3. Booth Creek Playground Artist Selection, Todd Oppenheimer & Gregg Barrie – Town of Vail
Molly explains to the board that we had 60 artists submit for consideration at the Booth Creek Playground. The
selection group further looked at 7 artists who fulfilled the requirements and qualifications for the project. The
project was considered in connection to the neighborhood feedback for their vision of the park. The scale is
quite intimate for a playground project. Todd explains that in deciding an artist factors considered were not just
the art and past projects, but how we felt the artist would be able to integrate into the larger picture. The artist
would be required to work with the town staff and design team. The artist would have to have the flexibility to
travel to Vail for multiple meetings with the design teams and for public meetings. The artist has to engage this
entire group. The artists’ letters came into great consideration, so that they demonstrated being a team player.
Todd explains that Chevo Studios in Denver displayed this past experience in working in play environments
and with the public process. The town believes it will be a two phase process. The first being the design
process with community meetings involving kids. Todd shows the images and RFQ submitted by Chevo
Studios to the board. Julie comments that we want to ensure that his proposal is unique. The Board approves
to move forward with the selection of Chevo Studios to proceed with the design of the Booth Creek
Playground.
4. Skatepark
The board would like to look at the concrete stain samples proposed for the park. Molly shows the proposals
by California Skateparks which show the scope of the concrete samples. We need to make the selection today.
Other areas where color is being suggested: metal railings, c-channels, coping. We will need to look at
possible colors to incorporate into the skatepark. She explains that we want to be mindful not to make it too
frilly with too much color. We want to keep the park users in mind when we are selecting colors. Molly has
been working with Zach Wormhoudt from CA Skateparks in looking at color options. Molly remarks that the
stain is permanent whereas the metal elements we can always repaint. Bill suggests using black on the metal
areas. Molly shows images of skateparks with color integrated in designs. We will want to look at Valerie’s
color palette, as well with her mosaic. We have looked more closely at the Fern Green versus the Copper
Patina. Molly remarks that the blue may be derived from the pool relationship with skateparks. After the
meeting, the board will go to look at the stain samples on site.
4. Winterfest and Paper Lanterns
Molly explains the change in sponsorship for the Winterfest. Triumph is donating $10,000 for the project. Logan
is not participating in the project this year. We can look at more sponsorship in the coming years, but now we
need to proceed due to ad and print deadlines. Molly explains some of the creative designs being proposed for
the Ice Theater. We are looking at recreating a 10 foot screen accompanied with oversized ice chairs. She has
asked Paul to create drapes on the edges making it look like a theater screen. The entire presentation will be
about the theater experience. The oversized chairs will be Alice in Wonderland inspired which will also be a
daytime attraction. Molly suggests including 5 of these large chairs installed around the theater. The chairs are
$2,000 a piece. We may or may not want to include benches. They are running $1,700. The board likes the
chairs. We brought real benches to the last theater. The chairs can be infused with really rich saturated colors
at night. Molly is working with Vail Resorts, Chris Anthony, holiday cartoons now for content. Molly is working
with Swank Motion Pictures to get the licensing permits. We hope to have it installed by December 23. Julie
comments that we should look into getting a popcorn cart for a couple of nights. Molly comments that Doe
Browning has donated $3,500 for the paper lantern project. The tree lighting is Dec. 20 at 5:00 pm. The first
workshop with the Alpine Arts Center is Dec. 18 from 4:00 – 6:00pm. This is the painting lantern workshop
Libations and Lanterns. The workshop with Helen Hiebert is from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. We are going to try to get
volunteers to help. The new event producer is Angela Mueller. She has asked Lou from Masked Man to lead
the lantern walk. Molly asks Kara to assist again in getting the schools to participate. Kara suggests reaching
out to the schools after Thanksgiving. Angela is working on prizes for creativity. Julie asks about the lantern
walk and suggests having more lanterns to give to the public at the tree lighting. She suggests having music
included during the walk.
5. Welcome Center Art by Paul Vexler
We are set to install on December 7 with a reception on December 8. The board decides the reception be from
4:00 – 6:00 at the Welcome Center. Molly will get pricing from caterers. We will have hot cocoa/cider versus
alcohol.
6. Summer Programming
Molly discusses possible housing for visiting artists. During the month of May we have an opportunity to house
artists in TOV accommodations at Buzzard Park. It will be an opportunity to have the artists work on temporary
installations. It can be modeled after artist in residency programs. It would be ideal to have installations
complete before GoPro. Julie suggests working with the press to have people know of her progress. Molly is
looking into a visa for visiting artists.
7. Coordinator updates
Chevo Studios will be at the December meeting with finalized concepts for the Ford Park portals. Andy
Dufford and Rachel Brenna came to another site visit to Vail and met with Molly and Todd to walk
around Ford Park and discuss the project.
We have close to 100 artists who have submitted for the I-70 underpass. Molly asks the board when
they would like to start looking at the applications. The board will meet in late Nov.
Joan Willoughby was selected as the People’s Choice Award. Her work Gore Creek will be on view
over the fireplace until January 11. Molly asks the board if they would like to revisit the process for this
public art initiative due to the time it requires. Kathy suggests inviting artists who have submitted in the
past. Molly will discuss the program with the library.
The Time Trial Wheel cannot be located to the site west of the parking structure due to mains running
under the proposed location. The grade is about two feet, so it won’t work in this location now. We need
to come up with an alternate location. The International Bridge location possibly could have a no
parking sign in front of the sculpture location.
Vail ART Pass. The board will invite members to the opening of Paul Vexler’s work as a December
event. The board discusses a Denver trip in January and possibly riding the bustang.
8. Site visit to Skatepark to discuss color selection.
The board prefers the Fern Green color for the concrete stain.
9. Meeting adjourned.
