Re: Explanation of Fire Pump
Dave,
The purpose of the pump on the fire sprinkler system is to maintain the required calculated pressure on
the fire sprinkler system if a sprinkler head opens in the event of a fire.
As per NFPA 70 Article 695:
“695.1 (B) Not Covered. This article does not cover the following:
(1) The performance, maintenance, and acceptance testing of the fire pump system, and the internal wiring
of the components of the system.
(2) Pressure maintenance (jockey or makeup) pumps “
It should also be noted that NFPA 70 article 695 references NFPA 13 and NFPA 20, and as such is
generally accepted to refer to commercial fire pumps. Per NFPA 13D (The Standard for the Installation of
Sprinkler Systems in One and Two Family Dwellings) residential pumps do not need to be listed, nor does
13D reference NFPA20 or NFAP70.
The method that was used to calculate the needed pressure and thus the size of the pump were done
according to NFPA 13D, the standard for sprinkler systems in one and two family dwellings.
If you have any questions on any of the above, please feel free to call on us.
Thank you,
Kevin Lasky
