The Junior Olympics is one small step in assuring that we can again host the Alpine World Championships in 2015. In the lead-up to that bid, and successful staging, SSCV will work behind the scenes to play a supporting role to ensure its success. All collateral materials encouraged this as well as the SSCV website. Our Race Organizing Committee received a generous sponsorship for this partnership Survey Results Although we did not do a survey. We drove over $60,000 of business to the Manor Vail Lodge in the 10 day period. This accounts for about 10% of our athletes, coaches and families food, beverage and lodging. This is just a snapshot of what potential there was and is to keep this event here. This snapshot of a small part of our event really shows the potential. Next year we will properly survey all athletes, coaches and families involved with the event to gain more knowledge into lodging preferences, food and shopping choices. Potential for Growth There rests plenty of opportunity for sponsorship and marketing development on this event. As we build more infrastructures in our organization and retain staff with expertise in these fields we also grow the potential for expansion of the message common to Town of Vail, Vail Resorts and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. With continued and greater support from small business and the community Vail will move further into the lead as a first choice destination any time of year. The 13 and 14 year olds that come to this event will all return. There is no doubt about it. We catch them at an opportune time when they are impressionable and planning their future. Vail fits into their future. Sense of Community When 10% of the competitive field is from the “home team” there is a great sense of community about this event. SSCV has consistently trained and raised some of the best athletes in the world. The Junior Olympics is a proving ground for that and when it comes to town the community is interested. There are not too many people you could ask in town that have not heard of or shown some interest in this event. In light of this year’s event following so closely on the heels of the Olympics the message of “it takes a community to raise a child” is as strong as ever. When the Gold Peak Competition Arena is decorated like a NASCAR race and 200 kids are strutting their stuff in the parades, while competing or just shopping in town…people notice how nice they are, disciplined and possessing that certain joie de vivre that you see amongst all great athletes. Green Event With our transition from moving our “Headquarters” to Manor Vail Lodge and not using a caterer in our tent, we were able to save on over 200 place settings of disposable plates, cups, cutlery and bottles. This is the first step in reducing our “footprint” but with over 250 people being served 2 and sometimes 3 meals for 5-7 days this is a significant step. We look forward to working in more ways to reduce the impact we have on the environment. Submitted by Nigel Cooper ncooper@skiclubvail.org 970.790.5133
