As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnicai, Inc. observed the
excavations at the subject site on July 29, 2008 to evaluaie the soils exposed for foundation
support. The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are
presented in this report. 7'he services were perFormed in accordance with our Professional
Services Agreement for geotechnical engineering services to TL Construclion dated July 28,
2008.
prnposed Construction: The proposed decks will be constructed adjacent to the northwest
and southwest sides oFthe existing east condominium building. Conventional wood frame
construction will be used. The deck footings were designed with an assumed allowable soil
bearing pressure of 1,200 pounds per square foot (ps�.
Field Observatioos: At the time of our site visit, each of the foundation excavations had
been cut in one level about 3 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the
bottoms of the excavations consisted of relatively dense, silty to very silty, slightly gravelly
sand. The upper 4 inches of the subgrade soils were observed to be loose and disturbed and
the excavation bottoms were not level. No free water was observed in the excavations and
the soils were generally moist.
Foundation Recommendations: Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and
the nature of the proposed construction, spread t'ootings placed on the undisturbed natural soil
designed fbr an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1,200 psf should be adequate for support of

the proposed decks. The exposed soils tend to compress when wetted and there could be
some post-construction settlernent of the footings if the bearing soils become wet.
Footings should be a minimum width of 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils in
footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed
natural soiis. The excavation bottoms should then be tlattened and compacted until
settlement ceases prior to concrete placement. Exterior footings should be provided with
adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection.
Limitations: The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of
the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration
to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This
study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support
than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this
report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the
nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling
would be required. Tt is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change
the recommendations contained in this letter. Our services do not include determining the
presence, prevention or possibility of motd or other biological contaminants (MOBC)
developing in the future. Ifthe client is concerned about MOBC, then a professional in this
special field of practice should be consulted.

o Overhead services are not allowed in the Town of Vail.
❑ Underground services shall be in conduit (PVC) from the utillty transformer to the electric meter, main disconnect
switch, and to the first electrical distribution circuit breaker panel.
❑ The main disconnect switch shall be readily accessib/e, and located next to the meter on the exterior wall of the
structure. All underground conduits are required to be inspected before back-filling the trench.
o In multi-family dwelling units, no electrical wiring or feeder cables shall pass from one unit to another. Common walls
and spaces are exempt.
❑ NM Cable (Romex) can be used only in sing/e and multi-family dwellings. Type NM cannot be used in a»y
building mixed with Type A,B.E,F,H,I,M SS occupancies.
❑ Aluminum conductors smaller than size #8 are not permitted.
TOWN OF VAIL ELECTRICAL PERMIT GUIDELINES
❑ All installations of exterior hot tubs or spa's require a DRB approval from planning. This application will not be
accepted without a copy of the DRB approval foRn attached (if applicable).
o If this permit is for installation of an exterior hot tub or spa on a new elevated platform or deck over 30" above grade,
you must also obtain a building permit.
❑ If this peRnit is for installation of an exterior hot tub or spa on any existing deck or elevated platform, a structu�al
engineer must review the existing condition and verify that it will support the added concentrated load. Please provide
a copy of the structural engineers wet stamped letter or drawing with this application.
o If this is a remodel in a multi-family building with a homeowners association, a letter of permission from the association
is required.
❑ If this permit is for a commercial space, two (2) sets of stamped drawings are required. E/ectrical one-line and panel
schedules arB required if load is added or dishibution is altered.
