(Scott Willoughby, The Denver Post) EAGLE — Talk, as they say, is cheap. And so it was, after several months of tourist-town hyperbole about rivers "on fire" and fishing-guide chatter over the "best fishing in 20 years," America Cup Fly Fishing Tournament (http://www.theamericacup.com/index.html) founder John Knight launched his dory in a light rain, handed a borrowed rod to a visiting angler and calmly looked on as Tucker Horne plucked a wild, 15-inch Colorado River cutthroat from Sylvan Lake with fewer than 10 casts of a basic parachute Adams fly. "That was awesome," said Horne, from Charlotte, N.C. "That's the first cutthroat I've ever caught. I wasn't expecting that at all." It was just the sort of reaction Knight is hoping to elicit from those participating in his seventh annual America Cup tournament when it returns to the trout fisheries of Eagle and Summit counties this week. After alternating years of drought and downpours and, frankly, challenging tournament-fishing conditions, the nation's largest international fly-fishing competition under the meticulous European Fips-Mouche format (http://www.theamericacup.com/2014/FIPS- DAY (/POPULAR) HOUR (/POPULAR) NEWS (/POPULAR) SPORTS (/POPULAR)BIZ (/POPULAR) A&E (/POPULAR) EMAIL (/POPULAR) LIFE (/POPULAR) Wolves surprise selves, SaberCats(http://www.denverpost.com/preps/ci_26755697/wolves-surprise-selves-sabercats?source=most_viewed) Goalie situation getting better for Avalanche(http://www.denverpost.com/avalanche/ci_26756318/goalie-situation-getting-better-avalanche?source=most_viewed) Eagles end 24-1 season champs MOST POPULAR (/POPULAR) Willoughby: Autumn attirerequest: "Wear extraorange"(http://www.denverpost.com/willoughby/ci_26755569/autumn-attire-request-wear-extra-orange?source=pkg) Legendary climber JeffLowe making remarkableturnaround in battle withdisease(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26755517/movie-both-heartwarming-heartbreaking?source=pkg) Erik Weihenmayer showsonce again that barrierscan be broken withambition(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26755516/courageous-kayaker?source=pkg) Willoughby: Blindkayakers take on GrandCanyon(http://www.denverpost.com/willoughby/ci_26728593/willoughby-blind-kayakers-take-grand-canyon? Oct 12: Oct 8: Mouche.Rules.2013.pdf) is looking to make a statement. The opportunity to showcase Colorado fly-fishing couldn't come at a better time. "It's key, because I go to Bosnia next June to accept the 'sacred scroll' as the host for the 2016 World Fly Fishing Championships, sort of like the Olympic torch, and my presentation is going to be about wild trout and the mountains and how clean it is," Knight said. "Compared to the rest of the world with stocked trout, Colorado and the West may be the epitome of wild trout and fly-fishing. I don't care where you're from, it's like, 'Oh, I wish I could go to Colorado and fish.' " Of course, it never hurts when the fishing actually lives up to the hype. And it would seem that this summer, more than many in recent memory, the hype may actually be trying to keep up with the fishing. "It's amazing what a little water does," said Bob Dye, a guide out of Evergreen's Blue Quill Angler (http://www.bluequillangler.com/) shop who spends more than 100 days a year on the Colorado River. "It's still a little high for wade fishing on the lower river, but we never really saw the water temperature warm up in August, and the fishing has been steady all summer." The Colorado River upstream of Dotsero is just one of five fishing venues that will host some 180 anglers split among 16 teams from Europe, Canada and the U.S. during competition Friday through Sunday. And despite the stellar season it has seen, it's pegged as the least consistent of the bunch. The nearby Eagle River and Blue River below Green Mountain Reservoir, both of which feed into the Colorado, tend to be more resilient to weather events and have been producing fish all summer. "That's sort of the curse of tournament fishing. It's like booking a ski trip and hoping you get powder," said Knight, the sales director for Nova Guides (http://novaguides.com/) at Camp Hale. "But because of that, I'm on the upper Eagle, which doesn't get blown out. I'm on the tailwater below Green Mountain, which doesn't get blown out, and I've got two lakes. So four out of five fisheries, I'm good no matter what the conditions are. The Colorado River below Red Creek, that's 50/50. But you can stick fish on a muddy Colorado, if you know how." The teams of five anglers traveled from as far as Poland and as close as Denver to ply their technical fishing skills in the catch-and-release World Cup-style tournament that serves as precursor to the 36th annual World Fly Fishing Championship awarded to Vail