Vail,Colorado 81657
Dear PEC members and Town of Vail Community Development staff,
The Colorado Ski Museum, Inc. is requesting permission to amend the Conditional Use Permit
for the Town of Vail owned space it occupies on the 3"d level of the Vail Village Transportation
Center(VVTC).The physical address is 231 S.Frontage Road East,Vail Colorado;Parcel#
210108227002. Our proposal includes new construction of approximately 630 square feet(330
net new),and a complete remodel of the interior of the existing 3,600 sq.ft.space.
The proposed expansion and modernization is long overdue but is especially timely now when the
Town of Vail has recognized the need for a facelift of the Vail Village Transportation Center and
is in the process of remodeling its Welcome Center which sits directly above the Museum. The
proposed expanded footprint and removal of the drop ceilings in the existing space will provide I
the minimum depth and height required to completely modernize the exhibit content, layout and
flow of this dated facility.
The Museum is already one of Vail's most visited cultural/educational institutions, proudly
hosting 75,000 visitors each year who enjoy being immersed in the history and heritage of skiing.
A vastly improved Museum will enhance the off-mountain and/or indoor amenities and
experiences non-skiing guests are actively seeking in the commercial core. The Museum's
visitors, many of which are enticed to make a stop in Vail by the highway signs, tend to linger
and explore the entire Village. These improvements will ensure the facility complies with world-
class standards, furthering supporting Vail Town Council desire to expand upon its community
infrastructure as the foundation of the community's success with particular emphasis on an
abundance of recreational, culture and educational opportunities while building capacity for
future leaders.
This 38-year-old non-profit institution was a result of a joint application to the Colorado
Centennial Bi-Centennial Celebration Committee submitted in 1975 by Town of Vail Manager
Terry Minger and Vail Centennial Ski Museum,Inc.aka Colorado Ski Museum.Along with
Minger, the first Board of Directors was made up of a cross section of Vail and Colorado ski
industry stakeholders. It included Mayor John Dobson-Town of Vail,Peter Seibert-Vail
Associates,Robert Parker-Vail Associates,Donald Simonton-High Country Parish,Dale McCall- i
Vail Businessman,J.D.Abbott-Vail Businessman, William Lucas-U.S.Forest Service,Louis
Livingston-National Ski Patrol,Merrill Hastings-Colorado Magazine,Neil Allen Public Service
Company,Earl Clark-106 Mountain Association and Tod Martin—Colorado Ski Country,USA.

Once approved Town of Vail purchased the Mountain Bell building.which was located at the
main intersection of Vail Road and Meadow Drive, for its new Museum. The Museum gave up
ownership of the Mountain Bell building and was moved to its present location as part of the re-
development of the Vail Village Inn. The Town of Vail owned space under La Bottega was
originally planned for the re-location of the Museum but at the last minute the current space,
designed for offices, was chosen because it had higher visibility and traffic.
Details of the Ski Museum Proposal
• The space is located in a general use zone which supports the current use.No change of
use is being proposed.
• Materials used on the exterior will be compatible with materials already in use in the
VVTC. Design details include a metal roof/awning, large modern windows, sandstone
rock knee walls and stucco walls.
• The 10 foot deep expansion will fill in the underutilized"dead spaces"that exist in the
front of the building to the east and west of the 4th floor overlook and Museum's current
entryway.
• The expansion does not interfere with the pedestrian traffic flow on the 3'd levels plaza.
Access to the stairs, bathrooms and parking structure entry/exits will be maintained at
current levels.
• The expansion will not require any additional structural supports be added as it is being
designed and engineered to sit upon the existing support pillars already in place in the
VVTC.
• The existing mechanical room and air in-take vents supporting the building's air handing
system limit design flexibility. The only option for a new entrance/exit is the far east side
of the facility so as not to block the intake vent.
• A sloping metal roof that will double as an awning for the windows is being proposed to
cover the expansion. The awning will be designed to tie into the front edges of rounded
overlook on the 4th level.Functionality of the overlook will be retained.
• Employee housing mitigation for the 330 net new square foot space will be calculated
using the"convention space"criteria.
• A snowmelt system is already in place on the plaza directly in front of the proposed
addition.
• Landscaping for the 314 level plaza is handled by the Town of Vail.
Expanding the depth of the facility by 10 feet will provide the minimum depth required to
completely modernize the interior and flow of this dated facility. The new space will allow for a
logical flow through the exhibit areas which will profoundly improve the educational experience.
• The interior modernization will include removal of the drop ceilings from the entire 3,600
square foot facility in order to provide a more spacious feeling. The wiring, pipes and
vents in the ceiling that support the VVTC center 3`d and 4th floor will be"hidden"
through paint and drywall"boxes".
• The existing air handling system mechanical room and air intake vents dictate the interior
space reconfiguration.A new entry/exit will be on the far eastern front side of the
Museum so as not to block the vent.
• The Welcome station and Gift Shop will be situated to the right(east)of the new
entry/exit. Interpretation and presentation of the museums exemplary collection will be
put center stage using modern museum displays and presentation technologies.A small
"theater style"viewing area will be situated on the western 1/3 of the facility giving
visitors the opportunity to enjoy, undisturbed, our extensive collection of historical
documentaries and films including Climb to Glory which has recently been released.
• In addition to the theater, the western 1/3 includes back of the house functions. The
existing kitchen and retail storage space will remain in their current location. The
Museum's 2-person office will be adjusted to make room for a small"theater".
• A 3rd exit can be accommodated through the western wall of the facility exiting into the
public areas on the interior of the 3`d level of the VVTC.
• The 3 stall unisex bathroom will be reconfigured into 2 separate ADA compliant
bathrooms.
Thank you for your consideration of our request to modify the Conditional Use Permit for this
space.
Sincerely,
Susie Tiossem
