2012 Town of Vail CSE Post-event Recap
The America Cup Fly Fishing Tournament September 16-23, 2012
1. 1. An overview outlining the event’s strengths and weaknesses: specifically, what went well and what measures could be taken to
improve the event.
a. Strengths: Many of the attendees made this event a vacation for themselves and family members. The allure of Vail
worked as more guests attended. The event flowed extremely well due to task and logistics documents having been
provided to the lodge headquarters, bus drivers, venue owners, and sector judges prior to the event. Key personnel knew
their roles and expectations. This is important as the event is spread out over 5 different venues for all 3 days. Check
lists, expectations, detailed maps and onsite signage for parking and attendee information. Headquarters / staging
locations were easy to use and site staff was very helpful. Venue locations were excellent and venue owners were all
very pleased.
Volunteers were greater this year and we even had a day with every spot filled! We had 96 volunteers over the 3 fishing
days. May had come to Vail to stay and enjoy the entire event. Our classes were filled with anglers and volunteers.
Expanded Agenda was well received and many attendees commented that they liked having other event happenings.
Sunday September 16, 2012 - Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Soldier's Day
Monday September 17, 2012 - Loch Style Master Class
Tuesday September 18, 2012 - River Master Class
Wednesday September 19, 2012 - Welcome to town mixer with Kevin Compton - VVA
Thursday September 20, 2012 - Registration - Draw - Captain's Meeting
Friday September 21, 2012 - Sessions 1 and 2
Saturday September 22, 2012 - Sessions 3 and 4
Sunday September 23, 2012 - Session 5 and Awards Banquet that evening
b. Weaknesses: Fund raising for the soldier's day came up short, but did not have on schedule early enough. Will start fund
raising immediately after event to industry sponsors and businesses for next year that may provide in kind services or
dollars to be part of event. Program changes made for a budget shortfall that owner covered. Only about half of the
attendees stayed at the headquarters; need better lodging offers. Most rented condos close to the headquarters for much
longer than the 4 day tournament itself. Found it hard to control where people stayed for the groups that were here so
long; future option of including the event fee and lodging into a bundle. The event was held after Oktoberfest and the
town was very quiet for most guests; scheduled 2013 for Sept 12-15, 2013.

from cash revenues.

The America Cup | Jan. 01 2012 - Oct. 10, 2012
The America Cup Fly Fishing Tournament 2012
5. Potential for growth and the development of sponsorships and media exposure.
Exposure this year was very encouraging with a Boulder based media outlet contacting us and following along with
the tournament. Icosa Media did two videos of the event. I believe that this year’s successes will attract larger and more
prominent sponsors for 2013. Sponsors this year (in kind donations of gear/prizes/pro-forms) Ross Reels, Scientific
Anglers, Hardy/Grey, William Joseph, NuCast, Umpqua, Names & Numbers supplied all pens for event, Maui Jim
sunglasses, Ammala Rods, Crazy Mountain Brewery, Murphy Goode Winery, Tred Barta autographed books, George
Daniel autographed books, Wicked Eddies autographed books from Beth Groundwater, Eagle Valley Trout Unlimited
and Colorado Department of Wildlife.
Maui Jim Sunglasses paid one of the team entry fees and sent Andy Mill, skiing Olympian and tarpon guru to be our
key note speaker at the awards banquet.
6. Did the event impact Vail’s “Sense of Community”?
YES! This event highlighted the incredible fisheries and outstanding lifestyle of Vail. Many attendees brought family
members to the event to see the Valley and what is has to offer. Some showed interest in coming back to ski. The local
newspaper ran several stories and a front page picture of the event. With the fantastic weather, the waters producing trout
and the support of the community, it was an outstanding event. With the international aspect of the event and with anglers
from all over the US attending, gave a strong indication of the pull of Vail and its allure.
Learned: Have the event on the last weekend of Vail's Oktoberfest (or like event); this showcases Vail best, not later when
many businesses are closed.
7. In light of the Vail Town Council’s commitment to a sustainable environment, please describe any and all measures that were
taken to produce the event in as “green” and environmentally friendly manner as possible.
• Recycling bags were used at all venues and in all vans and then disposed of at the Evergreen Lodge in their
recycling bins.
• Reusable beat markers and measuring tubes used at event.
• Left over paperwork was recycled. Some will be reused at next year's event.
• Controllers were encouraged to car pool to the venues.
• Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) awareness and cleaning materials provided for both wading items and boat and
boat items.
• Worked with CDOW and Colorado State Parks for use requirements, ANS needs, and spawning areas.
• All venues had post event walk through to pick up any remaining trash or debris.
• Provided post event fishery information to all CDOW, CO State Parks, and venue owners.

Looking to the Future ~
June 21 & 22, 2013 US Youth National Championships US Youth Fly Fishing Team. The USYFFT is an amateur sports team, dedicated
to the development of a distinguished and skilled fly-fishing team that proudly represents the United States in FIPS-Mouche sanctioned national and international
championships each year. In 2012, the Team traveled to Mende, France in the Lozère region and won the Silver medal at the 11th FIPS-Mouche World Youth
Championships. Three of the team members placed in the top 10 rankings, and Austen Randecker won an individual Bronze medal for his third place results. In
2011, the USYFFT represented the United States in Italy for the 10th FIPS-Mouche World Championships. Team USA won the gold medal, and brought the honor
home. Team USA has distinguished itself at every event in which it has competed: 4th place in Slovakia in 2010, and 7th place in 2009 in the Czech Republic.
2016 World Championships bid due January 10, 2013 to the FIPS council in Belgium. FIPS-Mouche is the abbreviation for
Fédération Internationale de Peche Sportive Mouche, or in English the International Sport Fly fishing Federation. It is the fly fishing arm of CIPS, the World
regulating body for competitive fishing in all disciplines. FIPS-Mouche was founded on April 23, 1989 in San Marino, as part of CIPS, was founded in Rome in
1952 and now consists of four International Sport Federations. FIPS-Mouche shall aim to encourage the practice of sport fly fishing throughout the world and shall
do so in collaboration with all CIPS members. In order to achieve this purpose, the Federation shall also collaborate with National Organizations, which are not
members of CIPS. FIPS-Mouche shall also aim, within the Olympic ideal, to foster friendship and understanding among all people, and peace in the world, through
sport. In pursuing these goals FIPS-Mouche shall maintain friendly relationship with all other world organizations sharing this ideal and collaborate with them. Its
members are the National Competitive Fly fishing Bodies of countries from around the World.
Goal is to host the World Championships in 2016 or 2017. 25 countries would be represented in weeklong event.
