Some operated in a manner that did not disturb the owners and guests of the Mountain Haus and others have definitely not. The George started out as a restaurant with a bar, but has deteriorated into a bar onlv, that is causing continual problems to the owners and guests. In the last yeaz, my wife and I have had more than one unpleasant and annoying encounter with patrons of The George. In each case, the persons had obviously had too much to drink and were in belligerent moods. They were verbally abusive to us and harassed us as we entered the building after returning from dinner and an evening walk. On other occasions, persons tried to enter the spa area that is on the same floor as the The George. They became very nasty when we refused to let them enter the spa area. There have been other . instances when unwanted bar patrons wanted to get on the lower floor elevator and ride to the upper floors when they weren't guests or owners in the Mountain Haus. I urge you to not renew the liquor license for The George and not to grant a liquor license to any business tha.t is not truly a full time restaurant. Sincerely . Je R. For the last couple of years, I hsve hcard cortinuous cpmplaints from her ovmers as well as the managemcnt staff at The Mowitain Haus regarding thiy. The complaints are the result of the noise, sraoke and vandalism to the buiIding, that corncs about as a result af the success The George is experiencing as a bar vs. a restaurant. I have been coming to The Mountain Hatts for pver fifteen years and have sce sevcral restauratts operate in the location now occupied by The George. None of those operations resuIted ia the number of complaints now being experienced by owners or s staying at The Mountaia Yaus. It is my hope that with your help, the owners and management at 'Y'he Mountain Haus aad the oRmers of The George can find a way to work togther to resolve these ongaing issues in the near future. LORELEI DONALDSON, CITY CLERK TOWN OF VAIL 75 South Frontage Road Vail, Colorado 81657 Dear Madam: I am the owner of two units at the Mountain Haus Numbers 106 and 438. Unit 106 is exactly above of The George, so I have experienced serious discomforts as a result of this restaurant becoming a bar with very noisy and disorderly patrons. In past years when we had other restaurants operating, we never had any compliants, because they were true restaurants, not simulated bars. In the last two years the level of noise and disturbance has been increasing constantly. Therefore my request to you is to ask The George owners to operate in compliance with the requirements of its license.. ASSET MANAGEMENT October 29, 1999 Lorelei Donaldson City Clerk Town of Vail 75 South Frontage Road Vail, CO 81657 Deaz Ms. Donaldson I am writing to you regarding the renewal of the liquor licensee for The George Restaurant at the Mountain Haus in Vail. We have owned a condominium unit at the Mountain Haus for over a year after having rented units for over fifteen years. When The George first opened, it was a place that we could go to at night to get a bite to eat and a drink. We often sent one of our daughters there for dinner when we were going out and she was home alone. It was also a place from which we could order food and have it delivered to our room. Last year, it began to change. They seemed to de-emphasize food and focus on being a bar. The clientele seemed to change from a mix of visitors and locals to almost all locals. We have to pass by The George to get to our storage bin and to the exercise room. Our daughters started to feel uncomfortable going down there themselves. There were people hanging out in the hallway outside the bar who were often slightly or not so slightly drunk. We were made to feel that once the evening fell, the basement of the Mountain Haus didn't belong to us anymore. We would like an establishment that was more like the way the George used to be — a place to eat as well as drink and a place that.ve felt was safe for tr family. Unfortunately, the "new" George does not meet either of these desires. We are the owners ofUnit 677 in the Maurntin Haus and are writing to express serious concern regarding the operation of The George Restaurant and the renewai of its lic}uor iicense. In the first place, The George Restaurant has remaved the restauraM furniture, hes sp curtailed its menu that, iti effect, it longer operates as a restaurant and, ia fact, devotes aii of its space to the operatioa of a bar and tavcm. As a result, its pafrons are not restauraut patrvns but bar patsons. Wc underst$nd that The George has disclaimed any responsibility for the conduct of its patrons ootside of its doors, regardtess of thir level of intaxication. Yet its patrons have been uihy vf a continuing pattem of disordery conduct, includi»g urmating inside and immediately autside the door af the building, sex tcts oa the hallway stairs rigit outside The George's door. rowdiness, fights and threatenl figbts, abusive language and noise, numerous visibly imocicated patroas, profaaity, noise and diste, rbances offensive to residents of the building and, in fact, to tose passing by. I was told on both occasions that the George only serves food during the winter. I noticed that they had taken out the dinning booths from what used to be the dinning area. The space in the basement of the Mountain Haus, were The George is located, has always been a restaurant. A restaurant is a very compatible use within the Mountain Haus and benefits the Mountain Haus as well as The Town of Vail. A bar within a residential condominium such as the Mountain Haus is not a compatible use and has caused problem for the owners of the Mountain Haus. The Town of Vail has a bar across the square from the Mountain Haus and one just across the bridge. I don't believe The Town of Vail needs another bar at the entrance to our town.
