Compliance Options for Additions
There are three approaches by which an addition can comply with the code:

. The addition as defined above meets all code requirements. This approach does not require that the
original portion of the building meet code requirements.
. If the building with the addition complies with the code, the addition will also comply, regardless of
whether the addition complies alone. For example, a sunroom that does not comply with the code is
added to a house. If the entire house (with the sunroom) complies, the addition also complies.
. Additions less than 500 ft2 (46.5 m2) of conditioned floor area may meet the prescriptive envelope
requirements in Tablel. To use this table, the total area of windows, doors, and skylights cannot
exceed 40% of the gross wall and roof area of the addition.

Gzeez�ill Court, Town of Vail, Eag�e Couz�ty, Colozado. 'I'k�e purpose of our site visits was to
observe az�d test t�e so�l exposed iz� the foundation exca,vation for a proposed temodel.
The excavation was located iz�side o� the crawl space under the nortbeast, corner of the
residence. Zt coz�sxsted o� oz�e t�ez�c� adjacent to the footings in the cravv� s�ace, zazxgiz�g frozxa one
foot to about tllrec feet b�low the existing foo�gs.
The soil ex�osed at t�e bottom of the trenches consist,�d of sandy gzaveZ vv�tka cobbles
a�d sk�ale bedrock. 7'he soil exposed in the foundation excavatian for the proposed remodel is
`�uitable for the designed maximum allowable soil beari�g pressure of ,2000 psf. The bottom of
the excavation was compacted So, f� spots were not reported.
