My personal quote is 'Living in Vail is like having rich parents, everything they do is done well'. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about my new home for the last 10 years. Eileen M. Goode, Vail, CO • Strongly support be careful to balance the socio- economic groups • Strongly support Bring back winter concert series. • Strongly support Bring in more R &B events • Strongly support Bus to Ford Park, Walking from transportation center sucks • Strongly support Clearly the sales tax spikes and the business community supports special events and as a resident, business owner and taxpayer, I believe in this sound business strategy. • Strongly support Consider at least one event geared towards international guests. • Strongly support Don't give Highline Sports carte blanche. • Strongly support Event organizers should be expected to establish sustainability after being supported by the Town for a few seasons. This will allow money to be spent to develop new programs. Town funding should not become a free ride. • Strongly support Events are what the end customer wants and increase revenue for Vail while having fun. • Strongly support Events often feel two corporate (Bud Light anyone). Would like to see events that seem more organic or community driven (like the Farmers Market). • Strongly support Events other than sports. • Strongly support Generate more tax revenue and get us bigger and better events. Keep them free of course • Strongly support Great use of tax dollars on these eventsM • Strongly support I appreciate everything the town does to promote the activities in Vail. Vail is a great community. • Strongly support I just wonder why there are no winter concerts in the Ford Park Amphitheater. It's the highest quality venue, seems vail should show it off all year round • Strongly support I strongly support artist events in Vail but have to wonder if Vail Village can handle the larger venues. I was thrilled to see the band Train at Ford Park a few year ago, I would love to see larger acts but in an area in Vail that can accomodat them. • Strongly support I suggest more information be provided when the events are advertised in media such as the Vail Daily. Times and locations specifics especially. • Strongly support I think it has been a great idea and has been very successful. In my opinion it seems time to concentrate on the events we have instead of adding any more. • Strongly support I think it's great to support events in Vail, but we should be mindful of the amount spent on events vs. other areas of importance (i.e. environment, health and wellness, infrastructure, renewable energy, etc.) Page 1 of 10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Strongly support I think the town has done a great job using events to drive economic development and to broaden the tax base during the economic downturn. I support this as one arrow in the quiver of a larger overall development plan. The only danger, I think, is falling into a posture where we rely too heavily on events for economic vitality - -at the expense of a more diverse strategy. • Strongly support I think there should be more music • Strongly support I would rather funds be diverted for the making of another underpass • Strongly support If Vail doesn't help bring in events who will? • Strongly support Improve the quality of the bands who play at Hot Summer Nights as some of them last summer were really lousy. Bands should appeal to the over 40 crowd. • Strongly support It at times appears that numerious events on the same day -over lapping when maybe cold be spread out a bit more. • Strongly support It was a mistake last year to charge for winter time events (I can't remember which events). It was great that it was changed this year to be free again. • Strongly support Keep bringing more and more events to Vail, both Winter and Summer events. (and Oktoberfest!) • Strongly support Keep them coming. Treat the locals like kings • Strongly support keep up the promotions... try and keep it classy where possible free events bring a lot of different types of people to vail ... the police do a good job of keeping people who want to bring trouble in check... thanks to them and to the bus department for getting everyone back and forth... more information for people coming and going to other cities and how to get there would be helpful in and around the transportation center for at night when the information center is closed... • Strongly support Many ticked events are far too expensive for lower income residents • Strongly support More bike racks would be helpful in town; during events and the farmer's market it is hard to lock up bikes at the edges of the towns. • Strongly support More classical music, if possible. • Strongly support More events geared toward over 40 people who might actually spend some money in town, as opposed to rap groups that tend to attract less desirable people. • Strongly support More events in Lionshead • Strongly support More events would be good, but they have to be good quality. • Strongly support more free big name events in summer • Strongly support More sport and youth focused events • Strongly support Need a permanent event center IE Villar type • Strongly support need to do a better job promoting them, esp across the front range Page 2of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Strongly support no • Strongly support no • Strongly support no • Strongly support No • Strongly support No • Strongly support No. • Strongly support None • Strongly support Parking at Ford Park is a pain during events. • Strongly support Perhaps events should be abit more selectively targeted at the groups of guests who are already here visiting and those who will spend money when they come to an event. Not sure if so many concerts for the kids from Denver are really beneficial. • Strongly support Please include the ADA Act to comply • Strongly support Please make sure that the bands booked are the right ones for Vail and its image. • Strongly support Please rethink the Spring Back to Vail events. They seem to be out of hand now. I personally witnessed drinking (open containers on bus and in town this past weekend. and yes, just what is the benefit to the town and /or residents? Page 3of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Strongly support Regarding the Farmer's Market. The Town of Vail is allowing this very public event, on public streets to be managed more like a private event. The farmer's market is allowing the largest real estate firm to operate it's tent to the exclusion of all other real estate companies. One company half a block from meadow drive is not allowed to have a space there while the largest company, over the last couple years has the most visible spot in the whole market. The Farmer's Market manager says the real estate company is permited to sponsor the event and have a tent because they have an office on Meadow Drive. But the tent is oftentimes staffed by people from their offices located at other locations. This is not fair and the TOV could be liable here because they are allowing one company to prosper and benefit to the exlcusion of all others. The Farmer's market now says this company is 'sponsoring' the Farmers market. Sorry, but it appears that the company is paying off the Farmer's market hundreds of thousands of dollars while that company makes upwards of a million dollars in commissions. This is not fair to all the other companies in town. Every time a potential buyer goes to that tent that buyer is less likely to go into another Realtor's office. The other Realtor's are tax - paying citizens. Even more, the hipocracy is clear: There is a farmer's market where you allow many different vendors for your wares with the exception of real estate. The only thing that the real estate company has in common with the Farmer's Market is that they are Farming the market. If the Farmer's Market is to be equitable it could either not allow real estate companies into the market or they could set up a 'lottery system' where different Vail -based companies could apply for tent space and different companies would rotate through the farmers market throughout the summer. • Strongly support Solaris venue is dangerous. Too few egress points and people crowding into the area in front of the stage. Also, why are we spending money moving /building the stage in 3 different places during Spring Back? seems like a waste of money. • Strongly support Special events bring people • Strongly support Supporting events (financially) is crucial to their overall success. • Strongly support The Arabelle and state liquor permitting should be examined. There has to be an easier more effective way for this to be handled. I would hope that the Town of Vail and Vail Resorts could come up with a creative solution to make event permitting easier and more advantageous for event producers that serve alcohol. A solution for the very expensive tent rental would be great as well. I wonder if the town could own a coupe of tents and have staff to put them up for less than what it costs to put them up for events right now. • Strongly support The balance between highbrow and lowbrow events seems good. It's important, in my opinion, that the Town provide plenty of visible security at events that may get a little rowdy as once a large event gets out of control it generally takes a community years to recover its reputation and attract families back. Page 4 of 10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Strongly support the events need to help bring individuals to Vail and spend money on lodging, food, beverage and other services to create a strong local community ... Telluride does an amazing job with their festivals all summer long creating great lodging and restaurant sales all summer long ... I feel like Town of Vail does not want any noise of good vibration happening to keep their residents happy with no noise ... hello it's a ski town it should be rocking and if you want no noise go to another resort where they sleep all the time ... Vail needs to focus on making the town rock with all different events that have great energy and court those great events to come to the Town of Vail ... oh then you have to do something. • Strongly support There needs to be some mud season events. My family and friends try to visit during off season, but when they arrive.... there is nothing to do. My best friend