Taste of Vail Recognized with Celebrate Green! Award
Taste of Vail organizers are being recognized this year with the Celebrate Green! award presented by the Town of
Vail in recognition of the event’s ongoing efforts to promote zero waste. Since the inception of the Celebrate
Green! program in 2010, the town’s Event Review Committee has developed increasing standards for event
producers to go green. In particular, Taste of Vail is being honored for the tremendous strides that have made in
elevating the standards for composting and recycling at the annual Lamb Cook Off.
One of the largest waste generating events held annually in Vail, event producers and volunteers during the 2015
Lamb Cook Off reduced the amount of waste going to the landfill by 87 percent. Walking Mountains Science
Center was hired to educate both the public and the participating vendors on how to separate compostable and
recyclable waste from general refuse into clean streams through the Zero Hero program. All of the participating
restaurants are required to use only compostable serving ware, reusable linens and to recycle all glass bottles.
2015 Taste of Vail By the Numbers
◾Debut of Rosé: Total waste 894.5 pounds (794 diverted) resulting in an 89 percent diversion rate
◾Lamb Cook Off: Total waste: 2,668.5 pounds (2,346.5 diverted) resulting in an 88 percent diversion rate
◾Mountain Top Picnic: Total Waste 2,283 pounds (1,960 diverted) resulting in an 86 percent diversion rate
◾Combined, event generated 5,846 pounds of waste; 5,100.5 was diverted from the landfill (compost, recycling,
cork programs) for an 87 percent event total diversion rate, or only 745.5 pounds of trash going to the landfill
The Town of Vail’s Celebrate Green! Program requires all special event producers to complete a points-based
checklist as part of their special event permit to ensure compliance with a minimum number of sustainable
practices. Additional points are awarded to those who go above and beyond to reduce waste, encourage public
transportation and reduce their carbon footprint.
The award includes a reduction up to $250 in Town of Vail permitting fees as well as public recognition
announcing the achievement. This recognition is given to events that exceed the minimum Celebrate Green!
requirements by the greatest margin and that creatively showcase the event as a model of environmental
awareness and sustainability.
Previous awards have been presented to the Teva Mountain Games and Gourmet on Gore as two examples that
raised the bar for events that Celebrate Green!
