He brings to the Center a background in both aging research and clinical product development. As research scientist, Dr. Greenleaf focused on age-related changes in the human neuroendocrine system, and the effects of hormones on mood and behavior. As a medical product developer, his focus has been on the use of simulation and telemedicine technology to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Stroke, Addictions, Autism, and other difficult problems in behavioral and physical medicine. Dr. Greenleaf is known internationally as an early pioneer in the medical application of virtual environment technology, and is viewed as one of the founders of the field. Anne Friedlander - Director of the Mobility Division - Stanford Center on Longevity During her time at Stanford, Anne has developed innovative strategies to enhance mobility and physical function throughout the lifespan and promoted collaborative efforts between academia and industry. Dr. Friedlander has broad research experience in the areas of enhancing human performance, environmental physiology, and using physical activity and mobility to promote healthy aging. She is currently working with a startup corporate wellness company where she is able to apply her deep scientific experience to integrate best practices in applied disease prevention across the activity, healthy eating and stress reduction programs within the company. www.VailLivingWell.Org Thomas Rando - Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences, Deputy Director, Stanford Center on Longevity Thomas Rando is Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford where he is the Director of the Glenn Laboratories for the Biology of Aging. He is also Chief of Neurology and Director of the Rehabilitation Research & Development Center of Excellence at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. He is a founding director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association clinic at the Stanford Medical Center. Research in the Rando laboratory focuses on tissue-specific stem cells in aging and disease, and on pathogenetic mechanisms and gene therapy for muscular dystrophies. His research on aging has demonstrated that it is possible to identify biochemical stimuli that can induce stem cells in old tissues to repair injuries as effectively as in young tissues, and this work has broad implications for the fields of regenerative medicine and stem cell transplantation. Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi Tenzin Priyadarshi (The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi) is the Founding Director of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also serves as the founding President of the Prajnopaya Foundation, a worldwide humanitarian organization. Priyadarshi lectures internationally on Buddhist philosophy and socio-political issues. He belongs to the rimé (non-sectarian) movement within Tibetan Buddhism. He founded the Prajnopaya Institute to create an avenue for critical study and practice of Buddhist philosophy within Europe and North America. To promote contemplative programs in North America, he founded Bodhimarga, a CyberDharma community with satellite locations in various parts of North America and Asia. Priyadarshi has been active in conflict resolution processes in India and Sri Lanka. He has been involved in inter-religious dialogue with religious leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Pope Benedict XVI. www.VailLivingWell.Org Scott Small After graduating from NYU with a B.A. in experimental psychology, Dr. Small began the MD/PhD program at Columbia University in Eric Kandel’s laboratory. Discovering that he enjoyed patient care more than he anticipated, he decided to focus exclusively on his medical training. After completing a medical internship at UCLA, a neurology residency and chief residency at Columbia, and a fellowship with Richard Mayeux, Dr. Small "returned" to research. Informed by his prior experience studying the psychology of memory, the physiology of neurons, and the neurology of the disease he began a research program at Columbia dedicated to investigating intractable disorders of the brain. Taking a decidedly top-down approach, he pioneered the development of brain imaging tools designed to pinpoint brain dysfunction in human patients and mouse models of disease. More recently, Dr. Small has combined brain imaging with gene-expression technologies to uncover novel molecular defects underlying Alzheimer’s disease and aging. Jeremy Bailenson Jeremy Bailenson is founding director of Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Stanford, and a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment. Bailenson’s main area of interest is the phenomenon of digital human representation, especially in the context of immersive virtual reality. He explores the manner in which people are able to represent themselves when the physical constraints of body and veridically- rendered behaviors are removed. Furthermore, he designs and studies virtual reality systems that allow physically remote individuals to meet in virtual space, and explores the manner in which these systems change the nature of verbal and nonverbal interaction. In particular, he explores how virtual reality can change the way people think about education, environmental behavior, and health. www.VailLivingWell.Org Daniel Asher Daniel Asher- Culinary Director & Operations Chef- Root Down / Linger Chef Daniel Asher is proud to be a part of the collaborative culinary team at Root Down & Linger Restaurants; with over 18 years of commercial food service experience, he constantly thrives on seeking the next level of dining excellence.