in September 2016. "It was a fairy tale to think that we could get the Worlds," Knight said. "But we got it." Leading up to the World Championship tournament, Knight's organizing committee also landed the 14th Fips-Mouche Youth World Fly Fishing Championships in August 2015 and the U.S. National Fly Fishing Championship in October 2015. But for now, the focus is on America Cup 2014 and the stellar September fishing conditions around the rivers and lakes of Eagle and Summit counties. "The water is so great; it's a perfect year," Knight said. "And a lot of these guys from Europe never get to see these wild fish. I want them to go back and chatter amongst the pros in Europe and get people further excited." The America Cup Fly Fishing Tournament will take place Friday-Sunday on five different venues, including the Blue, Eagle and Colorado rivers along with Dillon Reservoir and Sylvan Lake State Park near Eagle. Volunteers are still needed to measure fish and record scores. Contact Jodi Knight at 970-390-7425 for info. Saturday marked the launch of Colorado's biggest big game hunting season (http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26592603/sport- hunting-makes-no-promises-except-adventure) of the fall thus far. The so-called second rifle season that runs through Oct. 26 is open to deer hunters who drew limited licenses from the lottery held earlier this year and an unlimited number of elk hunters purchasing over-the-counter tags in any of the state's 92 game management units that offer them. In addition, over-the-counter with caps rifle bear licenses are available to hunters holding deer or elk licenses in the same unit during the same season. The nine-day muzzleloader season for pronghorn begins Tuesday as well. But if you're talking big game hunting in Colorado, you're essentially talking about elk. Some 220,000 elk hunters marched through the state last year, compared with just over 77,000 deer hunters, nearly 19,000 pronghorn hunters and more than 15,000 bear hunters, among others. That's nearly one hunter for each of the estimated 264,000 elk in the state, almost 55,000 of them accounting for nearly 259,000 "hunter days" during the second rifle season alone. Despite a success rate of just 16 percent for the week, it's far and away the most popular time to hunt. Factor in an additional 23,000 deer hunting licenses issued for second rifle season, accounting for more than 90,000 days in the field, and the required blaze- orange attire may just outshine the remaining autumn aspens on the hillsides. "Wear extra orange," big game hunting guide Jim Arnold said as he led a group of hunters into the woods of Summit County last week. "That's what I tell my guys." As for what to expect in terms of animal activity, that's just about anyone's guess this week. Long-range weather forecasts are calling for mild conditions throughout the northern and central mountains, diminishing any sense of urgency for elk migrating to lower elevations. Deer have yet to enter the rut, but they haven't Legendary climber JeffLowe making remarkableturnaround in battle withdisease(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26755517/movie-both-heartwarming-heartbreaking?source=pkg) Erik Weihenmayer showsonce again that barrierscan be broken withambition(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26755516/courageous-kayaker?source=pkg) Willoughby: Blindkayakers take on GrandCanyon(http://www.denverpost.com/willoughby/ci_26728593/willoughby-blind-kayakers-take-grand-canyon?source=pkg) Hunt clubs gain inpopularity with waterfowlhunters(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26728591/hunt-clubs-gain-popularity-waterfowl-hunters?source=pkg) Willoughby: Hunting dogmust wait for birds ofdifferent feather(http://www.denverpost.com/willoughby/ci_26711278/hunting-dog-must-wait-birds-di-8800-erent?source=pkg) Willoughby: Variety ofhunters eagerly awaitSaturday's sunrise(http://www.denverpost.com/willoughby/ci_26683106/variety-hunters-eagerly-await-saturdays-sunrise?source=pkg) North Park in Coloradoideal for best fishing, hunting this week(http://www.denverpost.com/outdoors/ci_26683105/best-time-year-is-here-hunt-fish-north?source=pkg) experienced much hunting pressure yet either. First-season elk hunters encountered varying degrees of success during what's considered the prime rifle hunting season in Colorado, with about a 23 percent success rate among just more than 10,500 hunters in 2013. Early reports indicate a significant bear harvest as well. "That's our premier elk season," said Andy Holland, big game manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. "The rest of them are going to depend on conditions, what kind of snow we get and when. A lot of it really does depend on storm