GENERAL INTERIOR FINISH NOTES Where materials are applied on wa1ls, ceilings or structural elements required to have a fire-resistance rating or to be of noncombustible construction, they shall comply with the provisions of this section. Direct attachment and furred construction. Where walls and ceilings are required for any provision in this code to be of fire-resistance-rated or noncombustible construction, the interior finish material shall be applied directly against such construction or to furring strips not exceeding 1.75 inches (44 mm) applied directly against such surfaces. The intervening spaces between such furring strips shall be filled with inorganic or Class A material or shall be fireblocked at a maximum of 8 feet (2438 mm) in any direction in accordance with Section 717. Set-out construction. Where walls and ceilings are required to be of fire-resistance-rated or noncombustible construction and walls are set out or ceilings are dropped distances greater than specified in Section 803.4.1. Class A finish materials shall be used except where interior finish materials are protected on both sides by an automatic sprinkler system or attached to noncombustible backing or furring strips installed as specified in Section 803.4.1. The hangers and assembly members of such dropped ceilings that are below the main ceiling line shall be of noncombustible materials, except that in Type III and V construction, fire-retardant-treated wood shall be permitted. The construction of each set-out wall shall be of fire-resistance-rated construction as required elsewhere in this code. Materials. An interior wall or ceiling finish that is not more than 0.25 inch (6.4 mm) thick shall be applied directly against a noncombustible backing. INTERIOR WALL AND CEILING FINISH REQUIREMENTS FOR SPRINKLERED M AND B OCCUPANCIES EXIT ENCLOSURES AND PASSAGEWAYS: CLASS B CORRIDORS: CLASS C ROOMS AND ENCLOSED SPACES: CLASS C DUCTS AND AIR TRANSFER OPENINGS Duct and air transfer openings shall comply with IBC Section 716. See Mechanical Drawings SAFETY GLAZING GENERAL NOTES Glazing in the following locations will be of safety glazing material and conform to IBC Section 2406.3: 1. Ingress and egress doors except jalousies. 2. Fixed and sliding panels of sliding door assemblies and panels in swinging doors other than wardrobe doors. 3. Unframed swinging doors. 4. Fixed or operable panels adjacent to a door where the nearest exposed edge of the glazing is within a 24-inch (610 mm) arc of either vertical edge of the door in a closed position and where the bottom exposed edge of the glazing is less than 60 inches (1525 mm) above the walking surface. 5. Individual fixed or operable panels, other than those locations described above, that meet all of the following conditions: a. Exposed area of an individual pane greater than 9 square feet (0.84 m2). b. Exposed bottom edge less than 18 inches (457 mm) above the floor. c. Exposed top edge greater than 36 inches (914 mm) above the floor. d. One or more walking surfaces within 36 inches (914 mm) horizontally of the plane of the glazing. 6. Walls enclosing stairway landings or within 5 feet (1525 mm) of the bottom and top of stairways where the bottom edge of the glass is less than 60 inches (1525 mm) above a walking surface. FIRE BLOCKING GENERAL NOTES Fire blocks should be provided in accordance with Section 717.1 in the following locations: 1. In concealed spaces of stud walls and partitions, including furred spaces, at the ceiling and floor levels. 2. In concealed spaces of stud walls and partitions, including furred spaces. At 10-foot (3048 mm) intervals along the length of the wall. 3. At all interconnections between concealed vertical and horizontal spaces such as occur at soffits, drop ceilings and cove ceilings. 4. In concealed spaces between stair stringers at the top and bottom of the run and between studs along and in line with the run of stairs if the walls under the stairs are unfinished. 5. In openings around vents, pipes, ducts, chimneys, fireplaces and similar openings that afford a passage for fire at ceiling and floor levels, with noncombustible materials. 6. At openings between attic spaces and chimney chases for factory-built chimneys.
