3. Proposed Skatepark RFQ update
Molly introduces Scott from Tiger Pop gallery in Lionshead who is present to learn about the public art call for
artists for the proposed skatepark. Molly updates the board on the past two workshops with California
Skateparks on May 13 and May 27. She informs the board the attendance was great and represented all ages
and ability of local skaters. There is much enthusiasm from the local skaters about the proposed skatepark.
She remarks that CA Skateparks have been very thorough and truly engaging the skaters to learn of the wants
and requests for a top skatepark in Vail. They want this to truly be Vail’s skatepark. Molly and Kara met with
the design group on May 13. Molly remarks that she went with Todd Oppenheimer to the DRB meeting on May
20. At present, the timeline for the deadline for the RFQ is June 12, Council presentation June 16, AIPP RFQ
review with CA Skateparks June 17 at 8:00 a.m. at Public Works, along with another DRB meeting on that day.
Proposed notification is July 1 for the artists. The RFQ has been released nationally, so she is anticipating
good responses. Margaret comments that she is working with the Town Clerk to clarify and confirm the Council
minutes for record, so it is reflecting the approved location along with the design. Molly shows images and
video from the workshops which display the enthusiasm of the skaters about creating a unique world-class
skatepark in this location. Bill, Kathy, and Julie have attended a workshop. Molly reviews the parameters of the
RFQ and deadlines. Bill comments that this is a great project for the kids to enjoy. He remarks that to be able
to skate in the winter would be a spectacular experience for the kids because there is not much for them to do
when they get off of the mountain. Molly comments on a remark from a parent at the workshop who expressed
that there isn’t anything for the kids to do after the Burton events. Bill comments that he was impressed with
how many young kids were present at the workshop.
4. Vail ART Pass
The first event will be a tour of Vicki and Kent Logan’s private collection on June 22 from 4:00 - 5:30. Molly will
have publicity promoting the new Vail ART Pass program released shortly. The board asks Molly to get
permission to advertise the “Logan” collection as the first event. Molly will get the parking approved from PD.
They would like to limit it to 25 people for the tour. Molly has confirmed July 23 for the tour of Carbondale with
the Powers Art Center and James Surls’ studio. Molly asks the board if she should look into having a reception
following for this inaugural event. Kathy thinks it would be a nice idea as this is the first event and to gauge
from there in the future. The board discusses various potential spaces for the reception following. Molly
confirms with the board that the annual membership is $50. It is approved that the $50 will cover the costs for
this inaugural event and membership. Molly remarks that going off-site and inside would be logistically simpler.
Kathy comments that board members should pay the fee if they plan to attend and participate in the events. It
will separate the board as paying members of the club as well. Michael motions for non-members, if space is
available at this event. the charge will be $25. Molly comments that members will enjoy the preferred access
and only open to non-members if space is available. Bill remarks that it should be cash bar, as we are here to
cover costs. The cost is in the experience of viewing the collection. The board agrees. Molly explains that there
will be a membership form online this week.
5. Vail Village Welcome Center, RFP for review
Molly updates the board on the proposals submitted thus far for the Welcome Center. Hopefully we will be able
to review the proposals at the July 6 meeting.
6. Summer Programming
GoPro – Zio Zeigler. Molly has been working with GoPro and the VVF to bring San Francisco based
muralist Zio Zeigler to Vail for a live demonstration during GoPro. Upon approval, the work will be
donated to Red Sandstone Elementary as the artist wants it to be placed in a public space. Molly has
reviewed parameters and criteria for AIPP’s public art with the artist and GoPro. The mural will be on
affixed plywood on the Wall Street construction fence facing the Children’s Fountain. It is 13 8 x 4 feet
plywood panels, so it will measure approximately 52 feet. The VVF is getting the supplies and installing
the wall.
Michael Grab – Gravity Glue. Molly has not heard back from him regarding her numerous inquiries to
have a live rock balancing performance in Vail. Molly did hear back from the division of wildlife that it
can take place with a few requirements from Aug 15 – Sept 15.
Library Group Exhibition – September 16 – October 15.
The launch of a new website and online map is proposed for this summer. Molly shows the board a
template for the new map as designed by TOV’s Sean Koenig. The board is enthusiastic about this new
interactive map for the collection. It will have larger links for more information, incorporate audio, and
larger images.
Ladies Fancyworks Society – Molly and Amanda tell the board about this group who might be able to
have a temporary installation this summer in Vail. The collective group out of Denver “yarn bombs”
either natural or built structures. Kathy asks if they could come for an installation this summer. Molly will
reach out to them to see their availability. The board thinks it could be a fun and engaging installation.
Michael tells the board about a sculptor named Diaz whom he saw during a recent trip to Mexico. While
he liked the work, the problem with would be with the associated costs for importation, etc. The work
however reminded him of a Denver artist named Kevin Robb. He also is a contemporary sculptor who
is pretty well known. The work is similar to that of Diaz. He remarks that we might want to look at
having some of his works on view in Vail. He varies in scale and in series of works. Michael remarks
that it is very interactive given the scale. Amanda comments that the space and location is important so
that it does engage the viewer.
Artful Sol – Bill asks what happened to the gallery who wanted to install on the International Bridge.
Molly remarks that the public works department feels uncomfortable with the installation given the lack
of understanding for a safe installation. Molly has asked for her shop and engineering drawings for the
install, but has not been able to provide the appropriate information. The department feels
uncomfortable with the installation without clear communication regarding the engineering behind the
work for public safety.
Art Walks June 17 – August 26
7. Coordinator Updates
Denver Imagine 2020 meeting – Molly remarks on the meeting which Amanda was able to attend. She
comments several artists gave recognition to Vail. Amanda comments on the Patrick Marold installation
that will be at DIA.
Branching Pattern by Robert Tully has a new base.
Wall Street Riddles –– Amy Dose has been hired to paint the riddles that were removed due to the
construction on Wall Street. Several were damaged so will need to be repaired/replaced.
Deb Bakal repaired the vandalized 10th Mountain Soldier. The bronze sculpture was vandalized with
glue as well as paint. Molly will look into cameras in the area. We may want to revisit having the work
overhauled. It was estimated about $10,000 a couple of years ago. We would need to look at when it is
most convenient to have it restored. Margaret comments that we need to talk to finance in case it needs
to be addressed for 2016 in the budget with a line item. Molly comments that we are unsure of when
the vandalism actually occurred as there was construction fence around the area after the mountain
closed. Kathy comments on the history of the project and that the quality of bronze was cast poorly. It
was actually a gift, so she would argue that any costs would come directly from the AIPP budget. Molly
will discuss it with Deb Bakal for recommendations.
Missing chimes repaired by Robert Tully at Cloudscape.
8. Art-spiration
Molly shows slides of a recent trip to Virginia with images of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts who also have a
Bryan Hunt in the collection. She then shows images of the sculpture gardens. She then shows images from
Denver’s public art collection.
Meeting adjourned.
