We were in Town with the family on Sunday afternoon. We had two objectives: the Farmer's Market and the car show. October Fest was also on the list if we had time. We did the usual stroll through the Farmer's Market up to the Solaris and then down to Gore Creek Drive. The car show was fantastic! My grandson had to go visit each exhibit. My wife was commenting on what a nice addition to the fall events, recalling the cars she saw last year as well. I observed "guests" (and locals) interacting and discussing the exhibits with the owners. One -on -one contact! I did not see a single car without someone stopping, lingering, admiring and discussing the exhibit. People were posing and taking photos in front of their favorite cars. I also saw a fair number of people carrying ice cream cones, food, and shopping bags, obviously a part of the fun. It was casual, not hurried, open enough to enjoy, and fortunately the weather cooperated! We never did get to Lionshead. From my professional viewpoint, fire and emergency access was well maintained. This morning, I observed the car carriers loading in front of Cascade. It is obvious the number of room nights was enhanced by the vendors and exhibitors themselves. CA%1. I would encourage you to continue this event. I am of the opinion it is a good addition to the fall entertainment line up. Thanks for asking. Michael McGee PS. The family also enjoyed the event at the airport! The unique combination of the auction on Friday, show on Saturday, party at Manor Vail on Saturday evening and the Vail Village display on Sunday makes it one of the best and fun shows I have ever participated in. As a retired CEO of a Fortune 500 company, I have attended many shows across America and consider this one of the very best. We stayed at the Four Seasons and it was excellent! 1 do have to add an area of disappointment I felt this year in the way the classes were configured. In all the shows I have attended over the years, 1 have never seen a category that includes every AMERICA CLASSIC produced from the late 1800's until 1961. In this show, that put an Auburn, Model A Ford, Hudson and Corvette in the same class. We even had a 1963 Corvette and 1949 Dodge RETRO -MOD in the 1961 American Classic class. I would hope that next year the team would develop additional categories such as American Sportcars or Corvettes (defined as the only American Sportscar) and other classes that allow the earlier great cars of the past have a chance to be recognized. i __) Again, thanks for putting on a super show and hope you will understand that many of us would appreciate a further investigation into the development of fair and equitable classes. The volunteers were very gracious and dedicated. And, of course the venues were spectacular. I attended Saturday and Sunday, showing my 1973 Ford Maverick... believe it or not, the only Maverick in the show! Please permit me make a few comments for your consideration in future events. 1. KEEP DOING THIS. IT'S A GREAT END -OF- SUMMER EVENT! The property on Saturday easily handled all the cars, aircraft, vendors, and mob of spectators. 2. The music was wonderful, thanks for not playing 60s hits all day. 3. It was good to have the empty hangar for some shade. 4. Your announcements thanking sponsors were very professional and nicely paced. Change this if you think it's appropriate: I arrived early on Saturday, approximately 8:15 am. I was directed to park in the first row next to the hangar, with my car facing the huge wall. I think your first row should face away from the hangar wall, with the front of those spectacular vehicles pointed toward the meandering crowd, not at that wall. Sunday was spectacular. A wonderful venue for a car show. Greatjob ordering the beautiful weather. We do not live in Vail, so we enjoyed the opportunity to wander around and visit the shops and restaurants. (We had dinner at Lancelots on Saturday evening, it was very nice.) Sunday's crowd was splendid. My car display is designed to make people smile and engage them in fun conversation - and your visitors were a great bunch of people from all over the country and the world ... just as I would expect when visiting Vail, Colorado. We had a lot of laughs around the Maverati, reminiscing about old cars and skiing in the 70s. &K16 Do your track the spectacular ballots that are collected on Saturday and Sunday? I absolutely NEVER expect to win a prize at a car show, but it would be nice to receive an email listing of winners and the chronological votes cast for each vehicle in the categories. I think many owners - especially those who have invested time and money in their rides - would like to know where they stood in the eyes of the spectators. Thanks, again, for a great weekend. I like that the show attracts higher -end unusual cars that are not seen very often at most of the Denver -area shows. The hotel accommodations at the Vail Manor Lodge were excellent. We had a suite with two bedrooms - one for my wife and I, the other for my daughter and her friend. My only complaint about the weekend (other than the transmission failure) is that the meals we had at various Vail restaurants were not that great. However, the food vendors at the Airport show were excellent, and I did like the Farmer's Market. 'I'll take you fora loop and a barrel roll ifyou)m up for it, Rower said. - 'Yes' I said. 'OR, fast 1 need you to put this parachute on - have you ever wom, a para- chute before?' My heart skipped. Things just got real I was about to go upside down in an, open cockpit and there is always a chance things won't go as planned. "If we need to get out of the plane right away, IT say,'Bailout! Bailoutl Ball - out!' Rower said. "If you're still in the plane after the thhd'Bafloue the plane is yours because I'm already gone. Just those words got my blood pumping. 'Now, to get out, you'll have to undo the seat belt, climb onto the wing and dive between the wing and the tail,' Rower continued. 'Be sure to count m'three potato' before you pull the D -ring, which they call the 'rip cord' in the movies. It's really important not to pull the D -ring too soon or the parachute might get caught up in the tail' As much 7 it spiked my adrenaline, was still game They don't call it a'ride' for nothing. I reasoned 1 was in steady hands. Rower was awarded Top Gun as an F -16 Fighting Falcon pilot for the U.S. Air Force. The odds of him los- ing control on a simple loop and barrel roll were practi- cally niL Besides, I'd just watched him rehearse much scarier aerobatics with his part- ner, Buck Boatman, who Ries a Pitts Special, which is a smaller biplane. The rehearsal was for Saturdays airshow at the Wheels and Wings event PRO PILOTS During rehearsal, Rower and Boatman looped, rolled and stalled, pulling maneu- veiswith names lflre'ham- mcrhead' and 'Cuban eight' Atone point, Roetman flew under a ribbon that was held across the runway In fv„tnff the vmnnd. 'It was perfect conditions -no wind, Rower said. OPEN COCKPIT At last it was my turn to sample the air. Rower put me in a parachute and strapped me into the front seat. 'Prop clear ?' he asked the ground crew. The 950- horse power en- gine roared tolife. My hair blew bark and the cockpit rumbled as the 9 -foot pro- peller got up to speed. "One cylinder on that engine is basically equiva- lent to the power of small car; amember of the ground support crew told me earlier. The same crew mem- her_ Bob F.van, alto told 'Here we go!" Rower cracked over my headset radio. I watched the needle on the speedometer as we went down the runway: 80 ... 90 ... too mph. The tail lifted off the ground, level- ing the plane out, allowing us to see "straight ahead, and then we were free. I imagined thesensa- tion athousand times but that didn't prepare me for the Rood of emotiowas I watched the ground recede, thewindlicldngmyface. The nose of the plane rose and then went into a dive, gaining speed for the Imp. Fora second I was weightless. I've had the feeling on roller coasters but this was scarier - there was no track in front of me. In the plane it was just air, air and more air all around and mountains below. Through the windshield the ground evaporated and we shot into empty blue sky.
