HomeMy WebLinkAboutVFF 2010 Strengths and Weaknesses An overview outlining the event’s strengths and weaknesses: specifically, what went well and what measures could be taken to improve the event STRENGTHS -Strong industry awareness. Filmmakers, studios, and film press know of and think highly of the Vail Film Festival and those that have attended in the past continue to speak well of their experience. -Logistics and traffic flow was good. Attendees were managed well by festival staff and able to enter and exit the screening and party venues easily. -Good volunteer base. The festival was successful at marketing to volunteers and recruiting enough volunteers to fulfill all volunteer needs. -The festival surpassed previous years in terms of number of film submissions, and was able to put together the largest film program, screening over 90 films. -Celebrity attendance was strong, with high level award recipients in attendance, including actor Jane Seymour and actor/director Zach Braff. -Filmmaker travel and coordination was well executed, with all attending filmmakers able to make their question and answer sessions, film screenings, and events. -The festival was able to achieve many strong local partnerships, including hotel partnerships to help with the accommodation of attending filmmakers, as well as restaurant partnerships for reception and attendee needs. -Marketing was strong, with numerous marketing partnerships including the Vail Daily, NRC Broadcasting, PlumTV, TV8, VailPM, This Week in Denver, 5280 magazine, and Comcast. -The festival was successful at securing several major sponsorships, including Zacapa, Stella Artois, Audi, and Lufthansa. -We increased our signage at the venues and at will call locations, and felt that attendees were better able to navigate the event. WEAKNESSES -We need more marketing in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is the center of the film industry and there are many opportunities to bring in attendees from L.A. who are passionate about film. This will be a primary focus area moving into the 2011 Vail Film Festival. We will establish partnerships with media and film related organizations in Los Angeles, as well as more industry publications. We will also host several Vail Film Festival events in Los Angeles which will serve to promote the film festival, and give added value to film festival sponsors. -The festival needs to work on securing more supporting sponsors. Although we were successful at securing several major sponsors, there is an opportunity to secure far more supporting, and lower level sponsors. We will broaden our efforts to include more regional and local companies in order to grow our supporting sponsor base. This will bring in more revenue, and create more awareness in the regional and local community. -Earlier submissions deadlines and film program and schedule. We have received feedback year after year requesting that we have our film program information available earlier. This has not been possible due to the timing of our film submissions. To address this problem, we are making the submissions date earlier, and will therefore be able to publicize our film program several weeks earlier than usual.
