Dear Mr. Kendall:
Cesare, Inc. (Cesare) personnel visited the site to conduct an open excavation observation for the
proposed continuous footing foundation for the Galvin Residence renovation. The continuous
footing foundation is located on the east side of the party wall for Units 8 and 9 at an elevation of
8,165.75 feet. Soils encountered at the proposed bottom of the footing elevation were native
medium dense sand, with silt and gravel, with a trace of cobbles, low to no plasticity, slightly moist,
and reddish brown in color. Random T-probe strikes and relative nuclear densities indicated the
subgrade was medium dense.
Prior to leaving the site, Cesare recommended to you that the native soils be compacted again prior
to concrete placement with a jumping jack or walk behind sheepsfoot. The additional compaction
will help to minimize potential settlement. Cesare also recommended the soils be covered and
heated prior to concrete placement.
It is Cesare's opinion, the subgrade soils exposed for the base of the continuous footing foundation
will support a foundation system designed for a maximum allowable soil bearing pressure of 3,000
pounds per square foot (psf), with a low risk of movement. Refer to Photos 1 and 2.
