We understand a soils evaluation was not performed prior to construction of the footings for the
referenced project. Based on our background review the site is mapped by Kellog' and others as
Pinedale Till. Pinedale Till is of late Pleistocene age and consists primarily of cobbles and
boulders with a matrix of poorly sorted sand containing minor amounts of clay and silt. CRE
Design Engineering visited the subject site on April 1, 2015 in order to perform the following
observation.
Open Excavation: The purpose of the open excavation observation was to verify that the
exposed soils in the excavation were suitable for the foundation type constructed. During my
site visit I observed the "Bigfoot"footings that were constructed for the addition to the existing
residence. The footings are constructed approximately 4 feet below grade and are bearing on
the Pinedale Till consisting of brown, moist, medium dense, sand with gravel and cobbles.
Based on our observations and our experience with similar materials, the bearing soils are
adequate for an allowable bearing capacity of 2,500 pound per square foot.
