As Director of Communications for the Vail Valley Chamber & Tourism Bureau (WCTB) for the past five years, I have gained an intimate knowledge of the event process including planning, promotion and execution. From the Mountain Games to Vail America Days, from Big Wheel to Oktoberfest, I have worked or volunteered for the bulk of Vail's major events. With this experience, I have learned to recognize the elements of successful events. I believe that a multitude of profitable and diverse events are a key component to the future success of Vail. The strategic priorities and tactics outlined in the CSE's 2002-2005 Strategic Plan provide a solid framework for the CSE to attract, support and evaluate both new and existing events in Vail. Within that framework, I believe the CSE can improve its capabilities in two specifics areas; .coordinating and communicating with the local business community, and integration with the marketing efforts of the Vail Local Marketing District (LMD). If a fundamental objective of the CSE is to support ;.events that entice visitors to spend more money in Vail, the CSE needs to more effectively engage the business community in event planning and execution. Secondly, there is still a need for greater integration between the CSE and the LMD-their strategies need to be more concurrent and complementary. As an employee of the WCTB, I have close relationships with countless merchants in the Vail business community. I can be a strong liaison between the CSE and local businesses. In addition, I have worked closely with the Vail Local Marketing District for five years and can help to create greater symmetry between Vail's events and Vail's marketing efforts. I woutd also like to clarify any questions regarding a potential conflict of interest I might have as an employee of the WCTB. The WCTB has not requested any funding from the Town of Vail for events in 2004: Events like Oktoberfest, Vail America Days and the Tree Lighting Ceremony will all be produced privately in 2004. I have lived in the Vail Valley for almost eight years and I have a vested interest in the future of our community. I have extensive event experience and a strong commitment to the success of Vail. Please consider me for a position on the Town of Vail Commission on Special Events. Respectfully, Ian Anderson Director of Communications Val Valley Chamber & Tourism Bureau p ~c~~odr~ ~~T , 4 203 D 100 East Meadow Drive • Suite 34 • Vail CO 81657 p 970-476-1000 • f 970-476-6008 www.visitvailvalley.com --~_._.._ - -- --- _ _- --~----9--~-.------- - Lorelei Donaldson -SEC-board position From: <vail@conciergecervantes.com> To: <Ionaldson@vailgov.com> Date: 10/13/03 7:37:51 AM Subject: SEC-board position Lorelei Page 1 Hello and greetings from Mexico. Box 3003 Vail, CO 81658 970/476-1346 September 30, 2003 Ms. Lorelei Donaldson 75 South Frontage Rd. Vail, CO 81657 Dear Lorelei: Please accept this as my letter of interest to fill one of the vacancies on the Commission for Special `Events. My Special Events background dates back to 1981 when I was the Race Director for the Gunnison Stage Race - a three-day, four events, international bicycle race. Since then I have worked on numerous events large and small. As a freelance independent contractor, I worked on sporting and cultural events. These included events open to the public and private corporate functions. I worked for IMG, the world's largest sports marketing firm, for thirteen years. During that time I managed a variety of sporting events including World TeamTennis, US Pro Skiing, the Rolex Jr. Olympics, F.I.S. World Cup Skiing, gymnastics tours and skating- shows, Closer to home here in Vail, as the director of Fundraising and Public Relations. for Ski Club Vail during the late 80's I managed the Vail Town Race Series. While with IMG, I worked on both World Alpine Ski Championships here in Vail. I was also the executive on site for the Vail Figure Skating Festival from 1994 to 1999. In 2000, I started with the VCBA on a contract basis to run their special events and monitor those being run by others. I have served as an advisory member on the CSE since its inception. As a member of the CSE, my goal will be to make sure that events funded by the Town will bring a return on the investment for the community. The CSE should also provide logistical assistance to all events that come to Vail. To this end, I have pushed for the establishment of a Special Events Network so that all businesses are aware of special: events and the potential that they hold. We must also work closer with other organizations such as the VVCTB and the VCBA to help local businesses leverage the events that do come to Town. Thank you for your time.
