(Scott Willoughby, The Denver Post ) VAIL — Whatever your opinion may be of competitive fly-fishing, there's no arguing the math. Like most contests, the America Cup International Fly Fishing Tournament that passed through Eagle and Summit counties last weekend was all about putting numbers on the scoreboard. But this trout fishing contest put up numbers unlike any ever imagined in Colorado. "We ended up with a total fish count for three days of 2,189 scored fish, meaning at least 20 centimeters, or 8 inches, or more. On Friday alone, the fish count was 1,122," said tournament producer John Knight of Minturn. "It's really an anomaly to see these guys pound this water like this. I've never seen fish numbers like this, and I've competed for years." About 70 competitors from as far as Ireland and Japan took part in the fourth annual event that landed in Vail for the first time and showcased the Colorado and Blue rivers along with Sylvan Lake near Eagle and Nottingham Lake in Avon. Using the rigid FIPS-Mouche rules of international competition, the anglers were forbidden from using split shot or strike indicators, yet plucked fish from the water like magicians pulling rabbits from a hat, over and over and over again. "There's tricks to everything," said Rob Kolanda of Littleton, the individual tournament champion and member of winning Team Emerger. "In fly-fishing, everything is 'match the hatch.' But the secret is good presentation. This is about triggering fish, when there isn't necessarily a hatch there to match. It's about triggers within the flies that you are using and the aspects of the fly that catches the fish's attention — is it a bead, is it a particular color, size and shape? It all figures in." Kolanda, who also competes for Fly Fishing Team USA, understands that not all anglers will look at his feat with admiration. He's heard the peanut gallery commentary that there's no place in the fly-fishing world for competition, that catching trout under such demanding circumstances somehow cheapens the experience. And he's OK with it. After 16 years managing a fly shop, the current equipment sales rep who began competing five years ago respectfully disagrees, noting that it's not only good for business, it's good for the sport.   The America Cup International Fly Fishing Tournament  www.theamericacup.com  "This is really about the mechanics of the sport. It's a separate side of it," Kolanda said. "It's not for everybody. I'm not going to tell everybody that it's good for you or you should try to fish this way. But at the same time, even if you're a guy that likes to do suspension fishing with an indicator and split shot, if you're able to look at a different aspect of the sport and are able to understand how other people are catching fish, it will probably make you a better indicator fisherman. "So, as a student of the sport, there are things that you take and learn from." Despite the prevailing notion that many of the fly-fishermen in Vail last weekend can be considered among the best in the world, the most common characteristic shared between them is a willingness to learn. Competing in teams of five, anglers from overseas opened their fly boxes and traded techniques with local fishermen in a real-time information exchange to put the blogosphere to shame. "Of course, you experiment, but you rely on your teammates as well," said Todd Oishi of Vancouver, who joined fishermen from Ireland, Poland, Italy and Colorado on Team Emerger. "That's why this is a team sport more than an individual sport. If the team does well, then the individual does well. But if you go at it the other way, when an individual just does well on his own, it's a recipe for failure." Despite the presence of the top individual angler, the international composition of Team Emerger dispelled any notion of home-field advantage in the event. The tournament's second-place team traveled from Wyoming, while the third-place team out of 16 was a group of Front Range fishermen calling themselves Team Caddis. "The sport is really evolving right now, so the advantages are getting slimmer and slimmer for any team. That whole 'home field' thing is really minor," said Chris Galvin, who was joined on Team Caddis by Dzifa Glymin, Riley Cotter, Jeremy Sides and Ben Metcalf. "It's like going to play tennis in France. The food is a little different, people talk funny, but it's still tennis and eventually you figure it out. Only in this case, it's fishing."