conditions." Interestingly enough, varying weather patterns have worked out to establish fairly consistent statewide elk harvest numbers over the past few years. "It washes out a little," Holland said. "The northern mountains tend to get snow that the southern mountains don't, and vice versa. So it really just depends on where you are hunting." Mule deer hunters tend to see more success in the third and fourth seasons, Holland said, when deer enter the rut and move to winter range. The third rifle season, running Nov. 1-9, is another combined deer-elk opportunity offering over-the-counter bull elk tags to residents and nonresidents, qualifying it as the second-most crowded in the woods. Fishing for the first time along the private banks of the Eagle River in Wolcott, competitors reeled in fish all morning, afternoon and into the evening on the first day of the three-day tournament, which is hosting 180 competitors and 16 teams from around the world in Eagle and Summit counties this weekend. “You could tell it was pros out here fishing today,” said Woody Kiehl, a guide with Vail Valley Anglers who volunteered as a sector judge for the event. Kiehl is quite familiar with the venue, as Vail Valley Anglers is permitted to run guiding trips along the banks of the Eagle River in Wolcott. But this weekend, competitors in the America Cup International Fly Fishing Tournament have the area all to themselves, a nice change of pace for the annual event. “It’s great these guys don’t have to share the area with the regular guys out here fishing,” Kiehl said. Competitor Norm Maktima, of Team USA, agreed. “We’ve had tournaments where we’re dodging kayakers, fighting with locals, trying to cast between whitewater rafters, but today we didn’t have to deal with any of that,” Maktima said after the competition wrapped up Friday. 10/19/2014 Fly-fishing tournament off to a big start | VailDaily.com http://www.vaildaily.com/news/12987364-113/fish-eagle-fishing-river 4/5 “I can’t tell you how excited I am that we’re able to use the Jouflas land this year,” said tournament founder John Knight. “It really sets us up well heading into next year, when we’ll host the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships, and in 2016 when the World Fly Fishing Championships will be held here.” 67-CENTIMETER TROUT Maktima, who, at 34, has been a professional guide and fly-fishing competitor for half of his life, said he caught the largest fish of his competitive career on Friday, a 60.5-centimeter rainbow trout. And it wasn’t even the largest of the day. “A 14-year-old (member of the USA Youth Fly Fishing Team) pulled a 67-centimeter fish out of the river this morning,” said event official Chuck Nash. “It looked like it weighted half as much as he did!” Michael Yelton, of Lake Lure, North Carolina, said conditions were pretty much perfect, except for a 30-minute period of muddy water which passed through Wolcott at around 2 p.m. “It dingied up for a minute, but passed through pretty quickly,” he said. Nash said the peaks of the Sawatch Mountains, visible from the Eagle River to the south, were white at the start of the day, leading Yelton to believe there could have been some fresh runoff muddying the waters. But Kiehl said it was more likely due to some construction underway at nearby Eagle Springs Golf Course, just up river from the America Cup venue at Wolcott. Nash, himself an avid angler, said in watching the competitors on Friday, he has some ideas of where he may try to fish. “I’m going to see if I can get out here in a couple of weeks,” he said, with a gesture toward the Eagle. “It’s great to pick up some pointers watching these guys, but seeing how the pros do it makes me think maybe I’m a better fisherman than I was giving myself credit for.” 3 HOURS, 46 FISH 10/19/2014 Fly-fishing tournament off to a big start | VailDaily.com http://www.vaildaily.com/news/12987364-113/fish-eagle-fishing-river 5/5 Yelton, Maktima and the rest of the competitors who fished the Eagle River on Friday will head to different venues today and Sunday. The tournament also takes place on the Colorado River near Dotsero, Sylvan Lake in Eagle, and Dillon Reservoir and the Blue River in Summit County. Competitors fish each venue for three hours, then move on to the next. Their total number of fish caught, along with the lengths of those fish, will be calculated to determine the winner. “I’ve seen an 8-inch fish determine the outcome of a tournament,” said Jay Buchner, a Team USA staff member and volunteer at the event. At the Eagle River venue Friday, the most fish caught by a competitor was 46. The America Cup will crown an individual champion, as well as a winning team, on Sunday. