1. Approval of minutes from July 7 meeting.
2. Citizen input - No citizen input.
3. Gregg Barrie, TOV Landscape Architect – Updates for the new deer screen for West Vail
Gregg reviews the board’s interest for including art as a part of the new deer screen. He has a quote for
including art on the screen which is about $6,200 for the art component. It would include a full 4 color process.
With the advances in printing technology it is easier to print on the vinyl. He has spoken with CDOT and the
Division of Wildlife. He would suggest criteria if there is a call to artists. Bill Andre with the Div. of Wildlife
commented that his concerns are with the animals in making it easier for them to cross beneath I70. What we
presently have now works. This should be kept in mind with its bold patterns and simple colors. CDOT
commented no words, logos, non-distracting and subdued colors so that the fence is there, but does not
require a second glance. Gregg asks for comments. Margaret asks if CDOT has to approve the final design.
He does not believe so. It was sent to the entire region and those were the only comments. Molly asks if
photography it too detailed. Gregg believes it is up to the board to determine what is non-distracting as it is on
a curve within Dowd Junction. Molly found that we did pay a stipend to the artist for the original deer screen.
Molly presents to the board a graphic image of aspens throughout the four seasons that she found in the AIPP
files. An artist is not identified on this image, so she asks the board if they have any recollection as to what the
project might be or who the artist is. The board reacts positively to the image. The board does not recall what it
might be. Gregg asks Kathy if she recalls the process of selecting an artist for the deer screen. She recalls that
the board was working with Barbara Baer on project and the screen evolved from her participation in another
art project. Molly comments that this could be an opportunity to work with a graphic artist. The board would like
Molly to research who the aspen graphic artist might be. Molly mentions that it might be a proposal for a
trashcan or transformer. The board believes it would certainly meet the criteria, so it is worth pursuing as the
image for the new deer screen. Gregg suggests emailing Leslie Fordham.
4. Summer AIPP programing updates
Community Collective Exhibition at VPL – August 1 through September 1. Molly has hung the 15 works
in the community room of the library. There is a ballot box for the people’s choice award within the
community room. The People’s Choice Award will be on view at the VPL from October 13 – January 13
Lionshead art tour day is this Thursday August 7 – start at Library end at Rembrandt. There will be an
opening reception with coffee and pastries for the artists and guests on this morning at 10:00 a.m. The
walk will then launch out into Lionshead from the library. Molly asks about the Lionshead Merchant
Association purchases from Kathy. She believes that it was partly because Lionshead was trying to
have more draw. She believes it is only a couple of works that were acquired with funds from this
association. The Need to Know was a part of the library being constructed. She believes that there
might be a book/binder with the history of some of these early works.
Rembrandt exhibition at Grand View. Participants from the Wednesday Art Walks receive a 50%
discount to the exhibition. The opening went very well. It was well attended and received. The Mowers
were very engaging with the guests. Margaret mentions that the clubs will be going to see the
exhibition.
Colorado Loops by Yoshitomo Saito at International Bridge June 18 – September 30. He has been
traveling for much of the summer, so it wasn’t possible to get him on a weekend this summer.
5. Coordinator updates
Riddles on Wall Street relocation – Molly went with Public Works to look at the riddles which will be
displaced due to the construction on Wall Street. We will keep them in Public Works for storage. We did
look at new locations for the riddles along Wall Street.
Meeting with Susie Tjossem about audio tour. She will hopefully have a demonstration come October.
6. Triumph Winterfest logistics for 2014/15
Molly has reached out to both Steve Virostek and Kent Logan, but has not yet connected. The feeling with the
town is to start it in December, so that will be up for the month of January and not get lost within all of the 2015
activities in the village. Molly asks for feedback from the board and if Jen has any 2015 updates. There are
none.
7. Board discussion of future goals of AIPP
Molly met recently with Greg Hall, Director of Public Works to discuss AIPP. It was suggested that the board
have a retreat in order to address the direction and future goals of AIPP. The direction of the art collection
should be addressed. We need to get a focus from the board. Kathy explains to the board that the AIPP budget
line item for artwork rolls over year to year. The unused monies from the allocated annual $75,000 budget go
into this account, so that a major work of art may be acquired for the town’s growing collection. With a focus
and direction this money will be less vulnerable from year to year when the budgets are reviewed. Molly
remarks that the budget is mapped out per year and those remaining funds are rolled forward. Molly comments
that Triumph, the Logans, and Doe Browning are three significant donors to AIPP. It was suggested to her to
begin the process of reaching out further into the community by starting a Friends of AIPP sort of program.
