Award for 2009 Sustainable Special Event (Vail)— The Teva Mountain Games, a project of the Vail Valley Foundation, is being honored by the Town of Vail with the first-ever Sustainable Special Event Award for outstanding efforts to host an environmentally conscious event. The award was earned during the 2009 Teva Games and will be presented to event organizers during opening ceremonies for the 2010 games at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (June 3) at Checkpoint Charlie. Presenting the award on behalf of the town will be Andy Daly, a member of the Vail Town Council. The town’s new “Celebrate Green!” program requires all event producers to complete a points-based checklist to ensure compliance with a minimum number of sustainable practices and additional points are awarded to those who go above and beyond to reduce waste, encourage public transportation and reduce their carbon footprint. The award includes a reduction up to $250 in Town of Vail permitting fees as well as signs announcing the achievement. The recognition will be given annually to events that exceed the minimum Celebrate Green! requirements by the greatest margin and that imaginatively showcase the event as a model of environmental awareness and sustainability. The Teva Mountain Games dedicated a section of its 2009 event to environmental awareness and was called the Green Light District, according to Adam Lueck of the Vail Valley Foundation. “The Green Light District was an effort to educate ourselves, athletes and spectators about how we can all collectively do our part in minimizing our environmental impact by showcasing environmentally friendly products, services and ideas,” he said. In addition, the Teva Games minimized waste by offering compostable serving material, recycling, encouraging biking to and from the event, eliminating plastic bag and Styrofoam use, using environmentally conscious vendors and ensured that any dirt removed for their slopestyle course was reused by Vail Resorts in construction projects. The Town of Vail and the Commission on Special Events thank all of the event producers for helping to do their part to preserve Vail’s environment.
