I. Introduction
An asbestos assessment survey was conducted by Mr. Brandon Sinkbeil for Mr. Greg Conway.
Mr. Sinkbeil is the field Representative, EPA accreditation #13442. The purpose of the survey
was to locate, sample, and assess suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACM).
II. Structural Design
T'he building is a two-story, framed residence located at 1816 Sunburst Drive in Vail, CO
81657.
III. Sampling and Analytical Procedures
Random bulk samples, representative of the suspect asbestos-containing building materials
(ACBM) of each homogeneous area (HA), were collected according to the guidelines published
as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Final Rule: Title II of the Toxic Substances
Control Act (TSCA), 15 USC, Sections 2641 through 2654 and in compliance with 40 CFR,
Part 763. Representative sampling is based on the following criteria:
1. The distribution of the suspect material throughout the HA.
2. The suspect material's physical characteristics and application.
3. Random sampling patterns determined for each HA.
Suspect materials sampled and analyzed should be considered to be representative of materials
in each HA if:
1. They exhibit similar physical characteristics.
2. The application of the sampled material can be correlated to the application of
unsampled material.
Bulk samples collected were analyzed utilizing the EPA's Method for the Detemvnation of
Asbestos in Bulk Building Materials (EPA 600/R/116, July, 1993) and the McCrone Research
Institute's The Asbestos Particle Atlas as methods references.
Analysis of the bulk samples was performed on the "date reported," as listed in the bulk-sample
analysis report. Condition assessments were performed by the accredited inspector at the time
of inspection.
IV. Notes on Report Format
Suspect materials alike in appearance and application were sampled as HAs. Suspect materials
were divided into three classifications:
1. Surfacing material: sprayed or troweled onto structural building member.
2. Thermal systems insulation: any type of pipe, boiler, tank, or insulation.
3. Miscellaneous: other suspect materials, including flooring, ceiling tiles, insulation,
and finishing materials.
HAs found to contain asbestos aze described in the following section. Diagranunatic floor plans
showing approximate sample location of these areas were not available.
Condition assessments and response-action recommendations for asbestos containing HAs aze
also in the following section. Recommendations may be for more than one HA, if materials aze
alike.
Recommendations are either "general" or "immediate." Immediate recommendations indicate
an imminent hazazd and should be addressed as soon as possible.
V. Inspector Comments
The following is a summary of the types of possible asbestos-containing materials found at the
Cahalin residence.

Reservoirs Environmental, Inc. has analyzed the following samples for asbestos content as per your
request. The analysis has been completed in general accordance with the appropriate methodology as
stated in the attached analysis table. The results have been submitted to your office.

and the sole property of the customer. Reservoirs Environmental, Inc. will not discuss any part of this study
with personnel other than those of the client. The results described in this report only apply to the samples

Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Remodel to Existing Duplex, 1816
Sunburst Drive, Vail, Colorado.
Dear Crreg:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-pawlak Geotechnical, Ync. observed the
excavation at the subject site on October 5, 6 and 9, 2006 to evaluate the :toils exposed fox
foundation support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the
foundation design are presented in this report. The services were perfarnxed in accordance
wi#h our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you dated September 28, 2006.
proposed Construction: The existing duplex is being remodeled tv create a single
residence. Each duplex unit has a basement level. A great roo~nn w~11 be created by removing
exterior walls and the breezeway between the units. The front entry will also be enclosed
Conventional wood frame construction will be used above grade with cast-in-place concrete
foundation walls below grade. Ground floor will be structurally supported. The foundation
was designed with a~n assumed allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 pounds per square
foot (psf). The new foundation walls will be doweled into the existing below grade walls.
Based on our observation of the soils exposed i~ the bottom of the excavation, we requested
that Redwine Engineers, Inc. redesign the foundation for 1,500 psf. Tae new footings will be
2 feet wide.
Field Observations: At the time of our October 5`~ and 6"` site visit, foundation excavations
had been completed at the east ar-d west ends of the breezeway and cut in one level from
about 4 to 6 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the
excavation consisted of daz>r brown, soft, loose, slightly clayey to clayey, sand and silt fill
with organics and roots and scattered angular cobbles and boulders. Na free water was
encountered in the excavations and the soils were moist to very waist. We recommended that

the soft soils be renwved to expose the relatively dense, natural, clayey sand with scattered
angular cabbies and boulders. Native materials will likely be encountered 2 to 4 feet below
the bottom of the existing excavations.
At the time of our ~C'tober 9~' site visit, foundation excavations had been overexcavated about
2 td 4 feet. The existing 4 inch diameter perimeter drainpipe was exposed in a portion of the
east excavation bottom adjacent to the south unit wail. The soils exposed in the bottom of the
east excavation were loose to about 6 inches and consisted of dark brown, slightly clayey to
clayey sand and silt fill with scattered cobbles and boulders overlying relatively dense, native
granular soils at a depth of about 6 to I2 inches. We recommended that the loose fill soils be
properly compacted. The soils exposed in the bottom of the west excavation consisted of
about 4 to 1$ inches of loose dark brown, slightly clayey to Clayey sand and silt fiA with
scattered angular cobbles and boulders overlying relatively dense, native granular soils. The
deepest fill zones rwere adjacent to the existing basement walls. A large boulder about 2 to 3
feet in diameter was embedded in the bottom of thes excavation. No free water was
encountiered in the excavations and the soils were utoist. We recommended that the loose fill
soils be removed near the existing unit walls and the entire excavation bottom be properly
compacted.
We understand that the footings will vary in thickness fibm about 8 to l 8 inches due to the
adjacent overexcavation depths in the bottom of the vaest excavation. W e recommended that
the footing be doweled into the existing boulder. ]n addition, we recommended that the
excavation be protected from precipitation events and ground surface and roof water runoff.
Since the new stem walls at the front entry (west end of breezeway) will be constructed to and
against the edge of the existing from entry slab, backfilling of the interior side of the wall rnrill
be impossible. We recommend that knockouts be installed in the formwork to allow'
baclcfilling with ~ lightweikght lean concrete such as concrete with an aggregate filler of
ptu7aice, scoria, expanded vertnictYlite, or expanded perlite. The concrete should have a
weight of less man 70 pounds per cubic fast. As an aiternative to using lightweight concrete,
place a lightweight polymer, such as Uretek into the void space. We recommend that a

company experienced in lightweight polymers be contacted such as Concrete Stabilization
Technologies, Inc. at 303-306-9191,
Foundation Recommendations: Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and
the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil
designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1,500 psf should be adequate for support of
the proposed remodel. 'X he exposed soils tend to compress when wetted and there could be
some post~onstructivn settlement of the fouaadadan if the bearing soils become wet.
Limitations: The recommendations submitted iu this le4xer are based on our observation of
the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration
to evaluate the subsurface co~aditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based an the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support
than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this
report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the
cfature and extent ofvariations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling
would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change
the recommendations eorrtained in this letter. Our services do not include determining the
presence, prevention or possibility of meld or other biological cornaminants (MOBC)
developing in the future. If the client is concerned about MO~C, then a professional in this
special field ofpractice should be consulted.
