Re: Vail Cascade Parking Structure 2015
(M&N Ref.#: 10168.00)
Dear Ms. Cohen:
As requested, Monroe &Newell Engineers, Inc. has reviewed the original construction
documents for the parking structure. The purpose of our review was to determine the
structural feasibility of using the current tennis court areas for parking.
The original structural drawings were prepared in 1982 under the 1979 Uniform Building
Code. The general notes on the drawings indicate that the tennis court areas were
designed for a 50 psf live load. This live load requirement exceeds the current
requirement of 40 psf for passenger car garage.
The east end of the parking structure is not covered by the tennis court building. Per the
general notes this area was designed for a snow load of 75 psf. The 10 ft wide by 24 inch
deep double tees in the area are spanning approximately 40 ft instead of the 60 ft spans
that are typical. Based on published span tables in order to support 75 psf snow load,
these tees would require 8-1/2 inch diameter stands per leg which would give the tees a
capacity of approximately 100 psf live load . Based on this, it is our opinion this area is
adequate for parking access and will support van and/or light truck loading of
approximately 10,0001bs.axle loads.
