From Vail 20/20:
Housinq: The high cost of housing and a lack of developable land
continue to challenge the community in providing adequate workforce
housing. Opportunities exist to increase the amount of employee housing
through redevelopment of existing housing, the purchase of deed-
restricted units and through developer requirements. During 20/20,
participants placed workforce housing as a top priority for the community
and government leaders to address.
Communitv: Vail's community direction and dive s ty.~ is impacted by
variables such as housing, employment and affoTdability. These variables
~ ~
have caused a decline in the number of ~familiesiving in Vail, while
representation from other demographic sectoE~s suchias- retirees and part-
time homeowners moving to Vail full-tim' e\hs increased,- During 20/20,
participants expressed optimism in~~addressing the man,y challenges
associated with improving community diversity, which urn, will
contribute to a healthier resort.
z Economv: Increasing capital and operational\ expenses for the town, a
sales tax driven municipa;~'~budget, workfo1ce,~hou sing needs and a
seasonal economy impact theAornmunity's long=:term financial health.
During 20/20, participants expressedik, interest in'~creating a year-round

TOWN OF VAIL
STRATEGIC HOUSING PLAN
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of the Town of Vail Strategic Housing Plan is to identify
specific action steps the Town and the community should take in order to
ensure at least 30% of Vail's workforce lives within the Town of Vail.
Additionally, it will be used as a guide for all decisions related to new
development and redevelopment within the Town of Vail in order to ensure
~
the Town's employee housing goal is always being~ach'ie~ved.
The Strategic Housing Plan will also be used ta~gu,ide decision making
regarding employee housing opportunities `th~at mayWresent themselves
outside of the Town of Vail. As the ToMs set a~g al of housing at
least 30% of its workforce within Town;boundaries, it acKnowledges that it

Re: West Unit of 2570 Bald Mountain Road, Variance Application
Dear Mayor and Council:
I am a neighbor of Ed Williams, who has submitted the variance application noted above for
the West Unit of 2570 Bald Mountain Road. When you are considering this application at
your April 1St meeting, please also consider my support of that application. The variance
application was submitted for an additional bay to Ed's garage, increasirrg its capacity from
one car to two cars, and to enclose the breezeway connecting the unit to the existing garage.
During the design process, Ed explained the necessity of the variance because the addition
will encroach into the setback. He made sure that any questions or concerns I had were
addressed. I am satisfied that the expansion of the existing garage will be in keeping with
other expansions which have already been completed in the neighborhood. Many homes
here, including the other half (East Unit) of 2570 Bald Mountain Road, already have two car
garages.
The design ensVres that any visual impact on adjacent properties will be minimal, and I agree
with other neighbors that this will not harm our property interests or constitute a special
privilege for Ed Williams' unit.
Thank you for keeping my support in mind during your consideration of the variance
application.
Respectful ly,
l~

Re: West Unit, 2570 Bald Mountain Road, Variance Application
Dear Mayor and Council:
I know you will be considering the variance application for the West Unit at 2570 Bald Mountain
Road at your April 1, 2008 meeting, and I am writing in support of that application. My
neighbor, Ed Williams, has submitted his variance application in order to add an additional bay
to his garage, expanding it from a one car garage to a two car garage, and to enclose the existing
breezeway which connects the -existing garage to the existing unit. Ed is seeking a variance
because the addition will encroach into the setback.
Ed and his architect Bill Hein met with me during the design process to insure that any questions
or concerns of mine were addressed. Many homes in the neighborhood, including the east side
of the duplex, already have two car garages. The expansion of the existing garage will be in
keeping with the type of expansion which has already been completed on the other half of the
property and in the neighborhood in general, and will not constitute a special privilege for Ed
William's unit.
.
::~e propc~~.ed expansion lias bee. aes'igiied to minimize thc v;suai impact on adjacent properties,
and our pruperty interests would not be harmed in any way by the garage expansion. Therefore,
we hope that you will grant Ed William's variance request.

Re: Variance Application for 2570 Bald Mountain Road, West Unit
Dear Mayor and Council:
In your consideration of the variance application noted above at your April 1 St meeting,
please accept this as my support of this variance for our neighborhood. This application
for the West Unit of 2570 Bald Mountain Road was submitted by my neighbor, Ed
Williams, for expansion from a one car garage to a two car garage and to enclose the
breezeway connecting the existing garage to the existing unit.
While this addition will encroach into the setback, it will be in keeping with the type of
expansion which has been completed in the neighborhood in general and on the other
half of the duplex in particular. Many homes in the neighborhood already have finro car
garages.
Ed addressed any questions I had, and I believe this variance will not constitute any
special privilege for his unit. Our property interests will not be harmed in any way by the
proposed garage expansion, which has been designed to minimize the visual impact on
adjacent properties. I believe this addition will make the property more attractive and,
as such, a benefit to the neighborhood. I appreciate your notice of my support in your
consideration of the variance request.
