HomeMy WebLinkAboutJuly 3, 2017 Minutes Minutes: Art in Public Places Board Meeting Monday, July 3, 2017, 8:30 a.m. Town Council Chambers AIPP Board members present: Patricia Donovan, Julie Hansen, Nancy Lassetter, Bill Pierce, Margaret Rogers, Kara Woods AIPP Board members absent: Susan Bristol Others present: Molly Eppard, AIPP Coordinator 1. Approval of minutes from June 5 meeting. 2. No citizen input. 3. Ben Roth Environmental Installation Molly reviews the project. It went well. We made some alterations to the design as the trees were available for the project and looking at the optimal use of the space. The PW crews were extraordinarily helpful as always. She will have a pizza lunch for the crews who assisted in the project. They were accommodating in the last minute changes. The overall costs including reception and lodging is approximately $7,500. Molly is working on a press release now that the project is completed. We may be able to relocate the Symmetree in the winter for preservation of the structures. Kara comments that Ben “thanked” AIPP/Vail for thinking outside of the box and it is always a pleasure to work with Vail. Molly remarks that working with Ben is an interesting process and it is best to let him be the creative rather than offering any artistic direction. He is a great artist to collaborate on projects. Julie comments it is a wonderful picnic area. The board decides to keep it accessible for the 4th of July parade. 4. Golf Course Clubhouse report Greg H. is getting another estimate for the credenza TV lift. We want to look at other options and perhaps working with the woodworker from the clubhouse project. Greg H. is also working on the budget remaining with Zehren. He is communicating directly with the project manager and designer to determine their remaining funds for the project, so we can proceed with the interior finishes. She comments that the Arteriors light fixture was not ordered by the designer. The board is not pleased that this has yet to be ordered for review, as it was promised several weeks ago by the designer. Bill offers to assist with any orders to expedite the project. Molly did pick up the aspen painting by Mai Wyn which we will install next week with the TOV carpenters. 5. Patrick Dougherty Stickworks update The artist will arrive August 21 @ 3pm. Molly will pick up Patrick and take to Ford Park for the site visit. Molly will invite Ford Park stakeholders interested in the project to a meeting with Patrick – Nicola BFAG – Jen Mason VVF – Kim Laingmaid Walking Mts Nature Ctr. On Tuesday, August 22 we will look at the potential harvest sites. The Flaum’s have offered their ranch near Leadville as a potential willow site. Molly & Todd will visit in advance to look at the property and accessibility to the willows. Kara is also looking at another option if this does not work. Molly comments that an evening reception this visit may be too much to pack into a short visit with the artist. She thinks we should save a reception for when he comes in 2018 for a larger celebration of the project. She comments we need to focus on the logistics for the project while he is in town this August. Molly suggests a possible breakfast may make better sense with the artist perhaps on August 22 before we go to see the willows. Julie comments that we should be respectful of his time in Vail and see what he would like to do. The project development is the priority. Town of Vail Page 2 6. Coordinator Updates  I70 update – July 17 installation of art headlight glare screen.  Ford Park Portals– stones installed with metal elements later in the month  Molly shows photo of The Lion’s sculpture which is now installed on the east side of the development.  La Cantina potential expansion – Molly shows an image of sculpture Branching Pattern which may need to be relocated. She has a couple of ideas which may work, but will continue to communicate with the planners about the project and who might absorb the costs for a relocation.  The bear sculpture in Cloudscape has been chipped by what seems to be someone throwing stones at the work. PW crews reported it to the police for a report. Molly will reach out to the artist for recommendations. We will have signs placed on this playground that it is under observation because this is the second incident in the past two years with damage to the sculptures.  Kagan sculpture location discussion – Molly shows the board an image of the sculptures the board approved for donation to the TOV’s public art location. The East Vail interchange is a bit delayed for the time being. Molly hopes we can decide on a location for an install in August. She thinks anything central will be difficult because they are most successful with some space and distance to the works. Kara questions placing in a park because they do look climbable and they will be more successful if placed in a natural setting not near a playground. Molly agrees with Kara’s comments. Julie asks about the possibility of Post Office beautification and the TOV could take over it. Molly will inquire with PW. She asks if we can look at this as a possibility. Kara asks if we should look at the north side of the I70 underpass roundabout. Molly mentions the bus turnaround island near the Nature Center and Golf Course. The island in the middle is highly visible and can use some enhancements. Trish asks about next steps. Molly will discuss the possible locations with PW. The board asks if it may work at the Golf Course itself. Andy Kagan would like to visit Vail to see any potential site. Molly reviews the sizes of the works’ height: 9’ 10’ and 8’. Molly thanks the board for their suggestions and will meet with PW to discuss the feasibility of these sites.  Town of Vail now has a Facebook page.  Trish shares information about her art exhibition at the Vail Public Library. Meeting adjourned.
