Mission Statement The Love Hope Strength Foundation is an international, music-centric charity dedicated to saving the lives of people with cancer one concert at a time. LHS was founded in 2007 by leukemia survivors Mike Peters (of the Welsh rock band The Alarm) and James Chippendale (president of Doodson Insurance). As the world’s leading rock-and-roll cancer foundation, LHS primarily raises its funds through musical pilgrimages to majestic sites like Mt. Everest, Mt. Fuji and Machu Picchu. Rather than funding cancer research, LHS focuses on building and supporting cancer centers around the world, boosting awareness of global cancer needs, and expanding international bone marrow databases. One of LHS’s many accomplishments includes purchasing Nepal’s first mammography and internal radiation machines and funding the construction of the first children’s cancer center in Tanzania. Through its partnership with DKMS (the world’s largest marrow registry), LHS also frequently heads up bone marrow drives at concerts and major musical events like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and Austin City Limits. With more than 400 drives conducted, LHS has added over 18,000 people to the national marrow database and found over 250 matches for patients in need of bone marrow transplants. 8. Brief description of the event and its activities: Colorado Rocks will serve as a major summer fundraiser for The Love Hope Strength Foundation. Musicians, cancer survivors, and supporters from all over the United States will gather to hike Vail Mountain and conduct performances all along the trail. Renowned musicians that will be leading the musical trek include Brett Dennen, G. Love and Cy Curnin of The Fixx, along with many other extraordinarily talented and popular musicians. After the hike, LHS will sponsor a free concert open to the public in Solaris with The School of Rock with special performances by Brett Dennen, G.Love and The Fixx. 2. Where will the event be located within the Town of Vail? The event will take place along Vail Mountain, with the major performance being held at Solaris. 3. Will any portion of the event take place outside of the Town of Vail? If yes, please explain. No 4. Will additional in-kind services be required from the Town of Vail? If yes, please explain, including a description of anticipated impacts on Town of Vail services: i.e. bus service, parking, traffic control, street closures, police services, etc. (The event promoter will be charged for all labor, materials and equipment unless such services are specifically exempted and approved as part of the Special Event Permit.). In order for the concert in Solaris to run smoothly, LHS will look for support from the town of Vail for: • Roping off the area to control alcohol which is sold on site • Security • Mobile bars • Staging and tenting • Public restrooms • Hanging of banners 5. Is this a new or existing event? If existing, please describe the location(s) of the event in previous years and the number of years it has been produced. This is an existing an event. In the past it was called Pikes Peak Rocks and was hosted in Colorado Springs. Past performances were Michael and Kevin Bacon (The Bacon Brothers), Dashboard Confessional, White Buffalo, John Common, The Fixx and more. The event was limited in size due to national park regulations and limited lodging in the area. Love Hope Strength wishes to move this to Vail to be able to expand the event into the flagship US event for the foundation for years to come. Similar global events include concerts and hikes on Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji, Machu Pichu and more. Vail will become the ‘home’ of the US hike. 6. People: • Number of participants (athletes, artists, exhibitors, etc.) anticipated: In the past this event had 200 participants. We expect, based upon the popularity and ease of access to Vail, that attendance will easily grow to 400 in year 1 with a goal of 1,000 in coming years. • Number of volunteers needed: 30 (LHS can provide from Denver based group of volunteers but prefer to pull from local resources to involve the community) • Number of event staff: 3 • Total Number of spectators/attendees anticipated and estimate: Based upon past percentages of Pikes Peaks Rocks 2010 attendees: 2% were local to Colorado 70% In-state in Denver 28% Out of State (primarily Dallas, New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles) 7. Brief description of potential benefits to the Town of Vail, including an estimated # of incremental room nights and increased spending generated We are estimating that Colorado Rocks will attract over 400 music and outdoor enthusiast to the town of Vail. Majority of our attendees from previous years were business and philanthropic professionals from the Denver area. Our estimated average annual income for past attendees was around $60,000-150,000. This year we expect our past participants from Denver and out of state to grow due to the popularity of Vail. Based upon former years we would be looking at a minimum of 200 non-Vail resident participants. With the addition of Denver based media partners we hope this number to be far higher. 8. What return on investment should the Town of Vail expect? Estimated $150,000 BUDGET: 1. Please attach a complete and detailed event budget, including anticipated revenues and expenses. 2. What % of the total event budget is the CSE being asked to fund? 3. Describe briefly how you will use the funds that you are requesting from the CSE. Special Event permit: $50 Sound Permit: $50 Staging: $250 Security: $250 Barricades: $200 Sound, Lighting, Backline: $5,000 Meal on hike for participants: $2,000 Artist production team lodging: $10,000 Artist travel: $4,000 Radio (KBCO) & Print (Backpacker magazine & Westword) Promotion: $6,000 Photographer: $1,000 Web Design: $700 Printing/Marketing Materials: $500 Total: $30,000* *$30,000 donation would place Vail as the Title Sponsor of Colorado Rocks and would give Vail Title Sponsor naming rights. Thus, Love Hope Strength would consider rebranding the event as “Vail Rocks”, rather than “Colorado Rocks”. A 3-year commitment would be required to do so and the decision would need to be made prior to the May 16 launch date. 4. Should the CSE decide not to support this event, will it still occur? Yes 5. What is the $ amount of sponsorships from alternative sources reflected in the event budget? TBD 6. What % of the total event budget do you expect the event itself to generate? (i.e. ticket sales, merchandise, food and alcohol sales, etc.) The estimated total budget is $45,220, estimated gross revenue is $125,600 7. If possible, would you intend to host the event in Vail beyond 2012? If yes, for how many years beyond 2012? Love Hope Strength is excited to call the town of Vail home to our annual Colorado Rocks event. 8. Do you anticipate requesting funding from the CSE next year? If yes, given that the CSE encourages the development of additional sponsors in order to leverage their own investments, and anticipates that as events become established they will become less reliant on public funds, what %, if any, of the total event budget do you anticipate requesting next year? Yes, if we were given a 3-year guarantee we would give Vail naming rights to the event and call it “Vail Rocks”. Love Hope Strength will continue to provide Vail with top name artists to participate and perform along the hike each year and perform a free concert, annually, with the School of Rock and special guest performances.