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Evergreen Lodge in Vail. ©2005 - 2014 Swift Communications, Inc. 10/19/2014 World fly-fishing federation visits Vail | VailDaily.com http://www.vaildaily.com/news/13139397-113/fishing-championships-fly-2016 1/3 John Lacontejlaconte@vaildaily.com September 23, 2014 World fly-fishing federation visits Vail EAGLE COUNTY — By now you’re probably aware that the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are coming to our area. But did you know in 2016 the World Championships will be here, as well? The World Championships of fly-fishing, that is. The International Sport Flyfishing Federation, otherwise known as FIPS-Mouche, is in town this week doing a site visit at the proposed venues for the 2016 Fly Fishing World Championships and the 2015 World Youth Fly Fishing Championships, which will take place here and in Summit County. “What the FIS is for skiing, this group is for fly-fishing,” local angler Mark Sassi, who will be the master of ceremonies for the 2016 World Fly Fishing Championships, said of the FIPS-Mouche representatives in town. ‘IT’S GOING TO BE HISTORIC’ “I’ve fished in lakes since I was 6 years old, I’ve seen some waters around the world, but this is like a fairy tale.” Jason Lieverst Chief of international supervision and technical commission at FIPS-Mouche The purpose of the visit is to make sure the Vail area will have quality fishing waters, accessibility to those areas for the competitors and event workers, and proper facilities and accommodation. On Monday, representatives from FIPS-Mouche visited the site venues at the Colorado River near Dotsero, Sylvan Lake in Eagle and the Eagle River at Wolcott. 10/19/2014 World fly-fishing federation visits Vail | VailDaily.com http://www.vaildaily.com/news/13139397-113/fishing-championships-fly-2016 2/3 Those representatives liked what they saw. “I think it’s going to be historic,” Jason Lieverst, the chief of international supervision and technical commission at FIPS- Mouche, said from Lionshead Village on Monday. “This place is like Disney for us. People always say about the States, ‘They’ve got no history, they just try to make everything like the Europeans do it.’ Essentially that’s what this is, but it’s actually better than the real thing.” Lieverst is visiting from the Netherlands, where he says the fishing can’t compare. “I’ve fished in lakes since I was 6 years old, I’ve seen some waters around the world, but this is like a fairy tale,” he said. “I couldn’t breathe anyway — I live in Holland where we’re 50 meters below sea level, now I’m up at 9,000 feet — but Sylvan Lake took my breath away.” WILD TROUT, PRIVATE WATER FIPS-Mouche President Paul Vekemans said it’s the wild fish that has international anglers so excited about fishing the U.S. “Last year (at the Fly Fishing World Championships), there were sessions where they caught almost 100 fish per person,” said Vekemans. “But it’s all stocked fish. It had nothing to do with skills, it was just speed fishing.” The last time the Fly Fishing World Championships were in the U.S. was in Jackson Hole in 1997. Vekemans was the captain of the Belgian team at the time and took home a silver medal at the competition. “It was special,” he said. “There was an opening ceremony in a rodeo station with a rodeo. They really liked to show what the States had. It was a quality show with quality fishing.” In 2016, Vekemans said he’s expecting more quality fishing. “And we know it will be quality organizing,” he said. “(Tournament director John Knight) came to the Czech Republic during the last World Championships a couple of months ago and said ‘Paul, can I be your shadow for a week?’ I said, ‘You’re welcome.’ He did the scoring with me, went to all meetings, all the talks with the locals, so probably he learned a lot there. I’m comfortable it will be spot on here in 2016.” 10/19/2014 World fly-fishing federation visits Vail | VailDaily.com http://www.vaildaily.com/news/13139397-113/fishing-championships-fly-2016 3/3 PRIVATE LAND Knight is also the founder and director of the annual America Cup fly-fishing tournament, held annually in Eagle County. He says his goal all along with the America Cup was to bring the World Championships back to the U.S. This year, the America Cup secured a plot of private land to provide a venue along the Eagle River in Wolcott, something competitors said they especially appreciated as they didn’t have to compete with everyday anglers out enjoying the water. “Wild trout, private water, these are things that are unheard of for these international competitors,” Knight said. The 2016 World Fly Fishing Championships will take place Sept. 11-18, 2016, and the 2015 Youth World Fly Fishing Championships will be here Aug. 10-16, 2015. ©2005 - 2014 Swift Communications, Inc.
