HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 7, 2017 Minutes Minutes: Art in Public Places Board Meeting Monday, August 7, 2017, 8:30 a.m. Town Council Chambers AIPP Board members present: Susan Bristol, Nancy Lassetter, Bill Pierce, Margaret Rogers, Kara Woods AIPP Board members absent: Patricia Donovan, Julie Hansen Others present: Molly Eppard, AIPP Coordinator *Meeting presided by Kara Woods as Co-Chair. 1. Approval of minutes from July 3 meeting. 2. No citizen input. 3. Patrick Dougherty – Stickworks update Molly informs the board about her visit to the Flaum ranch near Leadville with Todd Oppenheimer. They evaluated possible areas for harvesting willows and identified an area with the Flaum’s which should work well for an early June gathering. The area is at a higher elevation, so it should not be wet, or muddy in June. Molly reviews the itinerary for Patrick’s visit later this month. It is a very short visit, so we will need to fully focus on the project. He is staying at Manor Vail. Molly will meet him Monday afternoon after his 3 pm arrival and take him to Ford Park to look at the site approved in the park by the AIPP board. Molly met with Nicola from the BFAG and she too is pleased with the location. Molly hopes that the artist will also react positively to the site. Margaret asks about the location in the green. Molly comments that we are on the far southern edge of the green which is very visible and accessible for the project. We were mindful, not to interfere with the open playing area for this temporary installation. Tuesday, August 22 we will visit the Flaum ranch with the artist to look at the materials for the installation. Wednesday, August 23 we will discuss logistical issues for the project with the artist. The board decides to host a small dinner on Monday to welcome Patrick and his wife. Molly will work on the logistics for a dinner. The board agrees that we should consider beginning the installation after GoPro (June 7 – 10, 2018) given the awards and concerts in Ford Park during the mountain games. Molly will discuss this with the artist to see if it may be possible with his schedule. Molly comments that Andy Kagan has also been very insightful in looking at the willows given his work and familiarity with the ranch and elements. Site plan attached. 4. Rod Kagan sculpture donation update Molly reviews her meeting with Andy Kagan and Todd Oppenheimer. The artist’s representative was very pleased with the in-town bus turn around location by the rugby fields. He thought the surrounding natural space will suit the sculptures well. Molly comments that Public Works also approved the site and it should not interfere with the bus turn around and snow removal. Molly shows site plans created by Todd O. for the site. She explains that the prep will involve removing the weeds, debris and existing stones from the site. The site will have some increased soil elevation and ultimately be landscaped with a natural aesthetic and wildflowers. Summer programming update  Davey Gravey’s Tiny Cinema – Attendance Vail Village 121 people & Lionshead 83 people. He felt the evenings are better than day, as people were more focused on mountain recreation.  Alpine Art Classes at the Amphitheater - 39 attendees for the August 3 class.  Art Walks – 45 attendees on July 26 & 40 attendees on August 2.  Vail ART Pass o Marble CO – Thursday, July 20th 1pm – Marble symposium tour and met founder, director, and sculptor Madeline Weiner. 9 people total attended. She will still plan to attend the festival should anyone be interested. She comments weekends are difficult to get groups together. Margaret thinks we should focus on September and October because people are enjoying that last push of outdoor summer recreation. o Calder Monumental – Denver Botanic Gardens – through Sept. 24 – Molly will look at possible Sept. dates perhaps coupled with a tour of the Contemporary Art Museum. o Art walk followed by a gathering at La Tour.
