HomeMy WebLinkAboutCSE Town of Vail Nov 4th meeting TAC 2012 ALL DOCS  November 2, 2012                                 CSE Town of Vail                  The America Cup ‐ Vail 2012  Thank you for your time today.  I have been busy creating a way for my event to become more  sustainable and rely less on Town of Vail funding.  To accomplish this I have dissolved the  operating entity from this past year and have created a new nonprofit company that will  provide a better vehicle for event fund raising, while generating a charitable amount for our  chosen recipient for 2012 – Project Healing Waters.  All the legal and accounting work is being  provided to The America Cup – pro bono ‐ by Sandler, Reiff, Young & Lamb, a Washington, D.C.  law firm concentrating in the formation and operation of non‐profit organizations, campaign  finance, election and political law and government ethics and the regulation of lobbying.    I am submitting revised documents today:               Page 1 TOV CSE event information – funding request adjustment to $7,500   New company entity operating the event ‐  America Cup, Inc   Nonprofit Articles of Incorporation  501c3 | Note – IRS form 1023 has been submitted   Nonprofit EIN number 45‐3694925   Budget sheet revised and Spending Forecast revised   Note – all documents have been submitted to Sybill Navas    Funding Request – The America Cup would like to revise the prior requested amount of  $10,000 to $7,500.  This amount would have the Town of Vail funding 14% of the budget, which  has also been revised to $51,000.  The event goal is to raise $5,000 for Project Healing Waters  and to submit this check at the awards banquet.  Funding increase is requested due to higher  than anticipated costs of services in Vail.  Donations will be targeted to offset operational and  charitable goals.  Forecast for attendee spending is $115,000.    Mission Statement ‐ "To promote amateur competitive fly fishing in the US, while supporting  Project Healing Waters and like organizations though charitable contributions, fly fishing clinics,  and education.”    The America Cup will provide services to Project Healing Waters, Colorado Division of Wildlife  and area schools and organizations by way of free fly fishing instruction and guiding services,  while promoting amateur competitive fly fishing and raising awareness for Project Healing  Waters and like charities.    Jodi and I have personally guided for Project Healing Waters soldiers for the past 4 years and  have seen the strength and determination in these men and women.  This is a project we hold  close to our hearts and we look forward to helping this organization.  The America Cup will  work directly with the Rocky Mountain Regional director and Fort Carson.          Timing of event – The America Cup Vail 2012 will be September 20‐23, 2012  The 2012 World Championships will be in June in Slovenia  The European Nationals will be held in Portugal in May  The timing of these events is paramount for The America Cup to get more foreign teams to  attend.  Already, I have verbal commitments from Canada, Japan, Ireland, Poland, and  Australia.  3 youth teams have verbally committed as well as several US based teams.  I am  certain I can fill the 16 team roster for 2012.    Exposure in Town ‐ I would really like to see a banner placement for the event in 2012.  I did  not have that chance last year and this would be an asset to my attendees to see the event  name bannered in Vail.  I hope the week of my event can allow for such exposure in 2012.    The 2011 event was a huge success for both the Town of Vail and all the attendees.  I hope  that the CSE will see the benefit of having the event on September 20th and see the efforts  being made by the event committee to both fiscally and strategically set this event up for future  success.  Thank you – John Knight  Below is information on Project Healing Waters:     Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.SM Program  While initially focusing on the military personnel in the Washington, DC area, the Project has expanded nationwide  and is offering its services and program to wounded active military personnel and disabled veterans in Department  of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals throughout the country.  The Project’s program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying and rod building classes, along with clinics for  wounded and injured personnel ranging from beginners to those with prior fly fishing and tying experience who  are adapting their skills to their new abilities. All fly fishing and tying equipment is provided to the participants at  no cost. Fishing trips, both one day and multi‐day are also provided at no cost to the participants.  Project Healing Waters is unique in that our volunteers are teaching classes on an on‐going, long term basis.  It is  much more than a one day fishing trip.  For many participants, particularly disabled veterans, the socialization and  camaraderie of the classes are just as important as the fishing outings, and provide them a new activity.  The Project relies on Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, and independent fly fishing clubs to conduct the  program at the DOD and DVA hospitals across the nation. The volunteer staff and outings leaders include  experienced fly fishers and guides, all of whom donate their time and knowledge to support the Project  participants.  In order to have a viable Project Healing Waters program, three groups must co‐exist: a fly fishing  club willing to provide the volunteers and organize the program, a DOD or DVA hospital willing to host the  program, and wounded or disabled soldiers or veterans willing to participate.  Because each of these groups is  unique, no two Project Healing Waters programs will be exactly the same.  Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.SM   Mission Statement and 501(c)(3)  The mission of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing is to assist in the physical and emotional rehabilitation of  disabled active duty military personnel and veterans through fly fishing and fly tying education and outings.  Project Healing Waters is a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization incorporated in the State of Maryland. PHWFF is  dependent on tax‐deductible donations and the help of numerous volunteers to meet the educational, equipment,  transportation, and related needs of the participants. NOTICE. WE ASSIGNED YOU AN EMPLOYER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER Thank you for applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN). We assigned you EIN 45-3694925. This EIN will identify you, your business accounts, tax returns, and documents, even if you have no employees. Please keep this notice in your permanent records. When filing tax documents, payments, and related correspondence, it is very important that you use your EIN and complete name and address exactly as shown above. Any variation may cause a delay in processing, result in incorrect information in your account, or even cause you to be assigned more than one EIN. If the information is not correct as shown above, please make the correction using the attached tear off stub and return it to us. Assigning an EIN does not grant tax-exempt status to non-profit organizations. Publication 557, Tax Exempt Status for Your Organization, has details on the application process, as well as information on returns you may need to file. To apply for formal recognition of tax-exempt status, most organizations will need to complete either Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or Form 1024, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(a). Submit the completed form, all applicable attachments, and the required user fee to: Internal Revenue Service PO Box 12192 Covington, KY 41012-0192 The Pension Protection Act of 2006 contains numerous changes to the tax law provisions affecting tax-exempt organizations, including an annual electronic notification requirement (Form 990-N) for organizations not required to file an annual information return (Form 990 or Form 990-EZ). Additionally, if you are required to file an annual information return, you may be required to file it electronically. Please refer to the Charities & Non-Profits page at www.irs.gov for the most current information on your filing requirements and on provisions of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 that may affect you.
