Gentlemen:
As requested, Monroe ~ Newell Engineers, Inc, has reviewed your design sketch
received on July 20, 2006. The purpose of the review was to provide our opinion on the
structural impact of the garden, as it concerns the load capacity of the roof.
The roof of the building is precast concrete double tees that span north-south across the
width of the building. These double tees are designed to support themselves, the weight
of the roofing materials, and approximately 75 pounds per square foot of snow load (live
load).
The building code required live load for residential use of the roof is 4D psf, which will
leave 3S psf to accommodate the weight of the materials to finish the garden- In our
opinion, the weight of the finishes shown on your sketch fall within this criteria.
However, any finishes to be left on the roof deck over winter should be very light (in the
5 psf range}. This loading reduces the snow load capacity of the roof, which at
approximately 75 psf is already below current Town of Vail requirements for new
construction.
Likewise, we do not recommend realigning the make up air unit since this has potential
to increase the stress to the existing double tees by moving the weight of the unit farther
from the end of the tees.
These recommendations are based on our existing knowledge of the roof structure.

was Justified by x-raying the existing precast tees to determine the actual number of pre-
tensioning cables in the tee legs. At the time, we determined the tees which would
support the hot tub had additional capacity. We believe the reason for this was because
those tees were constructed the same as the rest of the roof tees but spanned a shorter
distance.
If additional investigation is desired, the typical longer span double tees could be x-rayed
and that information used to determine if additional loading is available. We are not
optimistic that additional capacity is available-

This letter is intended to describe the full scope of work for changes to the fire sprinkler system that
will be pertormed by Western States Fire Protection at the Marriott Unit 4D.
Required modifications to the fire sprinkler system are as follows:
Relocate 11/2 cpvc fire sprinkler line to accommodate installation of a new window at terrace level.
It is our understanding that this letter will be sufficient to obtain a permit to proceed with the work
described above. No other work wilt be done without authorization from VFES. If further information is
required to issue a permit pl8ase contact our office in Glenwood Springs at 970-818-3294.
