrete curb, an additional HSS 4x4 horizontal member would need to be added along the top of the curb and welded between the existing columns/bracing. Also, the HSS diagonal brace requires continuity to the top of the roof structure through the existing horizontal HSS 7x5 that was not removed. These connections were observed during the field visit on October 9, 2014 and appeared to meet the requirements in RFC No. 011. 6. Discrepancy Item #7: At both elevation "B" grid B/13 and B/13. 7, the plates did not extend through the two existing columns as detailed in B/8201, GROUND is requesting clarification from the EOR, picture #1 is attached to the 2nd page of daily report. a. Per observation report dated October 9, 2014, it was determined that additional plates were required to extend through the existing columns as shown on Brace Frame Elevation B, sheet 8201. Remedial detail drawing SX-6 was provided in the field observation report for correction of this detail. 7. Discrepancy Item #8: SX-5 Detail at sloped HSS beam connection northeast corner grid 8/13. 7 was found with the added HSS not welded on top nor the bottom and with the plate still installed. This is not per the provided detail. a. After further review, it was determined that the top and bottom welds were not required (vertical side welds still required per details) with the plates still installed. 8. Discrepancy Item #10: West Moment connection at grid 8 was found with the back side vertical plate not having a PJP weld to the in-place plate and the front side had a filler rod in between the two plates, GROUND is requesting clarification EOR. a. Per discussion with GE Johnson, plates are to be welded to HSS beam at plate splices and as detailed, and plate spices are to have a partial penetration weld as detailed on SX-6. 9. Discrepancy Item #11: West moment connection bottom plate to HSS is not completed. a. Per discussion with GE Johnson, the welded connection has been addressed to provide welds per drawing SX-6. r_r, ·~_J J Anderson & Hastings Sincerely, /) j l >; ____ _} ---___ J Scott E. Beck, P.E. BAYAUI> AVE., SUITE 350 LAKEWOOD, COLORADO 80228 (303) 433-8486 PROJECT: Vail Valley Welcome Center PROJECT NO: 999-14-2016 CLIENT: GPSL Architects REPRESENTATIVES AT SITE: WORK IN PROGRESS DATE OF OBSERVATION: September 12, 2014 Dale Zerr -GE Johnson Brian Harley -GE Johnson Miriam Fox --Anderson & Hastings Demolition of existing non-structural elements is in progress. Forming of new concrete curbs and install of structural steel is to begin soon. OBSERVATIONS & ACTION REQUIRED: The field verified dimensions to the existing steel framing between Grids 13 and 13.7 vary from north to south. Based on the field dimensions, the new HSS 7x7 columns at the south entry are 2"+/-off the centerline of the existing W18 beams and may slightly bear on the existing perpendicular W8 beams. This is acceptable as long as the new columns can be welded to the top flange of the beams per the structural drawings (provide additional plate as needed). These field conditions are to be verified and coordinated with architectural. Dale proposed an alternate solution to the header details on sheet SOOl in order to utilize the HSS columns at the opening jambs. GE Johnson is to submit a fornml RFI of the proposed solution for further review. Reinforcing in the infill concrete curbs not detailed was discussed with Dale. It is acceptable to provide rebar similar to the curb details shown on S30 l. The revised curb detail per RFC #003 was discussed. See attached drawing SX-1. The additional clip angle connection details at the north and south entry trusses were discussed with Dale and have been submitted to be issued as an ASL See attached sketch SX-2 for details. Shoring is required along the length of the high roof bearing walls along Grid 13 and Grid 13.7. COPIES TO: Henry Pratt -GPSL Architects, John King -TOV, GE Johnson REPORT BY: Miriam Fox ANDERSON & HASTINGS CONSULTANTS, INC. 12596 W. BA YAUD A VE., SUITE 350 LAKEWOOD, COLORADO 80228 (303) 433-8486 PROJECT: Vail Valley Welcome Center PROJECT NO: 999-14-2016 DATE OF OBSERVATION: October 9, 2014 CLIENT: GPSL Architects REPRESENTATIVES AT SITE: Dale Zerr -GE Johnson Miriam Fox -Anderson & Hastings WORK IN PROGRESS Steel entry framing, bracing & connections are mostly complete. The new attic columns and floor framing is mostly complete -final connections and floor sheathing is in progress. Wall and roof framing at the new addition is in progress. Strap bracing at addition is installed and hold downs are in progress. Exterior entry and canopy roof framing has begun. OBSERVATIONS & ACTION REQUIRED: The connections of the HSS entry tube steel was observed regarding the Ground inspection discrepancies. See attached for remedial weld connection details as discussed with Dale. Per the discrepancy report and discussion with Dale, it was determined that the moment connection at Grid B requires additional plates on the south side of the existing HSS column as shown on Elevation B/S201, see attached for clarification details (similar to Detail B/S201 ). It was observed while onsite that the existing high roof framing was and is not currently supported on the north and south steel entry frames as originally anticipated. It appears that the existing ridge beam is supported by the interior roof trusses and cantilevers beyond to the exterior of the building. Also, the roof diaphragms appear not to have been tied into the existing exterior walls/brace frames. In order to transfer lateral loads appropriately, the roof diaphragm should have a positive attachment to the steel entry frames. This could be accomplished by building up the 2x top plates (noted on sheet S201) tight to the bottom of the existing structure and toe nailing together, or providing clips between the top of the frame to the bottom of the roof structure. This concern is to be further reviewed and discussed with the design team for the most feasible approach. It was observed that the connection of the attic framing ledger to exterior walls was inadequate after further review. The ledger was constructed with (2) 2x8 plates in lieu of the (1) 4x8 detailed. Per discussion with Dale, only one 2x8 was fastened to the exterior stud wall per the specified connection details on sheet S302. The additional outer 2x8 was fastened to the other 2x8 at each stud. With the attic framing bearing on the outer 2x8, proper attachment is required at this 2x8 also and must attach back to the wall framing as detailed. Provide a minimum of (3) 114'' diameter self-drilling screws (3W' min length) top and bottom of the outer ledger into each stud and at 8" max. spacing into the stud wall blocking. The following is a summary of the services provided on this date. We measured the applied product where accessible, referencing the manufacturers approved data sheet. At the time of observation, random measurements and averaged mils on the beams and columns showed that sections of the structural members appeared to be in general compliance with the product data sheet, the sections that failed and the minor corrections were to be addressed. Due to the proximity of the store front at the East and West Building Elevations, the exterior facing sections of the beams and columns of the Structural Gable Walls have a very thin if any intumescent product applied, we can not utilize the probe on our gauge because of the limited space. This issue was brought to the attention of the GC to be addressed. Total number of pages included in this report: 2 Have outstanding discrepancies been reported this date?
