HomeMy WebLinkAbout7. Team AVP Proposal 2014
To Whom It May Concern:
Town of Vail/Commission on Special Events
Vail, Colorado
Following up on last year’s successful “Special Event” within our Event – the ‘AVP All Stars featuring
3-Time Olympic Champion, Kerri Walsh-Jennings’; the AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals)
Pro Beach Tour would like to continue their relationship with both the Annual Vail King of the
Mountain Open and the Town of Vail.
Although the top players from the United States will be in Europe at an FIVB Grand Slam event on the
same dates as this year’s 42nd Annual Vail King of the Mountain Open, June 13-15, the AVP and King
of the Mountain Volleyball are proposing a “Team AVP” cadre of hand-picked, other beach
professionals (who would not be at the tournament in Europe) to attend our Event with the express
purpose of coaching our traditional FREE Juniors Beach Volleyball Clinic and to help promote the AVP
Pro Beach Tour and a proposed Volleyball Festival combining both the King of the Mountain Open and
an AVP Pro Beach Tour tournament, which would begin in 2015. (Such a “Festival” would wrap-
around the Father’s Day Weekend, creating the first Event of its kind for an AVP tournament in the
United States – a pro beach volleyball tournament and a “national” grassroots tourney at the same time;
thereby bringing in not only the already established families and players over that weekend; but, also,
the spectators who would attend the pro event. More on that at a later date.)
The “Team AVP” concept (which will only occur in Vail) will serve not only to keep our Juniors Clinic
at an already established high level; but, also to keep continuity between the AVP and the Town of Vail
leading into the proposed “Festival”. However, there would be expenses incurred which are not in the
King of the Mountain Volleyball budget: transportation and lodging for said “Team AVP” professionals
as well as a “stipend” for each player.
These additional expenses would not be nearly as high as the cost that was incurred for last year’s
“Special Event”:
Lodging: The Sonnenalp Hotel has agreed to provide complimentary housing for
said “coaches”.
Transportation: This would have to be via commercial flights either into the Eagle County
Airport; or into Denver w/shuttle service to Vail as American Airlines will
not be supporting any summer Events with discounted tickets (as told to
me by Gabe with Vail Resorts). Estimated cost: $300-500, per ticket, for
each individual involved, depending upon where they are flying out of.
Players “stipend”: Upwards of $500-1,000 dollars per each individual involved (TBD).
As such, the AVP would add heightened exposure and promotional visibility within their marketing of
this year’s AVP events and would give the King of the Mountain Open more promotional “firepower”
for this year’s tourney – thereby helping to bring the large number of juniors participants (and their
families) that attended last year’s Event.
If King of the Mountain Volleyball cannot support the “Team AVP” concept, we will negotiate to bring
in our own selected coaches (at our own expense; within our budget); however, the marketing strength
will not be as strong and we will, probably, see a decrease from last year’s numbers of participants. We
will continue the processes to, hopefully, create the aforementioned “Festival” for 2015.