is coming to town the first week of May, and everything I have planned to do involves getting out of Vail and visiting other parts of the state. Even if there was ONE event planned during May and October - more people who visit Vail or remain in the valley instead of fleeing to Fruita /Moab /Denver /other states. • Strongly support These events help keep the sense of community strong among locals. • Strongly support They kept us ahead of our competition • Strongly support Think there should be one Oktoberfest (in Lionshead) and it's need to have some new life breathed into it to make it more popular and a bigger draw to front rangers. • Strongly support Too many small events that crowd the town but do not add that much positve revenue. The cultural events like Bravo /Dance /Jazz are excellent and have a very good economic impact. • Strongly support Town funds help to support events. Events help to bring in visitors and revenue. It only makes sense that the Town would provide financial assistance. • Strongly support Town investment must be offset by incremental tax generated and decline as events are established • Strongly support Vail events improve lifestyle for residents and visitors. • Strongly support Want more that involve restaurants /bars but that are in house for them while benefitting the customer. Like when we have street music venues. • Strongly support We are a destination resort community. Our survival depends on tourism. • Strongly support We need a bigger venue than ford park. STS9 will attract 7000 people • Strongly support We need to find the right balance between promoting events and being so successful that the overcrowding creates a negative experience for locals and guests. • Strongly support We need to minimise problems like last weekends concert where young people were drunk and disorderly. • Strongly support We, family and friends, love the events that the town supports and invests in. Please continue to do so. • Strongly support Well run & high quality Page 5of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Strongly support would like to see a music festival in the summer with up and coming bands geared to a younger audience along the lines of of bands at lollapalooza • Strongly support Would love to see a performing arts center in Vail that could host indoor events in the winter. • Strongly support Yes, the piper must be paid and we all take part in that. • Strongly support You have to be smart and even handed in events you invest in. Parking is what it is and that needs to be considered in investing in huge events. Ticketing needs to be very limited when we invite people to come and can't provide parking. The police need to be visible and helpful and leave those green envelopes in the office. • Strongly oppose After an event occurs twice, the event should be able to charge a ticket price that covers costs and no longer eligible for a government subsidy. • Strongly oppose Don't'invest' in any events. Using the word 'invests' shows your bias. You SPEND money on events. We don't need ANY events. • Strongly oppose Spring back to Vail brings the WRONG people here. There are not enough events that bring the RIGHT people here. See Aspen as an example of Right - people events. It's not the number of people, it's the TYPE of people. Current Events bring the WRONG people to Vail. • Somewhat oppose Attract crowds that will spend money in town • Somewhat oppose Dont need to build more before we can fix the environmental issues. • Somewhat oppose Doubt that events like Burton bring in enough revenue to justify TOVs subsidy, would like to see tax revenue figures • Somewhat oppose I believe the negatives out weigh the questionable benefits. These people don't spend in shops and not much in restaurants • Somewhat oppose I think we spend too much on events. I am all in favor to help start -up events, but after a few years they should not receive Town funding. • Somewhat oppose I think you need raise the bar on these events and that they attract a base of people that would further enhance our town. • Somewhat oppose I'm not convinced that all the events really have a positive impact on our economy. • Somewhat oppose Keep the rap concerts out of Vail and especially away from Ford Park. • Somewhat oppose Not sure about government investing in events; maybe discounts or more favorable taxing treatment would be better Page 6of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Somewhat oppose Scale down. The mountain sells itself and the town should sell itself. Why press so hard to offer events that no one really wants? In other words: back off! Trust the community to come up with the right mix of offerings to keep folks coming - -to the shopping, the restaurants, the activities that VA doesn't have to micro - manage and produce. Less truly can be more! • Somewhat oppose see previous comments on quality of events • Somewhat oppose Seems a little corrupt when the CSE and Town Event Managers compares personal gift bags of different events. Remember you are spending tax dollars! • Somewhat oppose Starting this year I am concerned with public marijuana use at events. There are too many events that encourage excessive drinking. I do not