Ref: Proposed Museum Expansion Structural Engineering Study
Dear Ms Tjossem:
Based on the sketches Mr. Ned Gwathmey sent us for the proposed ski museum expansion and
the existing building drawings for the Vail Transportation Center, which we were the structural
engineers of record in 1990, we have determined no additional structural supports down through
the garage will be required for this renovation. The proposed expansion includes moving the
south wall of the museum approximately 11 feet to the south and establishing a shed roof
attached to the fourth level of the garage adjacent to the visitors center over the new addition.
We have reviewed the visitor center's fourth level steel framing and the third level precast
concrete floor framing for the new floor and roof loadings from the new addition, and have found
the existing building framing adequate to support the changes.
The new bearing wall and the new roof framing are recommended to be constructed using light
weight materials and finishes. There are a few details and designs that will still be required to
finalize the proposed construction for the renovation, but these should be fairly straight forward.
