Event and/or Organization Website: bettyfordalpinegardens.org Submit PDF via email to: mmiano@vailgov.com CSE 2019 RFP – EE Fund Balance: 2/22/2019 Application Form Page 2 of 6 Soil &Farmers, photographic panels by world-renowned National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson will be installed inside the Education Center and out in the Gardens located in Ford Park to make human connections with individual farmers of the world and how soil affects worldwide food production. Simultaneously, the US Botanic Garden’s most popular 2015 exhibit, Exposed: The Secret Life of Roots will travel for the first time to the Education Center and Women Farmers, a photographic exhibit prepared by Jim Richardson illustrating the magnitude of women farmers’ impact on world food production, will be displayed in the Vail Library and the other three local libraries in our community. Funding for The Women Farmers exhibits has already been found through a donor to Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is one of the outstanding ways the Town of Vail meets its mission to provide educational opportunities to citizens and guests. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is repeatedly rated in Trip Advisor’s Top 3 Things to do in Vail and has been given their Certificate of Excellence for consistently earning great reviews from travelers. An alluring reason to plan a vacation to Vail is being able to plan time for public, self-guided and private tours of the Gardens. The Soil & Farmers, Roots and Women Farmers exhibits as well as permanent exhibits and activities in the Education Center, Botanic and Children’s Gardens are a new and fun part of these visits. Changing programs add an enticing benefit for return visits to Vail as well. The goal of BFAG’s Roots, Soil & Farmers and Women Farmers exhibits and activities is to raise community and visitor awareness of historical and current agricultural practices and their effects on food and ecosystem security. The relationships among wild diversity, crop plants and agriculture, both positive and negative, will be presented in programming and displays. Learning is lifelong and self-motivated. BFAG is an informal learning institution that provides individuals of different ages and personal identities with the tools needed to become environmental stewards. Project elements are aimed toward visitors of all ages. levels. Additional funds will be used to generate 18 Indoor and 12 outdoor exhibit panels designed by Nat Geo photographer Jim Richardson plus licensing fees to illustrate the importance of farmers of the world and how soil affects plant growth and food production. BFAG received a 2019 CSE E&E Grant for $20,000 of a $30,000 request. Total expenses for the Exposed: The Secret Life of Roots exhibit and activities is estimated to be $60,000. The previous $20,000 CSE Grant will be used to purchase the floor to ceiling roots being grown for us by the Land Institute of Kansas, the highlight of the Roots exhibit. An additional $5000 donor grant will be used for the Women Farmers library exhibit. 1. Event Description: a. Detailed description of the event and its activities. CSE 2019 RFP – EE Fund Balance: 2/22/2019 Application Form Page 3 of 6 Betty Ford Alpine Gardens provides unique outdoor and indoor settings with engaged staff, free Roots theme based interpretive exhibits, materials, maps, treasure hunts and tabletop activities to engage all ages of learners. More in-depth educational opportunities include guided and self-guided tours, workshops, and expert speaker series. Providing groups and families with interpretive materials reinforces learning through conversation. The quality of interactions with the Gardens’ staff can also make a profound difference in visitor learning. The ability to inspire engagement and commitment is considered the most important leadership skill. All motivation comes from within a person through what is consistent with their values and vision. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens’ Roots, Soil & Farmers and Women Farmers exhibits and activities encourage all visitors - local, national, and international - to incorporate the urgent need to figure out a way to sustainably feed our planet into their personal values. An educated and motivated visitor can then provide meaningful personal and financial support to conservation projects and compel conservation action by their legislators wherever their home may be. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is one of the world’s premier specialized botanical gardens with a mission to deepen understanding of alpine plants and fragile mountain environments. Established in 1986 in the Town of Vail’s Ford Park, it is the highest elevation botanical garden in the world at 8,200 ft. (2,700 m). The gardens are available free of charge and attract more than 100,000 visitors annually to view a unique collection of alpine and mountain plants from around the world with related educational exhibits and activities. The annual budget for Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is $1.3 million for the October 2018 – September 2019 fiscal year. Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is repeatedly rated in Trip Advisor’s Top 3 Things to do in Vail and has been given their Certificate of Excellence for consistently earning great reviews from travelers. The annual Town of Vail Event Visitor Surveys also receive excellent reviews for Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, with a 2018 Net Promoter Score of 90. The Gardens are well thought of in the local community as well, receiving the Vail Valley Partnership’s 2018 Nonprofit of the Year award. An alluring reason to visit and vacation in Vail is being able to plan time for public, self-guided and private tours and events in the Gardens. Changing annual themes and associated activities encourage visitors to return again and again. 5.