want to see town money used to support events. I think the sponsors should pay for the event. • Somewhat oppose Too many. • Somewhat oppose Vail needs to develop accurate metrics for events and have set ROI goals before investing. • Somewhat oppose Why even have events if you're not going to have ample free parking • Somewhat in favor BRAVO and the farmer's market, dance festival are FANTASTIC HIGH QUALITY UNIQUE EVENTS. the Teva games and the like are a pain. Strongly support the US Pro Cycling Tour. • Somewhat in favor Burton open is a bit overwhelming. • Somewhat in favor during Bravo, very difficult to park at Ford park unless yu come over 1 hour before the performances. • Somewhat in favor Each event should be carefully evaluated for the contribution it makes - economic, enhance Vail's reputation in sport or international community, attract destination guests, etc.. Not all events can, nor should they, draw destination guests. Some are just plain fun or provide entertainment for guests while they are here, but these events should not try to 'take over the town' and disrupt the guest experience. . • Somewhat in favor Event investments should measurably pay for themselves within 3 years or be discontinued in favor of something that will • Somewhat in favor Events are a great tool and will be well supported if they are chosen carefully and delivered well. We need to be more disciplined to make sure that they mesh with our vision of this town. We belabor the process of design and building for a vision of the villages, then we obstruct the approved work with used white tents 1/3 of the time (and the setup and breakdown periods degrade the pedestrian experience of Vail tremendously, often for longer than is reasonable). • Somewhat in favor Events are an example of commercial vs community interests -- important, by of less concern for residents and second home owners - -with some very notable exceptions i.e. Bravos €; . • Somewhat in favor Find better quality acts for Spring Back to Vail Page 7of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Somewhat in favor Funding for some events is necessary. I seems like we keep adding things, give it only one year to prove itself, and then it goes away. I would rather new events have funding for a couple of years to get established, and then funding sunset. Special events should not be dependent on funding from the town for long term. • Somewhat in favor Happy about the new bluegrass series -great talent. Always a trade off with rock concerts but that is what brings in the big • Somewhat in favor I don't want Vail to turn into a Telluride with major destination events throughout the summer season. That will negatively crowds. And they do spend. Wondering why Dobson doesn't have shows anymore. There seems to be a point of diminishing • Somewhat in favor returns with the free shows; once there are too many people here, then we see property damage, behavior problems, disruption of normal business. Also always been curious if the bigger crowds could be accommodated by walking up the • Somewhat in favor mountain in Lionshead or Gold Peak. • Somewhat in favor How much do they cost? • Somewhat in favor I am ok with the town investing in events, but there are too many. • Somewhat in favor I am strongly in favor of events that bring sestination guests; I am against one -night stand events that flood the town but do not contribute to economics • Somewhat in favor I don't know if its that I'm getting older, but some of the concerts the TOV does for free are getting out of hand. • Somewhat in favor I don't want Vail to turn into a Telluride with major destination events throughout the summer season. That will negatively Page 8 of 10 impact the live- ability of the town. • Somewhat in favor I like sporting events and more family friendly music (again, not the kind of music that attracts the pot smoking /peddling crowd) • Somewhat in favor I really enjoy the outdoor concerts and free events! • Somewhat in favor I think it's a shame that winter street beat concerts are no longer. • Somewhat in favor I think the Town needs to look at the return it gets in tax dollars spent by people attending these events. Either through lodging, retail and restaurant purchases. I think the Town needs to be more careful that the amount they are spending reaps rewards for the Town. • Somewhat in favor I'm in favor of the events as long as the events clearly pay for themselves through increased taxes because of rooms booked and other money spent by tourists that come in for the events. • Somewhat in favor I'm very disappointed that Vail allowed the use of its name and invested funds in the World Cup 2015 event only to have it become a Beaver Creek event. • Somewhat in favor If it brings in overnight guests I'm in favor. If it brings in daytrippers, not. • Somewhat in favor In general, this seems like a good move, but adding too many events will give people and businesses event fatigue. There is a focus on outdoorsy events, but adding more brain - stimulating events similar to the Aspen ideas festival or TED talks, etc would add more variety and bring new types of visitors here. Page 8 of 10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Somewhat