The purpose of our site visits was to observe and test the soils exposed in the foundation excavation for the proposed addition, in order to verify the bearing capacity used for the design of the proposed addition. The excavation was located on the north •side of the existing, west side of the duplex. One bench was excavated to the elevation of the bottorr- of footings of the existing part of the residence and several holes for isolated footing pads were excavated to the west al`the lower bench and about 4 and 8 feet higher than the bench. The additional site visits were required to verify that the bottom of the entire excavation (bench and pads) were excavated thrqugh the unsuitable fill and topsoil anal into the underlying, sandy gravel with cobbles and bouldbrs. The soil exposed in the foundation excavation is suitable for the designed bearing capacity of 2000psf. Exterior backfill should be compacted ator near the optimum mvistwe content to at least 95% of the maximum standard Proctor density under pavement, sidewalk and patio areas and to at least 90% of the traaxi¢r-urn standard Proctor density under landscaped areas. They should use mechanical methods of compaction. Do not puddle the foundation excavation. The site surrounding the building structure should slope away from the building in all directiogs. A, minimum of 1 Z inches in the first 10 feet is recommended in unpaved areas, and three inches in the first 10 feet in paved areas. The top of the granular foundation backfill should be covered with a minimum of 1 foot of relatively irtlperviaus fill to reduce the potential of surface water infiltrating the foundation subsoils. Surface water naturally draining toward the proposed building site should be diverted around and away fro~nu it by means of drainage swales or other approved rrlethods. The roof drains and downspouts should extend and discharge beyoxtd the limits of the backfill. This report has been prepared according to locally accepted professional Geotechnical engineering standards. There is no other warranty either expressed or implied.
