FR: Annie Fox RE: A.DDITIONAL SERVICE cc: Steve Thompson/ BUDGET FILE Susan Boyd, Library Suzanne Silverthorn, Public Affairs Ron Braden, Data Processing The following is a justification for a new project. The project is a community bulletin board. The funds requested are for a£easibility study. The departments conducting the background work would be the library, public affairs and data processing. Coordinating the study would be library staff. DESCRIPTION: Community Information Database A Community Information Database contains information that can be accessed from a computer in one's horae, via modem. This information can also retrieved from a InforMation Kiosks at a central site. Typical information held in a Community Information Database includes: local government meeting agendas and notes from the meeting. Local calendar information, including special events. Local databases such as childcare databases. Community agencies that provide services or information needed by the community. Meeting dates, contact people so on. I have included a sample of the Pikes Peak Community database. If the Administration/Council wishes we can show them a demo of several community databases. ISSUES THE FEASIBILITY STUDY WOULD ADDRESS: .Are community bulletin boards used successfully in other areas to communicate information? Benchmark other systems to know what the._options are. .What are the packages successfully used in other areas? Are tag fields used or a free form format. .What are the costs to establish a community database? What are the costs to maintain a community database? What funding options are available? Percentage of local cable •license revenue, Katy grants, licensing fees for data included. ; Specifications for equipment and staffing. Funds requested would not cover staff time but would cover ~ telephone expenses, travel expenses so on incurred by the ~ project. ~ Please review enclosed examPles. The exam les ` p provide a clear ind.icator on the potential of a community bulletin boarde r ; ~ a WYSE 1~`old Down ALT key for Function Menu .