in favor It's hard to have an informed opinion without knowing more about the town's overall budget, but I tend to think that Vail isn't broke and supporting events is something that the town can afford. Unless I'm missing something, it seems like these events create more 'buzz' about the community and that's a good thing. • Somewhat in favor July 4 is a wonderful day in Vail, but it is almost impossible to get into town. There should be more food sold on the street that day. All restaurants are overflowing. This is a good problem to have, I guess. • Somewhat in favor just reiterate the one I made above • Somewhat in favor Miss the winter concert series. I wish there would be a big name concert once a month in the winter during quiet weekends to generate traffic. • Somewhat in favor no • Somewhat in favor no • Somewhat in favor no • Somewhat in favor no • Somewhat in favor See previous comments. Keep the loud rock concert type events isolated or at Golden Peak. Actually, keep them in Keystone. • Somewhat in favor Summer events are far superior to winter events, which only seem to acknowledge 20 year olds. • Somewhat in favor The town needs to be the nucleus for the events, and should seek out side sponsors when ever possible. • Somewhat in favor The Vail Jazz Festival (concerts) are under - funded compared to Bravo. • Somewhat in favor They are not essential to our experience. The skiing, the summer mountain biking, adventure ridge, swimming, and town (both village and lionshead) all are what we come for. We end up not going to any events really, one or two partial concerts. We do like the fireworks, the torchlight parades. • Somewhat in favor Too many teen events..... what about the adults who are paying for the teens to be there? Lots of loud music. • Somewhat in favor TOV buses do not run frequently enough in summer to get to and from some of the events • Somewhat in favor While I am supportive, I want to see that the Town isn't just throwing money at things because it's available. I'd rather see a stronger evaluation and more scrutiny. Events have to be tried to determine if they're successful, but I'd like to see the Town back away from failed /failing events sooner. For example, the film festival seemed to me to be a bust. Teva /Eddie Bauer games are worthy of a shoulder- shrug. And, the Burton US Open attracts a younger, but heavy- drug -user crowd. I was offered the opportunity to purchase illicit substances numerous times during this event. It makes me wonder what the critieria are for selecting events. • Somewhat in favor YAY HOT SUMMER NIGHTS. • Neutral As with anything, we just need to maintain a balance of quality events that cater to a variety of interests. • Neutral I am not sure of the Town of Vail's economic development strategy Page 9of10 TOWN OF VAIL COMMUNITY SURVEY 2014 Preliminary Results Do you have any further comments on events in Vail? event investment comment • Neutral I do not believe that most of the events supported actually add to the economic vitality ... mostly entertain weekend visitors that are here anyway ... more attention to off - season, mid week business development, as well as mid -week tourism development in general would be most helpful. • Neutral I realize it is a difficult balance between what events the town supports and those it doesn't. Are the sponsorships made only for economic benefit of town, i.e., sales, lodging taxes etc. or are their other motives involved. I can't tell which. • Neutral I suppose I am not informed enough to make that opinion • Neutral I think sometimes Vail gets a little carried away with some of the 'party' events. I'm more in favor of the athletic types of events. • Neutral I think there could be better information about events. Sometimes things are only mentioined in the Vail Daily the day of the event (which is too late) or after the fact. Or sometimes there is incomplete information (tells you the date and price, but not where to go), etc. • Neutral I'd like to hear some big band era music -5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, base, drums, guitar, and a good singer that you can understand! • Neutral I'm just not into intense crowds and some of the music • Neutral Just don't get so aggressive as to spoil what we all came here for to begin with... • Neutral no • Neutral Oldies concert • Neutral Question is to general to reply. • Neutral The big free concerts have been bands that attract 10,000 rowdy young kids that crowd and trash the town and spend very little money. You should bring bands that will attract an older audience. • Neutral There has always seems to be events such a concerts geared outwards younger folks but nothing really for children and /or families. The Town really lacks that and you should take a few cues from Beaver Creek when it comes to family /children's events & activities. • Neutral Too much money spent of replacing artwork and snowmelted streets, not enough on quality music. • Neutral village run internet service would be great • Neutral Why not free musicians on vail mountain at the end of the day? Something parents can take the kids to apres skiing or older residents can go to for fun apres skiing. Page 10 of 10
