They are often the launching pad for future U.S. Ski Team stars. Organized by local USSA clubs, the Marriott Junior Championships, now in their 35 th season, are recognized by the USSA and the U.S. Olympic Committee. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) hosted the 2012 series for J3 alpine racers from the Rocky/Central region. 165 athletes age 13-14 competed in slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom and dowhnill races in Vail the week of March 3-10, 2012. The 2012 Marriott J3 Junior Championships was a tremendous success on so many levels; athletes earned the chance to compete at the highest level possible for their age while creating life-long memories; numerous family and fans gathered in Vail to share in this special event; and SSCV played host to an event that has set the bar for similar junior championship races. The event committee’s goal was to create an event that made each and every participant feel special and they achieved their goal, as evident by one mother’s email, “My daughter qualified by winning The Council Cup. While we were all very proud of that accomplishment it left her feeling a little like a second hand citizen, as if she didn’t really belong at event. When we went to register her and she told the woman that she was the winner of The Council Cup the room exploded in applause and cheering.  It still makes me emotional! Here was this kid who, in her mind, had cheated the system but was greeted to a hero’s welcome. I truly feel tha t it was a life changing moment for my daughter. I will always be grateful to those women who gave her that gift. Your hard work, dedication and commitment to The J3 Junior Championships has changed so many young lives. Thank you from my entire family.” With many family members traveling from around the region to attend the races, this event was an excellent avenue for SSCV, the Town of Vail, and Vail Resorts to demonstrate Vail’s “Sense of Community”. It was evident to visiting teams that being a part of SSCV isn’t just about being a part of the ski club but rather being a part of the community. When local leaders such as Alpine Ban k’s President Glenn Davis, Vail Mayor Pro-tem Ludwig Kurz , and SSCV Alumnus and Vail business owner David Viele took time to make appearances at various events, it was clear that our valley’s youth is important to our community. It was also exciting to sho wcase various landmarks around Vail by moving the locations of each awards ceremony. If a family member could not attend the race, they had the chance to view it online though SSCV’s first ever use of live video streaming on the event website. The addition of the website was a huge step for the event. It created a hub for participants, family members, and coaches to gather information. In this, and all other SSCV hosted events, we make great efforts to conserve all resources possible while being conscientious of the environment. The website eliminated the need to print off the lengthy registration and info packets that had been distributed at past events. We could not have made this event a success without your support, thank you for sponsoring Ski & Snowboard Club Vail and the 2012 Marriott J3 Junior Championships! The volunteer ROC (race organizing committee) spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours preparing for the event and additional volunteers put in another few hundred hours during the actual event. The ROC only had 3 paid SSCV employees so needless to say, this event was only possible because of the incredible volunteer support from parents and friends. Thanks to all of the volunteer support and the amazing sponsorships from local companies, SSCV was able to profit from the event. Revenue in excess of operating expenses benefit SSCV’s Annual Fund. The Annual Fund Campaign is SSCV’s most important fundraising endeavor each year. Athletes’ program fees only cover 65% of SSCV’s true costs, thus fundraising is integral to continued success. In addition to raising money for SSCV, the race series brought in substantial revenue for the local community. Over $43K was spent at Vail businesses to run the event. Additional spending was generated by event participants and their families though lodging, dining, and shopping. J3 Junior Championships Budget: • Revenue = $103,055.00 • Expenses = $79,542.49 • Local Spending = $43,874.44+ • Chartable Outcome = $21,149.51 7 M OVING F ORWARD SSCV will host the 2013 J3 Marriott Junior Championships and the ROC is already working on next year’s event. While this year’s event was a success on so many levels, the ROC continues to look for ways to make the event special from year to year. It is important not to create a cookie-cutter event that athletes come to expect but rather a one-of-a-kind series each year. Specifically, the ROC will look for alternatives to the Parent and Athlete social and work towards increasing the overall “wow” factor of the event. While this first year with live video streaming was already successful, we intend to cover more events next year and make the overall execution more professional. Increasing the “wow” factor will increase the expense of the event so sponsorship growth is essential. Sponsorship growth will open the door to increased sponsorship activation with the possibility of exposure though the live timing website. Thank you for sponsoring the 2012 Marriott J3 Junior Championships and allowing Ski & Snowboard Club Vail to continue its mission to provide youth the opportunity for character growth and excellence through athletics and its vision to stand as both a leading youth development organization and the premier ski and snowboard competition program in the world. 8 We hope that you value this sponsorship as much as we value your support and we look forward to working with you next season.
