HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012 40th Annual Vail King of the Mountain Open Recap 40 th Annual Vail King of the Mountain Open Post -Event Recap: This year’s Event drew 555 total teams to the Vail area – a 15% increase in participation from 2011; with, fully, 1/3 of the participants being “family oriented”: i.e. families coming to V ail for the entire weekend celebrating Father’s Day (90 juniors teams; 100 special Father/Son & Father/Daughter teams competed – many of the juniors also attended the FREE clinic on Friday afternoon.) It is estimated that 2,500 people (give -or -take) atten ded this Event. Out of those, 100% came because of the Event. Most of the participants, and attendees are from all over the Rocky Mountain Region; with a few teams traveling from outside of the RMR region. Approximately 86% of the participants had atten ded the Event prior to 2012. Lodging: participants were directed to lodging via the “Preferred Housing Representatives” listed on the Event website. The Visit Vail Valley website was listed as well. Marketing: the Event is promoted by various methods: direct mail; direct e -mail blasts; Facebook postings; national magazine advertisements; promotions at various volleyball sports complexes within the Rocky Mountain Region; and local and regional radio and newspaper spots and ads. Sponsorship: there is more of a “buzz” about the Event within beach volleyball circles due both to the national advertising and articles; as well as the “numbers” that were put up in participation (the Event is, now, the second largest beach doubles volleyball tournament in Nor th America). As such, hopefully, sponsors will take a second look at being involved with the Event. “Green”: the Event itself is, inherently, a low -impact tourney upon the environs where the Event is held. As well, the organizers train and supervise their crews and exhibiting sponsors in recycling and utilizing recycled paper in their information sheets, et al. The food and beverage concessionaire is well -educated regarding the “greening” of the Event. Community Involvement: the retail and restaurant community of Vail is very nicely involved in donating gift certificates, and hard goods, towards the “prize pool” for the finishers of each division of play. As well, the VRD grounds crew and the Public Works people involved are very proud of how they pr esent Vail’s athletic fields and parks towards our participants. A survey was undertaken as to the spending habits, lodging preferences, participants age ranges, income levels, etc. However, that report won’t be ready until later in the year. 2012 EVENT PROFIT & LOSS STATEMENT INCOME: Sponsorships & Donations: Town of Vail : $ 4,000.00 Corpora t e Sponsors: 3,500.00 Team Registration Fees: 36,215.00 Total Income: $43,715.00 EXPENSES : Administrati ve Salaries: Producer: 10,000.00 Assistant/Secretarial: 900.00 Cost of Sponsorship Sales: $ 700 .00 (commissions ) Marketing/Promotions: Artwork: 840.00 Poster Production: 132.28 Poster Distribution: 150.00 Direct Mail: 1,070.54 Radio: 250.00 Web Site Re -Design: 405.00 Office Expenses: (rent/utilities/phone/supplies/internet service, etc.): 5,314.91 Lic enses/Fees: Event Insurance: 614.00 Town of Vail Permits: 225.00 Field(s) Rental: 3,550.00 Bank Fees: 14.50 Retail Sales Tax: ??