Molly also sees this as an opportunity to create a network of interest, support, volunteers as well as financial
support for future programs. While it does also create a lot of work, we should look at board sub-committees to
assist me in some of these initiatives in engaging the community in a broader way. Kathy believes that it would
behoove the board to have a retreat and have Greg Hall come to the board so that they can better understand
the budget. Kathy thinks we need to be thoughtful of AIPPs vision. Margaret comments that we should look at
the Friends of the Library model. Julie suggests talking to the library and talking to our finance department.
Margaret believes it would be worthwhile to discuss the Logan sculpture garden. Kathy asks if there are other
options besides Ford Park. Molly comments that he is very interested in Ford Park, but has concerns that Ford
Park has no winter visibility. Julie asks about the island space in front of the post office as a possible location
for public art. Molly will ask about the ownership of that area of land. Molly mentions to the Board about the
designated Creative Districts in the state of Colorado. Molly participated in several meetings in Avon with the
Vail Valley Partnership because there was interest in applying for the district valley wide. It was decided that
there was not enough time to complete the application process, however Avon applied separately for the
Creative District though was not selected. Molly believes that there may be a need to try to create a synergy
between all of the cultural entities in Vail. It seems like this summer has been high on the culture with great
interest in Vail’s offerings. It is asked if there is a gallery association anymore in Vail. Molly comments that
there is none and she would like to see one. She is often asked about gallery walks and first Friday events in
Vail which do not exist. Molly shows the board a very simple art walk brochure for the galleries in Telluride.
Kathy comments that is the first brochure she always looks for when going to towns. Dana comments that
there is the art magazine that is published by the Vail Daily. Kathy comments that what is really needed is just
a small brochure for the galleries. Amanda comments that when she worked for a gallery in Beaver Creek she
worked with Bravo to have music in the breezeway and they did have a coordinated art walk. She said that it
was successful. She suggests partnering with Bravo. Molly mentions that she was brainstorming on how they
could collaborate and suggest a month long event like August Acoustic Art in the galleries. They could even
invite the local young talent in the valley. It is also suggested to reach out to jazz. Amanda comments that it is
really just exposure which benefits all of the galleries. Kathy thinks it would be good to follow-up with Four
Seasons if they ever created their bear hunt. Molly remarks on an event in another town where they had a
scavenger hunt for objects within the galleries. Once the person located every object on the art scavenger hunt
their punch card was put in a raffle for a gift certificate to use at one of the participating galleries. Molly can
bring this up with Wren from the Vail Daily. Kathy remarks that Bill Rey is very active. Marc from Vail
International Gallery is also very active. Dana comments that she will ask John as well. The board thinks that a
retreat would be worthwhile. Julie offers to work on a sub-committee for Friends of Vail Public Art. Amanda
also offers to assist. Molly also comments that we should look at sites that are available for public art within the
town of Vail. Molly will bring the map that she has for town of Vail property. Julie comments that the walk along
the creek might be a nice location. Jen comments that there have been issues with some vandalism in the
Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. The Board asks Molly to have Greg Hall come to our next meeting. The board
confirms that a retreat after the September 8th meeting would work well. Molly will secure a location. Kara asks
if the destination art fund is ear marked for a specific work of art or artist. Kara asks if it might be worth going to
donors for the art itself. Is it possible that with a donation of a work of art that the monies be donated to a
charity of their choice. Molly comments that she and Amanda have discussed opportunities for a friend’s group
to have private tours of exhibitions, collections, homes, etc. The board comments positively on this aspect.
Molly tells the board when the Red Cliff Tour will take place this August. The board thinks seeing more open
studios would be nice. Molly comments that reaching out to Randy Milhoan would be beneficial getting more
valley wide participation. Kathy asks if there is a list of how the art collection was obtained. Molly does have an
inventory list which does indicate which have been donated and which have been part of town projects. Molly
will bring this list to the retreat. Friends would be open to anyone. Molly does pass out tickets to the board for
Rembrandt. Amanda and Julie comment that they would be willing to meet prior to brainstorm on Friends.
Kathy thinks it is worthwhile for Molly to bring images of potential works for the board to get inspired.
Meeting adjourned.
