Michele Davis, executive assistant at the Doubletree Hotel, poses with 'The Zimmer,' a first -class
luxury limo -van that will be used to transport guests and other Vail visitors to and from the Cafe
Colorado and the Altitude Club.
We're one hot. bus ...
By Cara DeGette
Daily staff writer
Beginning today, the Doubletree
Hotel is running a new bus that is
unlike any bus you have ever seen.
The Zimmer is the Doubletree's
latest addition in a constant attempt
to please customers and provide
transportation to guests dining at
the Cafe Colorado or partying at
the Altitude Club, according to
Kirsti Pell, director of marketing
and director of Zimmer marketing
for the hotel.
"It looks kind of like a Darth
Vader helmet," she said.
The bus, built in 1988 by the
now - defunct East Coast' based
Zimmer Motorcoach Corp., is 33
feet long and seats 11 people, plus
a driver, Pell said. The bus is
stocked with a 19 -inch television
set, a VCR, a stereo system, a
microwave, a refrigerator and a full
bar (which will not be used), Pell
said.
She called the $110,000 Zimmer
"an extremely expensive cus-
tomized vehicle," and said it is the
only one in Vail Valley, and perhaps
the entire state of Colorado.
The interior of the bus includes
plush royal -blue leather seats; the
exterior is black Fibergl ,7s. It has
huge windows and a customized
ski rack built in, Pell said.
On the side is written "The
Palm -Aire Doubletree Hotel,"
which indicates the new owner of
the hotel, Katzoff Resorts Inc.,
which also owns the Palm -Aire Spa
resort in Florida. Pell said the
owner originally was going to use
the Zimmer at the Palm -Aire Spa as
a beach shuttle, but decided to
bring it to Vail instead.
The Zimmer will run from 6 p.m
to 2 a.m., Pell said. It will be used
primarily to shuttle patrons from
their condominiums or hotels to the
Altitude Club and the Colorado
Cafe, both in the Doubletree. For
now, the Zimmer will limit its ser-
vice from West Vail to Golden
Peak, she said. In the future, the
hotel may also use it for special
groups and activities, she said.
The hotel currently has four
drivers, with class S limosine licen-
ses, who are able to drive the Zim-
mer. They will wear ski sweaters
and the Doubletree turtleneck to
promote a ski -lodge image, *'
said.
The Zimmer use-
gasoline but the staff`
figured out what
mileage is.
