The Vail Village parking garage is the closest park- ing structure to the CineBistro Theater and Sebastian Hotel screening venues. When you walk out of the Vail parking structure, take a right and walk one minute, the CineBistro Theater will be on your right. Walk about two minutes past the CineBistro Theater and the Sebastian Hotel will be on your right. The Vail Village and Lionshead parking structures have daily rates until 3pm. Parking after 3pm is free. The Solaris complex, where CineBistro is located, also has available paid parking. However, certain venues may sell out. For this reason, attendees are advised to arrive at screenings early. The Vail Film Festival does not guaran- tee seating and does not offer refunds. Patrons and Passholders are advised to arrive at the theater at least 20 minutes prior to showtime to receive priority admission. Fifteen (15) minutes before showtime, if unoccupied seats remain, individual tickets will be sold at the box office on a first-come, first-seated basis. Festival Passes may be claimed at the Vail Film Festival Will Call Booth. 11 2011 TRIBUTE AWARDS // EXCELLENCE IN ACTING AWARD: Kate Bosworth Kate Bosworth is one of today’s leading ladies. Most recognized for Blue Crush, Bosworth starred in Wonderland, opposite Val Kilmer, and received rave reviews for Superman Returns and Kevin Spacey’s Beyond the Sea. She recently starred in The Warriors Way with Geoffrey Rush and Another Happy Day with Demi Moore, as well as Little Birds, Straw Dogs and BFF and Baby. Other credits include The Girl in the Park with Sigourney Weaver, 21, and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton, opposite Topher Grace and Josh Duhamel. 12 RENEGADE AWARD FOR RISK-TAKING IN FILM: Michael Imperioli Michael Imperioli is an acclaimed actor, writer and producer in TV and film. He currently stars in ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7 and starred in Foreclosure and Life on Mars. Imperioli is best known as Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos, earning a Best Supporting Actor Emmy®, five Emmy nominations, and numerous Golden Globe and SAG nominations. He wrote and directed The Hungry Ghosts, wrote episodes of The Sopranos, adapted Mario Puzo’s Omerta, and wrote and exec-produced Summer of Sam. He also starred in Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones with Rachel Weiz and Mark Wahlberg. In more than 30 film roles, Imperioli has worked with Spike Lee, the Hughes Brothers and Nancy Savoca. The Inner Room Director/Writer: Jack Gastelbondo (USA, 2011, 82min) Cast: Jessica Duffy, Marty Lindsey, David Dalton, Kristin Keating A couple visits a remote cabin to work on their relationship following a tragic event. While visiting the cabin, Julianne becomes disturbed with horrific visions, calling her sanity into question. Soon she realizes her life may be in danger with no one left to trust. In the end, she must decide whether to let go or to follow her obsession. The only thing to come between a groom and his bride is a family of misfits and the love of his life. 16 Colorado Film DOCUMENTARIES // A Perfect Soldier Director: John Severson; Screenwriter: Clara Lehmann (Cambodia, USA, 2010, 56min) Cast: Cast: Aki Ra A Perfect Soldier is a film about the power of the individual to create change in society. We follow the story of a former child soldier, Aki Ra, who, as a very young child of 6 was drafted into the Khmer Rouge and planted hundreds of landmines for them. We learn how these difficult experiences affected him and how he has devoted his life to chang- ing his country’s circumstance ever since. Starting from humble beginnings and now as an international symbol of one mans purpose to eradicate landmines, Aki-Ra’s Cambodian Land Mine museum has changed the lives of tens of thousands of people who visit each year. Certain Proof: A Question of Worth Director: Ray Ellis (USA, 2011, 59min) Kayla, Josh and Colin, three children with severe communication and physical dis- abilities, struggle in the school system to prove what they understand. Facing relent- less barriers to a meaningful education, their mothers fight to give them a voice. Between the question of worth and the quality of their future, three young lives hang in the balance. 18 WorldNorth AmericanColoradoFilmmakers in Attendance DOCUMENTARIES // Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean Director: Curt Fissel; Screenwriter: Ellen Friedland (USA, Uganda, 2010, 40min) Cast: Ed O’Neil Living in the wake of the Idi Amin reign of terror and institutional discrimination, one Ugandan coffee farmer organized a group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish neighbors to challenge historical, as well as economic and environmental, hurdles by forming Delicious Peace Coffee Cooperative to enhance peaceful relationships and economic develop- ment. Partnering with a Fair Trade US distributor, the standard of living of the farmers is improving, peace is flourishing, and their messages of peace and fair wages are spreading to coffee customers in the US. Narrated by Ed O’Neill. Echoes of a Storyteller Director: Daniel Turcan (USA, Kyrgyzstan, 2010, 82min) This documentary looks into the tradition of oral storytelling in Kyrgyzstan through the eyes of two main characters--a revered elder and his teenage student. The film explores Soviet and Islamic influence on the Kyrgyz people, whose epic poem Ma- nas has been transmitted orally for over a thousand years. The revered elder, now a national celebrity, recalls fighting in the Soviet army. His student knows nothing of Soviet life; he prays to Allah and records his friend’s band with a cell phone camera. These two characters and their relationship to one another gives an honest and personal context to a Central Asian tradition unlike any other in the world. 