Championing the core values of our sport through the Keeper of Lacrosse Project ROBERT LAMANNA When his son developed a love for lacrosse, Lamanna rekindled a relationship with the game he loved in his youth and started a movement to gain approval for varsity lacrosse at North Pocono (Pa.) High. Volunteering to coach the high school team, secure sponsorships and apply for a First Stick Grant from US Lacrosse, Lamanna — armed with Keeper of Lacrosse brochures and delivering an impassioned speech — persuaded the board to approve his proposal. The team will take the field in 2013, giving players from the Scranton Youth Lacrosse Association an opportunity to play in high school. 'There is an incredible pride that comes from mentoring kids who get excited to pick up a stick," said Lamanna, a former U.S. naval aviator. JESSICA GROM SHOULBERG Mendham, N.J. Shuulberg has a nationally ranked high school program that also embraced the values of the Keeper of Lacrosse Project. When Chester Mendham Youth Lacrosse introduced a kiddie lax program for pre-K through second graders, Shoulberg led the weekly clinic along with players from her Mendham High girls' varsity team, who served as instructors to the beginners. Shoulberg also invited grade-school players to take part in halftime exhibitions during Mendham's games. 'The unique opportunity for young girls to have all girls' instructors is truly rare in any recreational sport," Shoulberg said. KYLE HARRISON Irvine, Calif. This summer, the Keeper of Lacrosse Project sponsored awards at the 40th-annual Vail Shootout in Colorado that recognized the players in each division that exemplified "Keeper" values. It was at senior night for two of my friends who played lacrosse at UConn. Knowing that, for them, it might be the last chance they would have to play competitively in their sport was the moment I realized how much bigger women's sports is than what goes on TV." — Maya Moore, one of the best players in IJConn basketball history, the No. 1 pick in the 2011 WNBA draft (Minnesota) and 2012 Olympian with Team USA.
