Since I won’t be at the meeting, I thought it would be helpful to send you all the highlights from yesterday’s discussion on Council Contributions for 2012. Sybill can provide hard copies of the documents for you at the meeting for your review. The next reading of the budget is October 4. Skating Club of Vail – funded 5 days of ice – request was for 9 – July and Dec 2012 – additional 4 days will be awarded if ice is not booked 15. Special Olympics Parking vouchers – funded at full request of 42 16. Vail Sports Commission – requested $47,500 – staff recommended not funding – Council agreed an suggested this request go to VLMD/VVP to see if it would enhance the effort to recruit participatory sports. Side discussion included the Council’s concern that special event funding from the general fund is not a sustainable option long-term, particularly with these large iconic events that are happening over several years (Cycling, 2015s, etc.). Susie relayed that a subcommittee, Arts Culture and Entertainment (ACE,) is being formed to research and recommend a permanent funding mechanism for special events. There was also the acknowledgement that VLMD is earmarking $100k for USA Pro Cycling Challenge and $100k to recruit and market an iconic special event – currently looking at a possible music festival in September targeted to 25 – 50 year olds with rock/pop/country music. Some Council members felt that events needed to wean themselves off public funding as they grow and look to more sponsorships instead. Sorry for the long email. Don’t hesitate to call me if you’d like to discuss. Let me know how I can help in the upcoming process! file:///M|/Highlights from Council Contribution discussion yesterday.htm[9/21/2011 10:19:08 AM] Many thanks, Kelli Kelli McDonald Economic Development Manager Office of Economic Development 970.479.2454 direct 970.479.2157 fax kmcdonald@vailgov.com vailgov.com twitter.com/vailgov