19 DOCUMENTARIES // Hauling Director/Screenwriter: Sean Walsh (Brazil, 2010, 91min) Cast: Claudines Alvarenga and his family as themselves. Often regarded as a marginal society, the recycling underworld of Sao Paulo - Brazil’s largest metropolis - is the backdrop to the touching story of Claudines and his family. Hauling reveals the day-to-day life of this man, a father to over 27 children, and of many others who make their living out of collecting and recy- cling material that others have thrown out. Lens & Pens: Art in an Unexpected Place Director/Screenwriter: Deborah J. Schull (USA, 2009, 27min) The film tells the story of a transformational poetry, painting, and photography workshop for criminally insane patients held under maximum security at Washing- ton, DC’s historic St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. While some will spend their entire lives at ‘St. E’s,’ others, like Ronnie Crooks (painter) and Pam Thomas (poet), have left the hospital for the greater community and will continue to develop themselves and their art--if they can ‘just keep it together.’ The film features Ronnie, Pam, and Kevin (photographer), three participants whose lives are profoundly changed by the workshop; it’s founder, social worker Ed Washington; it’s three volunteer-teachers; and the patient- participants’ surprising poetry, painting, and photography. 20 DOCUMENTARIES // Loy Krathong Director: Jeffrey Waldron (Thailand, 2010, 7min) Each year the people of Chiang Mai, Thailand get together to let go. The many origins and meanings of the Loy Krathong lantern festival are explored as a tuk- tuk driver explores it’s meaning for her. 21 Saving Pelican 895 Director: Irene Taylor Brodsky (USA, 2011, 39min) Nearly 9,000 birds were found in the oily waters of the Gulf Coast in the wake of the 2010 BP oil spill. One of them was a young pelican coated by oil near his nest in Louisiana. Saving Pelican 895 is the story of the 895th bird to be rescued and rehabilitated by a dedicated team of wildlife experts and every day people, many of whom travel the world responding to oil disasters. The tale of a single animal and the compassionate people deployed to save him, Saving Pelican 895 shows how the process of saving one life restored a degree of humanity for the rest of us. DOCUMENTARIES // The Clean Bin Project Director: Grant Baldwin (Canada, 2010, 76min) Cast: Subjects: Jen Rustemeyer, Grant Baldwin, Chris Jordan, Captain Charles Moore, Brian Burke The Clean Bin Project is about a regular couple and their quest to answer the ques- tion ‘is it possible to live completely waste free?’ Partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a comedic battle to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least amount of garbage in an entire year. Their light-hearted competition is set against a compelling examination of the sobering problem of waste in our ‘throw-away’ society. Featuring interviews with renowned artist and TED lecturer, Chris Jordan and marine pollution expert, Captain Charles Moore, The Clean Bin Project presents the serious topic of waste reduction with optimism, humor, and inspiration for individual action. We Still Live Here: As Nutayunean Director/Screenwriter: Anne Makepeace (USA, 2010, 56min) We Still Live Here: As Nutayunean tells the amazing story of the return of the Wampanoag language. The first time a language with no Native speakers has been revived in this country. Four centuries ago, Wampanoag people helped the first English settlers in America (the Pilgrims) to survive. Although Americans celebrate ‘the Indians’ every year at Thanksgiving, few know that their descendants are still on their homelands in Southeastern Massachusetts. Spurred on by an indomitable linguist named Jessie Little Doe, the Wampano- ag are bringing their language and their culture back. 22 ADVENTURE FILMS // Downhill: The Bill Johnson Story Director: Zeke Piestrup (USA, 2010, 76min) A down-and-out Olympic champion makes a comeback at 40-years-old to win back the family he has lost. Calhoun discovers an innate talent for ski racing, earning a coveted chance to represent his country again -- as an athlete on the 2010 Paralympic ski team. With gold in the balance, Calhoun commits everything to the challenge. Twiga Stars: Tanzania’s Soccer Sisters Director: Nisha Ligon (Tanzania, 2010, 61min) Follow a year in the life of the Twiga Stars, Tanzania’s national women’s football team, as they come together for their biggest competition ever. Through the gruel of intensive practices, the heartbreak of team cuts, and the tragedies of life that strike along the way... the girls support each other and work together to achieve what no one could have imagined.
